Donna Davis (seattlebookmama) | 41 comments This is NOT the book by that title already in the system.

Title: (above)
Author: Yuri Sdobnikov, translator
ISBN 5-01-000318-X
Publisher: Progress Publishers
Format: Hardcover Book
Description: The life of Karl Marx, described by an official committee made up of 9 members of the Institute of Marxism-Leninism of the C.P.S.U. Central Committee. This book was published in Moscow (I hold it in my hands, and that is what's on the title page). The USSR no longer exists, but that is where this was originally written and published in 1973.

Pathfinder Press is the publisher of the book by the same name that is in the system currently. We all know that a book name can be used many times by different writers, but the automated system WILL NOT let me put this book in, because it insists that it is a duplicate! To make matters worse, this book is also exactly 630 pages, just like the Pathfinder edition.

It's not the title that is the issue; it's the ISBN. No two GR book entries can have the same ISBN, but you can add your book without an ISBN if you like. It seems likely that it's the same book, though. Publishers often have imprints or are known by multiple names. Also, two publishers might have printed it in the US and USSR with the same ISBN but under different press names.

Not as common now, but it still happens.

Donna Davis (seattlebookmama) | 41 comments No. I checked. I actually have a relationship with Pathfinder. They may have printed theirs because this one is no longer being sold, but trust me, they did not have any relationship, publishing OR otherwise, with the Soviets, and the Soviets only had ONE publisher.

When I get on next time, I will try without the ISBN.

Did you check with Pathfinder to see if they had in fact printed an edition of this book? WorldCat shows the edition with that ISBN# as being published by Progress Publishers and I see no edition published by Pathfinder recorded on WorldCat. I also see no evidence on the Pathfinder Press site of them publishing this book. Amazon and Google Books show Progress Publishers as well, we can't use bookseller data but I'm using it to illustrate that there is a pattern of this book being published by Progress Publishers.

When I did a Google Search for "karl marx" pathfinder, it appears that there was a Karl Marx biography that was part of a Pathfinder Biographies series. I think it's highly likely that somewhere along the line in the sharing of internet DBs someone made a transcription error and the publisher of the edition in question can probably be changed.

Seems reasonable.

Donna Davis (seattlebookmama) | 41 comments I will see if I can find the other one. With both on hand, it may be easier to send in the corrections.
