Only problem I have now is that if I end this here it seems somewhat of an empty post, so what I tend to do in these potentially embarrassing internet pauses is to fill the gap with a mildly interesting fact, for example: If you really look at the & sign on your keyboard it looks like a stick figure doing that thing dogs do when they drag their bottoms along the carpet...
Not that I'm not enjoying this uplifting and most enlightening discussion about the various attributes of the ampersand, but I'd like to insert a comment in the original thread re: buying a paperwhite. The comment was made that "I'm not interested in a Fire, because I have a Nexus" or something along those lines. However, I feel compelled to point out the Fire also has a backlit screen, so you can read in the dark. You aren't under any obligation to quit using your Nexus if you don't want to, but considering the bottom of the line Fire is around the same price as the PW, also has back-lighting, and as a bonus is in COLOR, I frankly don't understand why Amazon even bothered coming out with the PW. You get a lot fewer functions for about the same money. Also, why sell the Touch? It never hurts to have a "spare" on hand, in case of a mishap. I have my original Kindle Keyboard, a Kindle Touch, a Kindle Fire HD, a Nook, a tablet with the Kindle app, 2 computers with the Kindle app and the Nook app, and if all else fails, a stack of actual "real" books!
I accidently dropped a Kindle once, and that was all she wrote for that one. You can say you won't drop yours, but I didn't think I'd ever be so clumsy as to drop mine, either. But thanks to an energetic puppy, it got knocked from my grasp and landed on a hard surface. Just putting in my nose where it doesn't belong, but I'd think about hanging onto the Touch, just in case.
I completely agree that you don't need a paperwhite if you own a fire or a nexus, you *could* buy it but I guarantee you that you wont use it. Only real reason to buy a paperwhite is if you already own an iPad, want something just to read on, and don't want to spend the money on a iPad mini. \o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/

& is ruined for life for me.Kaska - mine also stops randomly. It doesn't go as far as freezes but sometimes mid-reading I have to wait a minute or two before it finally changes a page etc. I wouldn't worry about insuring it though. Amazon are very good at giving you a new one if yours dies.
I have found my kindle white very good at solving a twenty year old marital dispute....Sometimes I read while hubby is watching one of his boring military programs on TV - and I needed to switch all the lounge lights on. (Which annoyed him. :( ) With the kindle white I don't need the lights and the moaning has stopped. :)
The light is a real bonus Karen though I find it harder on my eyes than the inbuilt light on the KK cover. My PW wifi has been rather dodgy and unpredictable lately, hope it is just a blip!
It depends on how bright you have it I suppose, is it just me or do they have the brightness suggestions the wrong way round? I use a high setting for dark rooms and a lower one in brightly lit rooms me self.
Mine is on 6 during the day and then up to 17 in the dark. Would like to add that it really is a different, nicer, experience reading on any of the kindles (excluding the fire) than it is on a tablet because of the matt screen. I made a flow chart for my dad explaining which one he wanted for what purpose here: http://imgur.com/mdHRmU0
Great flow chart there.I have a kindle keyboard but was bought an iPad as a Birthday present so now have Kindle as an Ap on it.
Have to say though that I need to work out how to change the brightness settings on it though. It is quite harsh...

Double-tap the home button, then swipe your finger to the right, along the row of icons. You will get the volume/brightness & playback controls.
@ Grampy. You said you didnt know why they brought out the PW when the fire etc. I haven't got Wi-fi in Wales. So 3G is essential for me. So its the only alternative to the KK for a replacement or new purchase. I have a 3G KK and now love my PW but a fire would be totally useless for me.
Useful thread for those of us with no kindle as yet. I'm a sucker for getting the best technology available, but only if there's a valid reason, not just becasue it's the latest (especially with Hi-Fi). So, I think I'll go basic and spend the remainder on books, or music, or films. Ta
I have just received my Paperwhite and am playing around with it at the moment. I'm so far impressed. My only reservations are with the lit screen. In bright light, the screen looks impeccable, but in darker conditions (and I usually read on my bed away from the window) there is noticeable shadowing in the centre of the screen. In certain lights, there are weird yellowish shadows too. I have found, by varying the light of the screen, I can minimise the distraction of the shadowing, but is this normal?I know there are widely-reported shadows on the bottom of the screen - that doesn't bother me - but should there be some unevenness on the rest of the screen?
NO there should not be. My KPW is perfect - no shading, not even in the bottom bits.Contact Amazon ASAP.

Really? I have read lots of reports about shading and some people seem to have had replacements with shading in different places.
I have just read for an hour or two and I didn't notice the shading issue at all once I was lost in the book. To be honest, I think my eyes play tricks on me the more I look for problems.
Anyone else have non-perfect screens or should I contact Amazon as Elle says?
I'm reluctant to get a replacement as it's extra hassle and I don't want there to be a worse issue in the replacement!
Mine has some slight shading at the bottom, but it's just a relic of the fact that the LEDs are discrete lights and so the illumination close to that edge cannot be totally even. But I can't say I've noticed anything on other parts of the screen.Sometimes, particularly with yellowish tints, it can be a result of the bonding process between the layers that make up the screen (this was a particular problem with the iPad 3). But that often goes away as the adhesives cure.
If it bothers you, contact Amazon to get a replacement. They're usually pretty good about that sort of thing.
Well I ended up contacting Customer Services, who were excellent. I'm getting a new replacement, so I'll be able to compare the screens before sending this kindle back. Depending on the lighting in the room, I keep having to alter the built-in light to stop me seeing this yellow bruising effect. It's probably something you forget about, but I've paid hard-earned money for this and want it as good as possible!
Update:New Kindle arrived this morning (fantastic service) and it is acceptable. I think I had too high expectations for the screen (I expected it to be like a flawless piece of white paper). There are still imperfections with the lighting of the screen (the bottom of the screen outside the reading area is a little worse than the first kindle) but the actual reading area is a lot easier on the eye and yellowy-dark shadows aren't as noticeable. I'm sure in a week or two, I'll get used to the screen and wonder what all the fuss was about. So, for now, this one's a keeper and I'll read on it for a week before giving my final verdict!
Adam wrote: "How does it compare to whatever model you were using before? I'm considering an upgrade as well and have some concerns about all the reports of shadowing."Aside from the light, it's excellent (compared to my trusty KK). Faster page turns, book cover scrolling so you can choose your next book by looking at the covers to remind you which book is which, time to read feature is very useful...
The kindle feels more solid than the KK, and it's nicer to hold. The only downside is the light which seems to vary from unit to unit. There are a lot of one and two star reviews in amazon describing the shadowing. I guess it depends on how fussy you are, but I'll report back after a week or so of reading.
The software update on the kindle touch added time to read function and book cover display. I'm happy that i stuck with it as i really like these more than i need it lit and have now got into using text to speech which i understand the paperwhite doesn't have. So for me i was better not spending the money to 'upgrade'.I'm not sure it's worth spending more to get a lit screen, i love my kindle touch.
Not sure what i'd buy now if it was my first kindle though.
My Kindle is a perfect white screen so I can't understand why people are accepting sub-par ones. And my response was to the mid-screen imperfections. It's perfectly normally (apparently and wrongly) that it is at the bottom but not over the entire screen.

It looks like you were lucky, Elle. I've read an awful lot of shadowing reports while researching my imperfect screen. I'm on my second Paperwhite. Neither has had a screen that I would call perfect and even between those two kindles, the difference in lighting is worryingly big. These devices seem to differ widely from unit to unit.
The question is whether I can read and be comfortable with my screen as it is. You're right, people shouldn't accept sub par ones, but I'm not sending kindles back and forth in the hope of a perfect screen that may never come. I'm sure I'll get used to my screen, anyhow. If not, I'll swap with yours maybe? ;)
Hope my PW screen is perfect just ordered my first kindle today. Had a kobo touch for over a year now, I picked it as kindle didn't have a touch screen and was £70 more for the keyboard version and I could pick the back colour. I've bought the PW as it sounds the same but with a light and 8 week battery and lightef, great for holidays and with Amazon offering books at 20p I think it's a good investment and I can now choose e books from any site :-)
My kindle paperwhite has a odd phenomenon where you get a slight shadow on the brighter settings depending on where the lightbulb in the room is. It's not enough to return it though because bugger archiving thousands of books again.
My PW screen has a tiny pinhead of stronger light at the lower left side corner but as it is outwith the reading area it doesn't bother me.
I hope you was not only buying the pw for the 20p books Sarah,as the Sony promotion that Amazon was price matching has stopped,so unfortunately no more 20p books.http://www.amazon.co.uk/forum/kindle/...
yeah seen that,no i find most book are cheaper on kindle than kobo so now have more choice of where i shop. my kindle came today and looks great =)
