An Actual Introduction Thread
Hi there! I'm Heidi. I'm one of the moderators here in TerminalCoffee. I live smack dab in the middle of the U.S. of A. I was born and raised in the New Orleans area, attended high school northwest of Houston, TX, and have been an Arkansas transplant for over 20 years. I have aspirations to move away, am in the process of applying for grad school, and I've worked at a hospital for almost 10 years. I work in addictions research as a clinic manager/study recruiter/screener/outreach coordinator. I adore my nephews, family, friends, love my dog Robby more than people, historical fiction, nonfiction, music, snail mail, my boyfriend, & collecting mailed post cards, nail polish, and I am a ferocious defender of our happy clan here in TC. I am not particularly fond of the casual use of the word "hate," flat out meanness (especially when expressed and directed towards a person with whom the person is not acquainted)... I like to think of myself as patient towards others, but when my feathers get ruffled, I can be passionate in my response to the feather ruffling. I am also passionate in my response towards something I adore. I don't own a television. I don't miss it. I've met a few TC members in real life - Felarry, Smetchie, Gus (no longer active in this group)... and I adore each of them. Also, I have a collection of celebrity men that I affectionately refer to as my "manquarium." LG (Lobstergirl) originally coined the term "boyquarium," but I like "manquarium" better, so it sticks. I am territorial with my manquarium men.
I'm Donna and I used to be a reporter for a minor metropolitan newspaper. But my dream has always been to write fiction for a living-- something that's frowned upon even by the most minor of journalistic publications (right, Misha?). Anyway, now I spend my time writing novels-- although it would be a huge stretch to say I'm making a living at it. It would also be a stretch to say I've dedicated my life to my art. The truth is, though I've completed three books, I'm easily distracted and can usually be found with my head buried in my kindle, reading escapist fluff.I live in Florida, where one of my novels is set. I watch TV when I'm not reading, and recently became hooked on "Downton Abbey."
Donna Callea wrote: "I'm Donna and I used to be a reporter for a minor metropolitan newspaper. She never did, but she did attempt starts to a few childrens' books. I don't think she ever submitted them to publishers for review or feedback. My uncle was also a career-journalist who is now a communications consultant. He's written several books and fairly recently produced a documentary about the newspaper in Joplin continuing operation on the day after the tornado hit.
I bet more journalists aspire to write novels than you think.
Oh crap... I just realized you said writing novels is frowned upon by most journalistic publications, not journalists. I'm sure I'm telling you what you already know. I grew up around journalists and politicians - my uncle, my stepmother, their friends. Journalists do it for love... lord knows the real ones, the good ones... the ones with integrity never get paid enough for what they do. It's a very underappreciated profession.
Misha wrote: "I read that as a reference to journalistic publications preferring facts over stuff that's made up. :-)"I should've caught that.
Thanks everyone, for the welcome! Good luck with the freelancing, Misha. I hear what you're saying about the grind. It's a very tough time now to be in print journalism. And you're right, Heidi, no one goes into it for the money. Now, being an indie author of no renown-- now that's where the money is. For every 99 cent book I sell, I get 35 cents. And some months I sell 10 or 15. But I'm not complaining. I'm lucky enough, at this point in my life, to be able to do what I want.By the way, Misha, I love your name. It's the name of an important character-- an angel, actually-- in one of my books. You're not an angel, are you?
She is an angel of faux law vengeance, hilarity and kick assery.Hi Donna! Glad you popped into another thread. :)
Misha wrote: "Also, is your angel named Misha a Supernatural reference? I have only recently discovered the show on Netflix and am obsessed."Misha, I've never seen Supernatural. Just googled it, and found the actor Misha Collins. Wow. I'll have to check out the series on Netflix. Just finished watching the first season of Downton there. Have to get Hulu to see Season 2.
As for my Misha, he's the New Year's angel of indeterminate Eastern European origins.
I hear what you're saying about McClatchy. I worked for the Daytona Beach News-Journal for many, many years as a reporter. It was family owned and an extremely quirky place to work, but I had some fun times there. Worked with some great people, a dwindling few of whom are still there. Got out just before it got sold. (Not to McClatchy, but still. Glad I got out when I did).

For once, I'm speechless.

It's simply un-American.

I have better things to do. TV would suck up ALL my time if I had one. I know it would. I fall into the trap of watching tv for hours on end when I visit my mother. FOX News, even... and it pisses me off every time. And I still watch it. So yeah... no tv in my home.

Are we thinking Russian spy?
Misha, great idea.I'm Sarah, also known around here as Pi or by any number of irrational numbers, thankfully rounded off.
I'm a musician and a writer and a rugby fan and a beer fan and a runner and a horse person and a dog person. I'm probably other persons as well. Also an elephant, but that's mostly because I'm too lazy to change my avatar.
Oh, and I've met lots of TC people, but not Heidi yet :(
ETA: Oh yeah, and I'm a TC mod.
Hi, I’m Jim. I am also a mod here and an oldtimer in the great land of TC. I hail from the great state of Wisconsin. I like baseball (Cubs Fan), football (Packers Fan), futbol(Arsenal & Chicago Fire fan), beer, music, cheese(which we really haven’t discussed in a long time) and mostly Mystery books although I do give other genre’s quite a few reads.
I'm Amy...or Amelia, as you prefer. I've been here since TC's creation by the infamous and invisible RandomAnthony, aka RA. You will hear him mentioned, or see LOTS of crazy threads he started. I was always convinced that he was writing a book on some sort of sociological oddity or other...
Anyway, some people know me well, others don't. I'm a little inconsistent. I have a rather obsessive personality, so there are times when my current obsession, or the fact that my bosses do occasionally make me work, interferes with my attendance.
I am one of the only conservatives (Republican) in TC, so I rarely discuss politics. Oh, that goes ditto for religion. But, I LOVE films, books, music, games (any kind...seriously, any), art, travel, pretty much anything fun. And, I love TC.
I work as a licensed assistant to a group of 5 stock brokers. It's just the 5 of them and me in the office though, so I often have a lot of free time. I balance that between GR, reading, Netflix and a wee bit of FB. Mostly games, I'm a terrible facebooker. Yes, I get paid to watch Netflix.
As for sports, I don't follow any these days. Apparently I am a bad American, as I do not have television. I have a tv, two of them actually. I use them for DVDs, PS3 (or PS2) and Netflix...sometimes for my CDs to be played through the surround sound system. But, alas, no television service. Why, Phil? Because, it's a racket! They charge ridiculous amounts of money to give me hundreds of channels of shite I don't want to see while trying to bilk me on channels I never asked for subscription too. Pfft. Everything I love is a time suck, but cable service is a SCAM. I refuse to pay. I told my husband to tell them what to do with their stupid box when they tried to charge me for some NFL Gold channel.
Sorry, what was that SP said about tangents?
Oh, yeah, sports. I do love Rugby, NHL Hockey, Rally driving, Formula One, Cricket (recaps) and Tennis (only grand slams). I used to love Baseball, the Rangers circa 1993. What a fun year that was to live in Dallas! Then Nolan Ryan retired and the whole thing went to hell. NBA and NFL has gotten too big and too rich for my blood. Though the sports themselves are fun and exciting, I just can't get attached to it. It's all about attachment for me. I have to have a team that feels like "mine" to cheer for. Living in Portland, that leaves me with the Portland Trailblazers...not gonna happen. They lost me when Clyde Drexler left.
Oh, I have 3 kitties and a Mr.

I forgot, I'm a staunch defender of my friends here at TC. So be nice. You can disagree and debate without being an arseface. Especially if you are new, post away - with respect!

Keep meaning to go to Kansas to visit my friend Crystal. Heiders, how far are you from Salina, Kansas? Like, give it to me in hours-ish.

I want to go to SP's bar when she's playing for the roller derby! :)

I never formally (or informally) introduced myself in this group. So here goes...My name is Aliyah. I am an undergraduate student who's studying towards a degree in Audiology. I am from South Africa and live in Cape Town. Apart from reading and posting comments on GR, I'm into hiking, I gym a lot and play video games (sometimes). I used to watch anime, but not so much anymore.
Recently, decided to become more involved in student societies, despite having a busy academic schedule at varsity. I'm not so much into sport and I only watch sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup and the Olympics. (I have always been like this, I don't know why).
IRL, I am a bit of a tomboy and straight-talking/say things like they are. One of my weaknesses includes procrastinating too much by watching random Youtube videos, when I have pending assignments. Oh, and I have one older brother and live with my mom.

Honestly, I thought once that Misha was in fact British. Online Misha I mean.
I'm janine - my TC friends like to call me j9 - and despite what it says on my profile I'm not from Mauritius, I'm Dutch. I studied Dutch literature and while I look for something more permanent/interesting I work at a callcenter and as a freelance editor. I love books, language, music, tv shows, cats, and a few other things. English is not my first language but that doesn't mean I won't call you out on your mistakes. Other genre's what, Jim? I also enjoy being a mod here and having cool titles.

Or at least that's how it'll start out.
