Marie (fyeahmarie) | 135 comments I'm about to start The Office of Mercy and it will probably be the only book I read over the next couple of days so I can finish it faster. I'm very excited for this one.

Sasha Sinclair (SashaSin) | 2 comments Just finished reading A Sealed Fate, which is a great read of you are looking for something very different..certainly not a conventional thriller at all.

Been such a cold winter in NYC, so I loved th fact that ASF was set in the hot climates of Dubai and Cape Town. This certainly is a book where the author with her affirnity for place will transport you to another world. Not only will your mind be taken on a journey to physical places, but your soul will go on a journey too, as the book's theme is that age old battle between fate and freewill. The guiding theme is wrapped up in a psychological thriller which thinks out the box, never mimmicks and always surprises. The author takes us on leisurely tours of the City State's night spots and its haute cuisine; we rub shoulders with the beautiful and rich but we never travel far from that naqging question of destiny and the price you have to pay to change it. The work builds up to a tense and truly novel conclusion. All in all a cracking debut with some very good stuff going on in there.

I highly recommend it:)

Actually I read and quite enjoyed Old Magic. I actually liked the modern day portions more than the "time travel" parts but still, it was a fun story.

Some say crazy... some say lazy! I usually have about 13 going at once. But then I'm retired so I can read more than most. I usually have one or more of my past favorites in some stage of re-reading, a couple of books of poetry and short stories going (These make great reads for the executive reading room - you know the one with a roll of paper mounted to the wall) and several others so I've always got something in progress for whatever genre I'm in the mood for.

Stephen (havan) | 32 comments Perhaps after reading that you should try The House of Blue Leaves by John Guare He's the same guy that wrote Six Degrees of Separation and Four Baboons Adoring the Sun I've wanted to see House of Blue leaves for years and have seen and loved both of the others

Cherrelle Smith (spoonary) I'm currently re-reading Skulduggery Pleasant (Skulduggery Pleasant, #1) by Derek Landy . The rest of the series will follow because I want to get to the most recent release Kingdom of the Wicked (Skulduggery Pleasant, #7) by Derek Landy which I have yet to read. I'm also reading some books for uni, but they're not half as exciting as this one. I definitely recommend the series for fans of Harry Potter, as it's full of magic and is aimed at a similar audience.

message 66: by Pink (new)

Pink I just took a brief look at House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski sounds like it's had a bit of a cult following, with great reviews. Think I might have to pop it on my TBR list just for that, though not sure it would be my usual choice of book.

message 67: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 451 comments I can't wait to read that book

message 68: by Pink (new)

Pink Oh now I really want to read House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski

Today I read this book The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga I've had the book for over a year and couldn't get into it before, but finished it today. It was okay, but I didn't think amazing.

Tomorrow I plan on reading In Cold Blood by Truman Capote which I have been reading for months...but just cannot get into it, although I'm determined to finish it and move onto something new!

Henri Moreaux (henrimoreaux) | 128 comments Just finished Defiant Patriot: The Life and Exploits of Lt. Colonel Oliver L. North and am reading Tom Clancy's Patriot Games, not enjoying it much so far, 120 pages in and it's no where near as good as Without Remorse was. Am really hoping it improves, ended up taking a break from it to read Defiant Patriot - is a bit of a worry when a non-fiction biography is more enthralling than a "thriller".

Cherrelle Smith (spoonary) I'm currently reading Cinder (Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer and it's great. In essence, it is a Cinderella retelling where the girl is a cyborg mechanic. (view spoiler) Did I mention that it is set in futuristic China? I'm loving it! I just wish I had more time to sit down and read it! (generally when I'm on Goodreads, I'm procrastinating/doing uni work).

Lori Baldi I'm new to the group and I don't see many books listed here that I can comment on intelligently. I did really enjoy Defending Jacob. I found it to be surprising in many ways. The story was good. The ending was a shocker and could not be guessed at. I had not previously heard of the author. All around a good surprise.

However, I see many who are fans of the author John Hart. I must have read these reviewers a few months ago because I tried to read The King of Lies and did not find it enjoyable at all. I'm not trying to pick a fight. I'll just respectfully disagree and say that the book was not for me.

My current book is a good one but written many years ago by the great Leon Uris QB VII. Very good but takes an investment to get through the first half. I find that true, though, with most books.

message 88: by Pink (new)

Pink Lori, I think it's great that we all have different book tastes. It's nice to agree on favourite books, or authors, but equally fun to explore new genres that we wouldn't try unless recommended. Sometimes we find unexpected books we love, sometimes we hate them, but I think it's worthwhile to branch out every once on a while.

I'm finishing off The god delusion, then onto The adventures of Sherlock Holmes, which I want to read before the end of the month :)

Hi Lori... I guess that is why there are so many different writers out there.. its like pie, everyone loves their favorite and then some people prefer cake over pie. I do love this site and learning about books I might not ever have branched out and read. Like in college I had to read a book assigned to me.. It won an award and I didn't care for it.. it wasn't that good and didn't speak to me personally.
did you use the search button at the top of the main page and put in titles you have read and loved?
Personally I like it when we all do not agree, makes the discussion even better

I know the feeling... I got stuck on a book for college.. It took me two weeks to read it ... "Acck" I usually read a book in a couple of days if not the day of... but oh well there are few of the boring ones, usually I hit the mark in choosing books I will enjoy.

Oh, I definitely agree. I was a member of an in person book club before I moved to Ohio. One of the books that we read was

The Kite Runner which was not what I considered my type of book. I ended up loving that book and consider it a favorite. Sometimes we don't realize when we finish a book how much the story will end up staying with us. That book has resonated over the years.
