Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19219 comments Yay! It's hard to decide. My suggestion is to click on a couple of friends or fellow YLTO profiles, go to their bookshelf and sort by which ever thing you're looking for (author in this case). It's what I do!

message 3: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments That´s a great idea. This challenge is so exciting and I can´t wait starting to tick off the books :-)

Janice (jamasc) | 60019 comments I'm glad you are joining us Alexandra. You have some great titles on your list. :)

message 7: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments Thank you, Janice! I can´t wait to get started on the books I chosse. :-)

message 8: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments Oh no, I just realised that my choice for "o" is too short.

message 9: by Neenee (last edited Jan 31, 2013 03:36AM) (new)

Neenee I chose the same Yoko Ogawa's book too and realised later that it's short by just 20 pages!! Quite frustrating eh?

message 10: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments I know, what a mess. Did you find another one?

message 11: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19219 comments Hmmm, some of my favourite books/authors are O.

George Orwell is the classic. My favourite book last year was Purge. I just read Anil's Ghost this month was great. My must read by the end of this year is The Rook. And The Tiger's Wife is supposed to be good.

There's 6 suggestions ;)

message 12: by Neenee (new)

Neenee Yep. But my challenge is with the first letter of the title. So, I chose The Help.

How about George Orwell? Most of his books we can get easily.

message 13: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments Oh right, this is a great choice actually! Thanks Rusalka and Neenee!!!

I want to read Anil's Ghost. Most reviews are very positive. But my book A's already taken.

message 15: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60019 comments Another suggestion is Wesley the Owl: The Remarkable Love Story of an Owl and His Girl. It's a fun read about a woman and her owl.

message 16: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments That also sounds quite intrigueing (did I spell that right? It somehow looks wrong). Now I really have to decide between all the interesting reads.
Thank you so much for these suggestions!

message 17: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments Yay, I´m finally done with my list - let the reading begin!

message 18: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60019 comments I hope you enjoy Wesley as much as I did. :)

message 19: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Yes, I liked Wesley too! I have read a few others on your list as well. Great choices, Alexandra.

message 20: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments I´m sure I will love Wesley, Janice, I can´t wait to meet him :-).

Thank you, Cherie. I can´t wait to start on the books. The moment you put them on the list, you want to read all of them at the same time...

message 21: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60019 comments Isn't that the truth, Alexandra? I can't read fast enough, though. LOL!

message 22: by Ava Catherine (new)

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments Alexandra, I am so glad that you are joining in on the alphabet challenge. Also, remember you may change your books if you decide something on the list doesn't appeal to you any more.

Happy reading! ; )

message 23: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments I´ve finished the first book for the alphabet challenge, yay. Luckily I could combine it with the February toppler.

I really liked Midnight Riot, I think I might continue reading the whole series.

message 24: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments I´ve finished Bretonische Verhältnisse and just loved it. Monsieur Dupin is the new Brunetti!

message 25: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60019 comments Great job on completing 3 books already. The Toppler was a charm for you. :)

message 26: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments The toppler definitely helped me to finally get some reading done :-). Even though it did not help my bursting TBR shelf. When are we doing the next toppler? I´m missing it already...

I know, Alexandra! The next toppler will be in April. I THINK it is a 24 hour toppler rather than a week long. I'm looking forward to it, too!

message 28: by Alexandra (last edited Feb 24, 2013 11:36PM) (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments Finished XO - not as good as the previous books from this series.

MOving on to 14.

message 29: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60019 comments 14 seems to be garnering a bunch of attention lately. I'm looking forward to your comments when you finish.

message 30: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments I´ve finished 14. I did not like it, it was just missing something though I can not quite put my finger on what it´s missing. But I was definitely tempted to put it aside a couple of times.

message 31: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments Finished Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Wow, what a great book.

message 32: by Josée Leon (new)

Josée Leon (join_bookland) I loved the movie. I'll have to read the book too!

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments Josee wrote: "I loved the movie. I'll have to read the book too!"

The book is amazing. It has a certain melancholy though, you are torn between smiling and crying because it´s so bittersweet. I loved it!

message 34: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments Finished The Other Boleyn Girl, it was quite interesting. Now moving on to Haunted Ground

message 35: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments Finished Haunted Ground (Nora Gavin, #1) by Erin Hart . Moving on to "I".

message 36: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments Finished Geisha, A Life by Mineko Iwasaki . Now moving on to Escape.

message 37: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60019 comments What did you think of Geisha?

message 38: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments I wrote a little review but I don´t know how to link it :-)... In a nutshell: I really liked the book, it was quite interesting to learn more about this fascinating world of its own and I´ve found out that a lot of clichees are not true. What I did not like unfortunatly was the author as she kept on pointing out how great she was as a geisha, how beautiful she looked, how everybody was jealous of her, how the other girls were so mean because they wanted to be like her etc.. That was a bit annoying. But overall I would recommend this book!

message 39: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19219 comments Thanks Alexandra. I have had this one on my shelf for years since I read Memoirs of a Geisha. Just never got to it. I am glad I have a heads up about the narrator though.

To post a link to your review, go to your review, copy the URL and then paste it in a comment box.

I had heard that Arthur Golden based Memoirs of a Geisha on this woman. I may have to read it in spite of the fact that she's a bit egotistical.

message 41: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments The facts that one learns from this book are quite interesting especially if you´ve read Memoirs of a Geisha. It seems to be a fascinating world of its own... I can really recommend it and the part about the author might be just my personal impression.

message 42: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments Finished Escape by Carolyn Jessop . It is such a moving story and I can only admire Carolyn Jessop for her strength and braveness. I can highly recommend this book.

message 43: by Ava Catherine (new)

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments It is great when you find a fantastic book like this one, isn't it? Glad it was a winner for you. You are really making grand progress in your challenge! Congratulations! ; )

I don't think it is just you, Alexandra. I felt the same way about her. I read Memoirs of a Geisha way back when, and then was interested and read Geisha, A Life. I felt she was very snobby, but look at the life she lead!

I am so glad you felt the same way, Cherie! I did not want to be rude, criticising her personality but that was the way I felt when I read her book... Thanks :-)

message 47: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 679 comments Finished reading The History of Love. It is a beautiful book, full of emotions. I could hardly put it down. I´ve been quite lucky with the books I picked lately.

Now I´m moving on to The Girl Who Played with Fire.

I thought The History of Love was beautiful too. I think I had to read it 3 times to really understand what was going on, but I loved so many of the passages. I really liked the language especially.

I liked the Steig Larsson books too. Too bad he passed on and there won't be any more.

message 49: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I loved Steig Larsson's books. I hope you enjoy the book Alexandra.

I felt the same way about The History of Love, Cherie. I might have to read it again once in a while as I am sure I will discover things that I did not notice at the first time...
