Werner It started to snow heavily here last night, about an hour before the library closed, and the overnight low temperature was expected to be 18 degrees. And this morning, it snowed heavily again; judging by the height of the little piles of snow on the fenceposts, Barb and I estimate the accumulation to be about three inches. So, despite the official beginning of spring, we're looking out on a very white and wintry world!

message 902: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Yuck! We didn't get any snow, but went down to 19 degrees. It's been really windy, too. Just cuts through a body.

message 903: by Werner (new)

Werner Stay as warm as you can, Jim!

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We have a foot of snow here! It came down a night or so ago. Doesn't seem like spring at all!

message 905: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) A foot of snow?!!! Yuck. Well, it should be gone fairly soon. It IS spring & such things happen. We got almost 6" of snow last year early in March. It was 18 this morning here & should get into the mid 40's. After this, we're supposed to be down in the 20's at night & 30's during the day for the next week. Pretty chilly for this time of the year.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We have 19 degrees here. Is it really spring??? :)

Margaret | 75 comments All the cherry and crab apple trees blossomed three days ago. This morning we have snow flurries. In Seattle. Is there some kind of problem with the Earth's orbit that we should put together a team of mismatched but effective characters to combat? Bruce Willis? Samuel L. Jackson?

message 908: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) LOL!

message 909: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Apparently cars aren't the big thing causing climate change. This TED Talk is amazing & really scary for the changes it does show. The solution is simple, but counters the popular view now.

:) Hi, Margaret! I'd love to see all those trees in blossom! That's the beauty of spring.

Alan Savory's photos are very convincing. Hope the holistic management continues. Thanks for the link, Jim. Those TED talks are terrific.

message 912: by Werner (new)

Werner Jim, I just finished watching the video with Allan Savory that you shared the link for. That was enormously educational and eye-opening! I really hope that policy makers around the globe will take this very seriously and start listening to him.

message 913: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Those TED talks are pretty awesome. I agree, Werner.

message 914: by Werner (last edited Apr 04, 2013 02:22PM) (new)

Werner Our "spring" here has been mostly unseasonably cold, as has been the case for about the last 15 years or more. When I walked to work this afternoon, the temperature was about 35 degrees, and it was pouring rain (along with a high wind that forced me to put down my umbrella for about the last half mile :-( ). As the temperature has dropped with the approach of evening, the rain has turned to snow for the past hour, and it's been coming down thick and fast. I recall the April blizzard of 1973 in Cedar Falls, Iowa during my college days; this might turn into another one. :-(

message 915: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Yucky! It was dry & 54 here today. Tomorrow is supposed to be gorgeous & after that it gets pretty near perfect - up to 70's during the day & just down into the 50's at night. We're supposed to get some rain, too. That will really make the grass pop.

message 916: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Apr 04, 2013 06:58PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Werner and Jim, April weather is so undependable! Today we had such a nice day that I dried our laundry outside. Our grand-dog lay in the sunshine enjoying the heat on the black part of her fur. Don't give up. Sunny days are coming!

Eddie put the snow-blower away today. I hope we won't be needing it for a while. :)

message 917: by Werner (new)

Werner I won't give up hoping for spring yet, Joy! :-)

message 919: by Werner (new)

Werner Thanks for the encouraging link, Joy! That's a good song.

Our snow proved to be mostly sleet and freezing rain; the ground was white when I came home last night, but it's melted off by now, and the grass is green. This morning, Princess' water dish wasn't frozen; that's a harbinger of spring. So, Tom Waits is right! :-)

message 920: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Werner, glad to hear things are improving.
Yes, I LOVE that song! I find it very soothing and comforting.

message 921: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's 62 here now. I'm glad I have the tractor for much of the heavy lifting, but I'm still sweating.

message 922: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We have 49 degrees here right now at 5:25 PM. http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick....

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I had a nice surprise out my kitchen window today... snowbirds out on the lawn, pecking around for food. I guess they're back from the south. As you probably know, snowbirds are also known as juncos. Here are a couple of pics:

Cute little things!

message 924: by Werner (new)

Werner They are really cute, Joy! Thanks for sharing those pictures.

message 925: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments You're welcome, Werner. Do you see snowbirds like that around your neighborhood?

message 926: by Werner (new)

Werner I've never noticed any, though that doesn't mean they're not there --I've never made any special effort to birdwatch. The birds we see around here most commonly are crows, mallard ducks, pigeons (mostly in Bluefield WV) and wrens or sparrows, with robins, cardinals (our state bird) and blue jays also being sighted fairly often, and vultures occasionally. Once I saw a bird I believe was a goldfinch on the college campus, and I believe we have owls though I've never seen any. There are wild turkeys in the general area, and people hunt them, but they stay out of the populated areas. That's about the limit of my birding knowledge, but more avid bird watchers around here could doubtless give you a much more complete list!

message 927: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Werner, we see most of the birds you see. (I haven't seen a vulture but they're probably in the Adirondacks somewhere.)

We used to see lots of goldfinches and black-capped chickadees during the warmer seasons at our feeder when I was putting out seeds for them. We still get hummingbirds during the summer. They like our flowers on our deck.

We see occasional bluebirds in season. They are so lovely! If we're lucky they nest in our bluebird house.

Once I saw an indigo bunting on our deck. They are a such a bright shade of bluish-purple! Even more beautiful than the bluebirds. Here's a pic: http://www.google.com/imgres?start=23...

message 928: by Werner (new)

Werner Really good picture, Joy; they are beautiful!

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim wrote: "Brrr! 31 this morning!"

As Nina says: "Crazy weather!" I heard on the radio today that we'll soon have a night below freezing. The temps have been in the 50s and higher lately. The milder temps really are welcome at this point!

I'm already taking an inventory of my warm weather clothing. I tend to forget what I have in my wardrobe. I'm making discoveries as I go through my closets! :)

message 931: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Typical spring - always bounces around.

message 932: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's supposed to go down to 24 F here tonight.

message 933: by Werner (new)

Werner We got a significant snowfall one morning last month; but today we woke up to our first really heavy snowfall, with every part of the ground completely buried. I'd estimate the accumulation on top of the fence posts to be 2-3 inches at least, and it's still coming down heavily. According to our thermometer on the (open) front porch, it's no more than 30 degrees out there (and it's overcast, which will limit the sun's warming power); so this snow may lay for awhile. (Luckily, I don't have to work, and the grandkids don't have school; we're off until Monday for Thanksgiving. Yay!)

message 934: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Ah, Werner, a snowday! A snow-weekend! "Snowday" was always a wonderful word when we knew we could stay home, cozy and warm, and enjoy the snowfall. Hope you will enjoy it too.

Here in Glens Falls we had some snow but it turned to rain. However, they are predicting that the worst part of the snowstorm will go north of us in the Adirondacks. I'm so glad we escaped the storm. It's such a hardship when the driveway has to be cleared and the driving is hazardous.

message 935: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Yuck! Good luck, Werner. We had a drippy day yesterday that turned into 1/2" of snow last night & are still getting some flurries. No accumulation here, though.

Most folks around here were just at or above freezing so got none, but we're 400 or more feet higher, so are a bit colder. It was 29 when I got up this morning & it usually gets a bit colder in the next couple of hours before dawn. (I leave the house before 5 & this time of year it doesn't get light until about 7am.)

message 936: by Werner (new)

Werner Glad too that you folks escaped the storm, Joy! And Jim, stay as warm and dry as you can.

message 937: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We had over a foot of snow last night! Ed says it looks like it's at least 18 inches! During the night, I kept sweeping a small area in the backyard for our little dog. The snow was hard to keep up with.

Now we have to find someone to snowblow our driveway. Ed's not up to it lately. If we don't clear the driveway, mail and package deliveries won't get through to us. At least we don't have to go to work!

message 938: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Ugh! That's a lot of snow. We're cold again today, started in the upper 20's with a very cold wind so it's freezing up the slop again. Feeding this morning was miserable, although the animals like it better since it is dry.

message 939: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Dec 15, 2013 10:05AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, are you sure you're not in Michigan? :) I thought Kentucky was warm. :)

message 940: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We seem to be in... I don't know. Never got above freezing after hitting the 40's yesterday. Typical of the weather around here. Blows in from all over & leaves as quickly.

message 941: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It doesn't look like the snow will leave quickly this time! Looks like almost a foot and a half of snow out there. We finally got someone to snowblow our driveway. Thank goodness because now we can get our usual mail deliveries. I look forward to receiving Christmas cards and the all packages I order. I do a lot of ordering on the Internet now since I get free shipping with Amazon Prime. Saves on gas too because I don't have go shopping as much.

message 942: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Dec 17, 2013 05:27AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's below zero here. Our thermometer showed -8 degrees F at around 7AM. At our airport it's showing -17F.
OUR WEATHER REPORT: http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick....
About 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected.

message 943: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We were supposed to have a warm, sunny day today. Instead, it was cloudy & hovered around freezing all day.

message 944: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, Hug your dog and read a book and don't venture outside unless you have to. Enjoy your warm abode.

message 945: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Don't worry, Nina. I hate going out in the cold! I'll only do it to sweep snow away to make a space for Romeo... or to put up one of my favorite outdoor decorations. :) Ed does the shopping most of the time.

message 946: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Recommendation for Jim and Jackie and Werner; maybe Joy, but not sure. I am into Steven King's, "11/22/63. I forgot what an excellent writer he was/is. Fascinating concept and I usually don't like time travel. Try it, you might like it. To be read on a cold winter's night. Maybe. This morning I took out a VCR. Does anyone of you remember what they are? It was given to me years ago by a daughter; "Mannheim Steamrollers Christmas Concert," and read the book while listening to this. Do any of you know of Mann...? Merry Christmas. from nina

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Merry Christmas, Nina!
I haven't read Stephen King's 11/22/63. I'll look into it. Is it scary?

message 948: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) You didn't get a recommendation for anything by Stephen King from me. I quit liking his writing years ago. He started out wordy & then really got bad. The last book of his I read was also the shortest, The Colorado Kid. It was also the only HCC book I gave 1 star. It was pointless & rambling.

message 949: by Werner (new)

Werner Nina, I'm not an avid Stephen King fan either, but I'll keep this one in mind! (I've seen it on sale, and run across some mentions of it here on Goodreads before.)

message 950: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, I was going to ask: "What's HCC?" But now I realize it means: "Hard Case Crime". (Original title was "The Colorado Kid (Hard Case Crime #13)".

I've submitted a suggestion that they might list the acronym at:
