I was recently looking for a copy of the Audio-book The Moving Finger by Agatha Christie on you-tube since my laptop wasn't playing nicely with the internet following Hurricane Milton. I came across an audiobook version of The Second Murder at the Vicarage by Val McDermid which is apparently a short story based on the Christie classic. Two of the original's most annoying characters are dead within the first few minutes. Archer the Poacher dies of his own ineptitude after preparing a stew of poached pheasant and mushrooms (some of which were poisonous) and then Mary, the vicar's inept cook meets a well-deserved end when her head is bashed in with a cast iron omelet pan. (Executed for crimes against gastronomy?)

I'd not heard of this author and certainly hadn't heard of this short story, but so far it's great.
