The names of the most popular shelves are used as genres for that book. We exclude "to read" "read" "currently-reading" and so on but pretty much enything else is OK.

There is no way to change, remove, or add, these genres.

Ah ok, I can add it to my romance shelf, funny I thought I had.
You can add to more than just romance, so could be helpful to browsing readers to see "romance" but also shelves/genres/tags like "contemporary romance" "historical romance" etc.

If you click "see top shelves" under the list of genres you can see that 1 person (which happens to be you) has shelved the book as Romance - but until other people do, this will not translate to the genre list.
Ok. Well hopefully other people might. That answers my question at least:)
