wheat fields of glass [s]

I have been on a mission to collect books from when I was young so I could remember how I was as in past years. A scene, if you may, has been playing in my head for 2 years now, but I can't place the book. I remember, vaguely, how descriptive the book was. In the scene their is a child in a wheat field but the wheat is made of glass and when you break it, small, hexagonal seeds spill out, above the child is a bright blue sky....any thoughts?

I think I have read that...but I can't remember the title either. I seem to remember that there was a field of roundish rocks and that the rocks actually turned out to be part of the life cycle of native animals.

Could it be The Green Book? They go to another planet and there is grain like glass there.

There was someone else asking about this book a couple of months ago and I remembered the description of the glass grain from that. I had put it in my to read, so I dredged the title up from there.
