The main character, Rachel, stops speaking when she hears of the death of Tommy Feathers, a classmate who died mysteriously and always had a crush on Rachel. He brought her golden raspberry pies.

I think that Rachel's class has a teacher out and no substitute, and they decide not to tell anyone.

One of the students is leaving, so they do some sort of ritual with rocks, and they say something nice about the person leaving. When it's Rachel's turn to say something, she writes on a piece of paper that she remembers the person was mean to Tommy Feathers.

That's what I remember, but I can't remember the title.
