Sarah Oxford (sarahloxford) | 286 comments Hi,

I hope some of you lovely people can help me!

I adore my kindle touch but I was a little disappointed when the paperwhite came out so soon after I got given the touch. Now, due to family and friends knowing me so well, I have amassed a gift certificate balance on amazon of around £95 and am wondering whether I should buy a paperwhite and sell my touch.

What do you think? Is a paperwhite worth it? (Not interested in the fire as have a nexus 7)
Has anyone any experience of selling a kindle second hand? Is there much of a market for them?

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I still have a kk. I won't upgrade until it falls apart or they bring out a new kindle with a beer dispenser.

message 3: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Do you read in the dark a lot? That is the only reason to upgrade if it isn't broken.

My KK broke and I upgraded to that because I always read in the dark. That is the one selling point why I picked that.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I will upgrade when the first colour eink comes out. I won't be able to suppress my early adopter instincts.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I dunno about selling used kindles. You could start a thread specifically for that, if you like.

Maybe see how many are for sale on eBay and at what price?

If I was in the market for a new kindle I'd get the paper white, I think.

message 6: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine | 575 comments I wouldn't buy a second hand kindle, but i know there is a market for them.As Elle says if you read in the dark i would highly recommend,if not wait for your touch to break and then upgrade.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments I would love a paperwhite, not just for the light, but also for the cool features like time to end of chapter. There is a thread on the zoo about selling a touch and ebay seemed the best place

message 8: by HJ (new)

HJ I loved the idea of a paperwhite until I realised it doesn't have sound on it. I often use my Kindle to listen to audiobooks, especially if I'm awake in the night. And if we ever get Whispersync over here then having sound will matter. But if you only want to read, then a paperwhite looks lovely.

Ditto - but preferably with a Shiraz optic.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

I've been looking at the kindles for sale on amazon, and it looks as if they don't do the KK any more - I can't see the kindle touch either....

I love my KK, not sure what I will replace it with when it wears out..

message 11: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I'm still in hope one day they'll make a KK with a lit screen :(

message 12: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments My old KK has been on the market for months, but not even a sniff...

message 13: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Hey, no fair! My KK didn't come with Smellyvison!

message 14: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Oxford (sarahloxford) | 286 comments Thanks, I do read at night so a light would probably be good.
I always thought I'd use the speakers and do have a couple of audiobooks on my touch but have honestly never used it for that. My phone or nexus 7 or ipod do a better job of playing audiobooks.

It looks like I'd get about £50 for my kindle touch on ebay so I'll end up spending about £60 of my 'book money' on upgrading. It's a tough call whether it's worth it!

I do like the idea of knowing how long until the end of the chapter.

message 15: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Sarah wrote: "I do like the idea of knowing how long until the end of the chapter. "

yes, I like that. But others here have complained they can't turn it off. Unfortunately we've got to the state where every kindle, whether it's a device or an app does slightly different things, and I think they really need to sort themselves out and get the software up to the same standard across all platforms...

message 16: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I don't really think you should. £60 worth of books would be better - if you have the official lighted cover then I don't see a reason for updating it.

I mean it's your choice, but the only reason I went for the KPW was that I had no Kindle to fall back on. If I had a new Kindle I wouldn't of got one.

If I'd known nobody would buy my old KK, I probably wouldn't have bought the PW. Well, actually I would, but I like to kid myself that I wouldn't...

message 18: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments My lighted cover suited me well until my entire set up decided to just die over a few week period. I'm normally the type of get all the latest gadgets but tbh I don't see a point in updating your Kindle unless you need it for a specific reason.

message 19: by SewingandCaring (new)

SewingandCaring (washyourhands) Firstly I just updated my touch with the new American patch and the new UI has the time feature on it. Secondly yesterday I admitted to myself that I resent the touch and it's shitty shitty infra-red touch system and ordered a paperwhite. It is unbearably laggy and way too sensitive and the official covers are tacky and arse.

It may be fine for a lot of people but I haven't read on mine since we got the iPad and that's as heavy as reading a hardback encyclopaedia all the time.

message 20: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Oxford (sarahloxford) | 286 comments Thanks for all your thoughts everyone.
£60 worth of books is a lot to spend on upgrade when there's nothing wrong with my current kindle. I'm just a sucker for new technology and retail therapy too if I'm honest.
I'm going to wait and see how much of my gift certificate is left close to when it expires and see how I feel about it then.

I didn't realise you could actually update the software on the touch. I might look into that when I'm home and back in wi-fi.

Manual patch from the US site, updates are automatic but there is no eta on the UK roll out, I used it and it's fine.

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments I'm happy with my KK, although like Kew, I don't know what I would replace it with when it needs replacing. I do not want a touch screen though, so unless KK is updated and a new model brought out, then it would be the basic kindle for me. I had toyed with the idea of a fire (just for the colour books and cook books etc) but will probably not bother as that is also a touch screen.

£60 books or £60 upgrade when not needed - for me the books would win every time (Even though my TBR list is as long as an orang-utan's arms - my wishlist is almost as long)

message 23: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine | 575 comments There was an update for the touch rolled out on the 9th Jan 2013.

message 24: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Oxford (sarahloxford) | 286 comments Thanks for that!

Now the only reason I'd have to upgrade is light and that's definitely not worth £60 of books to me. I have a bedside lamp that'll do just fine!

message 25: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne Pat | 42 comments My kk was fine but I love to read at night and it's a core turning out the light when its sleepy time. I upgraded to a PW and am loving it. I don't need it do do anything else but allow me to read in the dark and in the sun when I am on the beach, which I am doing a lot of just now. I think I will keep this until it falls apart. I'm keeping the kk just as a back up.

message 26: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne Pat | 42 comments Beer dispenser would be useless to me. I only drink water.

Well, maybe they could attach a water cooler...?

;0)

message 28: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne Pat | 42 comments Now that's an idea.

message 29: by SewingandCaring (new)

SewingandCaring (washyourhands) What we need is the brew app, for 50p someone delivers a nice cup of tea with a couple of chocolate biscuits or a slice of cake as optional extras.

I just wanted to say that I did this update and am very happy with my touch now!
It may not dispense beer, or water, or have a brew app (which I love the idea of) but I can now view book covers and I get the 'time to end' function too. Very useful for figuring out whether I have time to read another chapter before teh end of my lunch break!

message 33: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments I like the time to end function as well Sarah.
I am back on my cracked KK reading my current book which is part of a complete collection by one writer. I am at chapter 19 of the first book and have just passed 1%.

That would depress me!

message 35: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments It is difficult Jud as even with a real book you are able to see yourself making progress. I think there are over 20 books in the collection so each will possibly possibly finish around 5%.

message 36: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments What collection is it?

message 37: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments The Complete Works of L.M.Montgomery.She wrote the Anne of Green Gablesseries which I loved as a child.
I saw them on the collections thread the whole series plus all her other books for less than £2 and couldn't resist the opportunity to wallow in nostalgia.I am stunned at how beautifully they are written and so glad to get the opportunity to revisit them.I think they must be the ultimate in feelgood fiction!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Sarah, you need to get this

Megan Follows is magic.

I loved those - I also have the Story Girl on dvd, what a lovely series that was! I only have the first two on dvd but hope to collect some of the others later.

message 40: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Oh, I've never read those. I could be tempted to get the collection

Thanks Patti! If only I had 1000hrs free to watch it. I may try one dvd and see how I get on .
Oh Jud you should get it almost 7,000 pages in total what a bargain!
20 full novels, several short stories, her autobiography and poetry and then a non-fiction book about magnificent women. I will be reading till my eyes bleed :@)

Andrea Baker (rosewall) | 102 comments Sorry to but in, but the Anne of Green Gables series is one of my all time favourites too, and I've just introduced my eight year old daughter to the first film. She loved it almost as much as I did:)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Once you hit your 1000th post you won't feel like a newbie anymore Andrea. ;)

I reckon the scenery in the Anne shows is just as important to the stories as any of the characters. Magnificent.

And as I said, Megan Follows is magic. Canadian, of course. ;)

I saw in a couple other things after she was Anne as she was great in those too.

message 47: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Baker (rosewall) | 102 comments I'd agree Patti - it is on my list of things I must do to visit Prince Edward Island.

message 48: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Finished the first book and only at 3%!
