Demetra The Hunger Games Trilogy Boxset
There was absolutely no religion in this book or in the entire series. Usually faith comes in during hard times and I thought it was pretty interesting to read and see the characters not making any reference to anything of higher existence or supernatural. Any thoughts?

Sarah I thought the same thing! I was like 'Stop your crying and pray!' I'm sure it would be better if they did.

Connie I didn't find it unusual; I have read other books (individual and series) that don't have any references to religion of any sort. It does not take away from the story, and I don't think that having it would add anything.

Books, to me, are to be enjoyed at face value.

I definitely think Religion isn't heard of in Panem. I can't see a Totalitarian government being okay with Districts worshipping anything but themselves. I also agree with Anna in that its probably faded away in the future.

Erica Most books that aren't specifically meant to be religious will only bring in clergymen and bibles for weddings and funerals. I don't think there were any funerals...unless you count Rue's death. Does anybody remember who conducted the wedding ceremony in book three? Wasn't it some government official?

Anna wrote: "I think it was a smart think on Susanne Collin's part because let's think about this this story is based WAY in the future so I'm guessing she was thinking that any type of religion had faded away ..."

i agree with both of you it is in the future and the religion probably did fade just like latin did

Jennifer I read it as basically, everything in the Districts is hopeless, especially for Katniss. Religion gives people hope. IF there is a religion, Katniss is not the kind of person to turn to it, and even ignore it completely.

Kelseyc Considering it's in a dystopian society I wasn't surprised. By then they had probably wiped religion from the map.

Cara I think it was a little odd, but there really isn't any room for it in the plot, if you think about it. And I agree with Jennifer: Religion gives you hope, and one thing the Capitol discourages is hope-unless they can destroy it (the Ultimate Hope trailer!). Plus, Hunger Games was written to make a statement about murders/war/'reality' TV. There isn't anywhere that religion fits in that picture.

Erin I think it was a smart move to have no religion in this book. Like Cara said, it focused on other apsects of human nature, rather than focusing upon the spiritual aspect. I think this enhanced both the charatcers and the general feeling of hopelessness for the characters; would their despair have been as believable if they decided to pray? I think not.

There may not have been religion because is set far into the future. This could suggest that people might not need religion when your being told what to do my an authority

Vee Gretzinger i'm glad. i hate when they add religion into books. it makes everything way to controversial. sorry, but it would have totally ruined the book for a lot of people.
