Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Oh, see I prefer abstract-y artish covers... This one springs to mind: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

I nominated Hitchhikers because it has been a personal favourite of mine for a long time, and I also noticed quite a few *'s(would like to read) next to it on peoples lists in the topic regarding the BBC list. If you saw some humour in the movie, you'll like the book. Though I think that movie versions tend to lose something of the story, especially if the movie is geared towards a much younger audience. And as a fan of the book itself, I found this with Hitchhikers. Sometimes actions and special effects can't do what words can.

A while back one of the used bookstores in my city reorganized all the books by color. It was impossible to find anything specific but it looked amazing.

That's HILARIOUS. It's one thing to organize your clothes in your closet by color (why are you pointing at me???), or the clothes in stores... but books? Maybe on your personal bookshelves at home, but at a used bookstore?? Holy hilariousness, Batman! I wonder how long it took them to reorganize... Were they closed for a week before the change??

message 206: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Oh, I forgot. I got 3 e-mails telling me about the upcoming books. Are we reading Fool AND Hitchhiker's? Either way--the e-mails were really useful! Thanks!

message 207: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Yes, Lori has decided that we will also be reading Fool (it's a runner up), since the results were so close.

message 208: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 246 comments I voted for Fool because I had already read Hitchhiker's Guide, so I am glad that you added it.

message 209: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Okay--I missed that! Thanks for the clarification!

I can agree with that in that they all deserve to be enjoyed equally."

I only now start to realize that some kind of books i seem to like more are not only fiction but for isntance historical fiction...genes make it too confusing. Just like YA. I am never sure that i am reading something like YA, jsut that it is fiction.

Kandice I'm coming too, and I am bringing a blankie. Make room...

message 215: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (inexplicablybookish) I really enjoyed the alert emails for April's reads. I in my email box a lot more than I hang around Goodreads, typically ;), and those emails will serve as a reminder that I want to finish other books and get started on the new ones for April!

And I see Fool lost to Hitchhiker by 1 point ... does that mean we are reading that one too?? Pleeeeaasseee? :)

message 216: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Yup... both books are being read since they were so close and I know alot of people were going to read FOOL anyway... with or without the group.

Occasionally I am known to add a book like that!

I dont send the reminder emails out, goodreads does.... It can see when i have the books scheduled to be read so it automatically generates.

message 218: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Yay Becky!

Elizabeth of Silver's Reviews (silversreviews) Shadow of the Wind is an awesome book...I hope everyone enjoys it....I read it during the summer of 2008.

Let me know when the discussion of the book is.

message 220: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (inexplicablybookish) Hurray!! Now I have a "good reason" to buy this and read it like I've been wanting to :)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Ordered from Amazon yesterday!

Rebecca (inexplicablybookish) Elizabeth wrote: "Ordered from Amazon yesterday!"

Hahahaha awesome. I already own Hitchhiker and have been wanting to read it for years so I'm excited for that. And I work in a bookstore and get a nice discount and Fool has been calling to me from the new release shelf ... so now I can tell it to shut up because I'm buying it! ;)

message 223: by Apokripos (last edited Mar 25, 2009 06:14PM) (new)

Apokripos (apokalypse) I envy all of you because you can participate in this month's group discussion... I want to read this month's books but the prices of our books here are soooo over the top expensive I'm hesitating to buy those books... well blame that to greedy capitalists here... umpf!!!

message 224: by Sara ♥ (last edited Mar 25, 2009 11:55PM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Greedy capitalists, eh? Hmmmm.... You could always buy the e-book online.... I know it's not the same thing as having the real book, but if you really wanted to read one of them...

Fool for $11.99 (American)

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for $7.19

Shadow of the Wind for $10.50

You'd have to look into how all the downloading stuff works...

message 225: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 997 comments Wow there was quite the squall in here about YA. I'm WAY over 18 (more than twice that) and I must say that I personally read and enjoy YA - in many cases it is a simple fun read. Heck Book Thief is classified as YA and it is loved by many in this group.

I don't think that having a YA title in our "reads" will somehow lower the caliber of people in this group to a bunch of mall talking teens - "Dude u r so my bff - Duh!"

Everyone I see here seems to be mature and intelligent (I feel like I should add a jab in here like except xyz - but that would be childish). The "monthly reads" are a sugguestion and personally I find some of my favorite books by reading a book club suggestion that I would normally NOT read. That is how you find treasures. So I say...Bring on the YA and if it is not your cup of tea - pass for that month and wait for the next.

Elizabeth (Alaska) And I say pick a genre. If you want to nominate a YA for that genre, go ahead. Then people can vote on the book given it's own merit within the genre. But why would you pick a book *because* it's YA?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Actually, if you'll notice, I hadn't said anything for a couple of days. But the subject was continued by several others. You found reason to respond here, too. It's clear that May will bring a YA book. No matter. I'm not going to read the humorous novel for April either. As I said in another post, I was really glad this came up as one I will look forward to reading was nominated. And I wouldn't have thought I'd volunteer to read a humorous novel.

Lori, may I make a suggestion for June? June 1945 marked the beginning of the end of World War II. There are quite a number of excellent novels about World War II, both current ones and those issued over the last umpteen years. I see there are members who read historical fiction, so perhaps this will be somethings others will like.

Alright.

I am stepping up and shutting the YA talk down.
I am getting a headache. This battle of the YA Wits is driving me nuts, really.

Please. Let it end here.

You moderator is BEGGING you. I am on the brink of losing my sanity.

message 229: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) Elizabeth, I kind of like the idea for June about WWII. I have always had an interest in WWII and would love to see the books that might come up.

message 230: by Jamie (new)

Jamie I've been loving all of the theme ideas you all have been coming up with lately. WWII is a great idea, too. There are many wonderful books that would fit this theme.

message 231: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey Oooh a WWII theme, there are a ton of books out there. I can't wait to see what everyone nominates for that. I love history and especially historical fiction books.

message 232: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) You know--I've read a couple of WWII-ish books lately. So far, I'm having a great experience. I say bring it on! Good idea, Elizabeth!

message 233: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments I think that is a great idea too for June.

I have another suggestion for some month...I don't care when but some month can we have a Mystery theme?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Excellent, Lisa. I'd love a good mystery thrown into the mix.

message 235: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Mysteries don't feel summery? Hmmm... I never thought of it that way. I know what feels summery.... (Fiona and Elizabeth--skip the rest of this paragraph!!) Chick lit! ;) A lot of them are considered "beach" reads. (At least that's how Borders advertises them at the beginning of summer...)

What type of book feels summery to you, Fiona?

message 236: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I think mysteries feel Wintery. I think because I mostly do Agatha Christies. Earle Stanley Gardner is probably summery since Mason lives in California.

Elizabeth (Alaska) OK, Fiona, if Mysteries come up in *your* summer, you can pretend you've gone to visit the Aussies on the list. It will be *their* winter.

message 238: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments Well like I said whenever...I just wanted to throw that out there for sometime in the future. :~)

Elizabeth (Alaska) We haven't had a summer for a couple of years, either, Fiona. I think our climates might be similar, except we get more rain. But I'm having a hard enough time planning my reading for next week, so who knows what we might want come July/August . . .

message 240: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) For summer you can also do a beach/water theme. For example, nominate books that center around water, like The Mermaid Chair, Robinson Crusoe.

message 241: by Mosca (new)

Mosca | 828 comments Summers here in northern New Mexico (USA) used to be glorious, high-mountain cool, and green. Now they seem to be getting longer, hotter, and drier. This is scary because there can be less moisture and more wild fires and forest fires. I'll bet Austrailians would settle for shorter summers.

OK, before we start planning too far into the future, YA next month as the second catagory, and everyone seems to like Elizabeths suggestion of WWII for June....

Let's hold off with the other suggestions will we get closer to those months, but this is some great brainstorming....

Chick lit, Mystery... all good ideas.

message 244: by Becky (new)

message 250: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Persuasion is my favorite.... The movies are all great, too... (I've seen 3 versions...)
