I appreciate your saying that, Amelia.

Online discussions are so different from discussing things in person. I'm surprised we do as well as we do without the cues of body language and vocal intonation.

I sometimes find that online it would take typing too many words to explain my take on a topic, so I write something that expresses my attitude, and it's over the top. Face to face, I could say more in less time and add an eye roll or a smile and be perfectly understood.

Cam | 112 comments Most everything someone states on the internet isn't very private. It seems like some sites I belong too other than goodreads ties into Facebook.

message 162: by Cam (new)

Cam | 112 comments Oh. That is good. I like my privacy and I am on another site not goodreads related and I believe they tie into facebook, but I'm not 100% sure.

You mean it may be toxic?

message 167: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments Well, it does not smell. It says it is non-toxic but it has already proven to be false on some of the other asterisked qualities.

message 168: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) What an ass.

message 169: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments I just don't get it.

message 170: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3595 comments I didn't get it for many years, but I've learned a lot by living next door to someone like Ed. They're miserable, and they do what they can to spread the misery around.

message 171: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24782 comments Mod
I don't understand why a person wouldn't block Ed, if they can't stand Ed and don't want any further contact with him. Seems like a simple enough solution.

Sarah | 13814 comments Lobstergirl wrote: "I don't understand why a person wouldn't block Ed, if they can't stand Ed and don't want any further contact with him. Seems like a simple enough solution."

If moderators block someone instead of dealing with the problem, the blocked individual gets to set the tone of the group.

message 173: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24782 comments Mod
Ed and his sockpuppets were banned from the group, as I recall. Thus no one in the group has to deal with these individuals. Then anyone who wants to, including moderators, can block them. Friend requests prevented. Problem solved.

message 174: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments You can't ban a sock puppet from a public group. If he wants to show up under a different name, he can. It's really bad etiquette. That's what we've been dealing with. Somebody who tries and tries and tries to get into the group after having been asked to leave.

message 175: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24782 comments Mod
Well, it's true someone can create an infinite number of sockpuppets. What I have been referring to is Heidi's problem of Ed, specifically, trying to friend her which is the issue she raised.

message 176: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Very good point Misha. Numerous people have done just that.

Cam | 112 comments This was an interesting topic, but what is a "sock puppet"?

message 178: by Aliyah (new)

Aliyah | 369 comments Why was the group converted from a private group, to a public one? I thought that the point was to keep trolls at bay...

message 179: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments we had to make it private until everyone learned the secret handshake and then we went public again. anyone that does not know the handshake or the associated fight song should be shunned immediately

Ooh, Ally McBeal reference. I liked Fish.

message 187: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments Fish was entertaining.

I had no idea I was referencing Ally McBeal. I usually stick to Looney Tunes references and any others are usually pure happenstance.

message 188: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Every time I hear "bygones" my mind flashes to Fish.

I saw that actor in something just recently. He was in "Clear and Present Danger" and a recent "Law & Order:SVU."

message 189: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments It was a good show. I really liked all the quirky characters.

You know Phil, I was told at one point during my troll speculation period something like "wait until Phil gets back" or "your lucky Phil isn't here". I think you were suppose to kick my trolly butt or something.

Too bad we just ended up being kick ass twinnies that rock the casbah!

message 195: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Ally McBeal. Girl Detective? My oldest was Ally McBeal for Halloween this year. Only the young, hip crowd could figure out who she was.

message 198: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3595 comments When this group was made temporarily private a while back, Lg said," I get why the group was temporarily made private, and I really do hope it's only temporary, but private groups make me uncomfortable. It has the connotation of a secret club, a secret society. That you have to pass some kind of test before you're deemed acceptable. It feels inherently a little hostile. Like a country club where only rich, white people can get in. Or golf clubs or social clubs that only admit men." I miss Lg.

message 199: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm disappointed that the Ficus has not welcomed me back.

Private groups are not looked upon fondly.
