Boy Goes To See Family After Mom Dies, Historical Fiction [s]

So, I read this book about five years ago, though I am almost positive it was a slightly older book. The story was that this boy, who had been living with indians, went back to see his family after his mother died. I can't remember if he knew she had died or not. His name was Jim or something, and he goes into a store and the man says to this little boy, "Oh, that's just indian Jim" (those weren't his exact wordsI believe, but it was something along those lines) The boy finds out this is his brother, who I think was named Daniel, but I could be mistaken. I do remember one scene quite clearly. His younger brother wants a braid like the boy has, and their older siblings don't approve,so the boy chops his hair off. This book was juvenile/YA fiction.
