Welcome: A Guide for New Members

Calling these "rules" sounds a bit harsh, so think of them as general guidelines, or a list of "Please don't do these."
1. No explicit content or language. For the sake of some of our younger members, we try to keep the group PG-13. An occasional swear word here or there is acceptable, but try to avoid excessive cursing (these posts may be deleted without notice).
2. Keep it civil. It's ok to have an opinion - you're more than welcome to share it in any of our discussion threads. Tell us why you could not stand the Twilight or why you can't stop ranting about The Mortal Instruments series. Chances are, at least one other member won't agree with you. You can discuss your varying opinions, but avoid getting heated. There's a time and a place for that, and it isn't here.
3. Hide all spoilers. No one likes to accidentally stumble across a spoiler. Fortunately, Goodreads has created a feature to avoid this called "hiding a spoiler". If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, there are instructions in Post 4 of this thread.
4. No promotions. To avoid the group becoming cluttered with advertisements from authors, publishers, etc., we ask for no self-promotion or promotion on behalf of a friend, relative, or colleague. Any posts to this effect will be deleted.
5. Stay active. Every moderator's nightmare is a group with a large number of members, only a fraction of which regularly post. For many members (myself included), it's challenging to log on daily. But it's important to stay up to date with what's happening in the group (the Goodreads app can come in handy). Even spending 5 minutes a week to type a post would make a huge difference.
6. Get involved! I can't stress how important this is. Monthly Reads aren't very fun when only one person participates and they are forced to carry on a discussion with themselves. So sign up for a challenge, join a round of Members vs. Mods, become involved!
When and How Do I Start a New Discussion Thread?
We welcome any and all relevant discussion topics. Before creating a topic, please use the search feature to ensure that a similar thread does not already exist. There are two ways to search for a thread:1 - Use the search function on the group homepage to search for a relevant term. Narrow down your results by toggling between searching all posts or searching only thread topics.
2- Click on the "Discussion" tab in the upper righthand corner to see additional topics. Only the first 6 topics in a folder will appear on the group homepage, so older threads may be hidden.
Creating a New Thread
• If you cannot find a thread devoted to the topic of interest to you, create a new one. You can do so by clicking on the "new" link at the top right of the Discussion Board.
• Give your new topic a name - something that will indicate to other group members, at a glance, what it contains - and assign it to the appropriate folder. If you are unsure of where to place it, leave this field blank and a moderator will file the thread appropriately. Use the "This topic is about" feature if your thread addresses a specific title or author.
• Post your comment!
Remember that a new discussion thread is only needed if one does not already exist.
What are Spoilers?
How to Hide Spoilers
Please mark all spoilers that you post in the group. If you are unsure whether something is a spoiler, err on the side of caution and mark it as such.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>To hide a spoiler using HTML:

Hi everyone, and thank you for joining The Page Turners, which is often abbreviated to TPT. The Page Turners was founded back in January of 2013 by Kathy (a current moderator) and myself. We wanted to create an online area for readers to discuss a wide variety of literature with others who shared similar interests, but had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. A somewhat joking proposition turned into something much larger than either of us could have imagined. We've spent more than a handful of late nights, sitting at our computers and wondering how we could word that next post or thinking up a new challenge.
We started off with a whopping 6 members (if any of you are reading this, kudos) and had a total of 2 threads. We averaged about 1 post a day, and there was minimal back and forth discussion. Today, with nearly 2,000 members, the group has evolved into a series of challenges, group reads, and member-driven discussions. Without the continued support of our members, none of this would have been possible. As the community grew, we gradually introduced new components of the group, until we arrived at what you see before you.
I wanted to welcome all of our new members, on behalf of all of our moderators. Hopefully, you'll find The Page Turners to be a friendly and welcoming environment, meet some amazing new people, chat about your favorite (and least favorite) books, and enjoy your time here.
We've come so far over the years, and hope to move even further in the years to come. That being said, I think it's time to start turning some pages!
