Book: Third Grave Dead Ahead - Darynda Jones
Completed: 02/17

Review: I really like this series. Charley is funny and annoying - Reyes is just a hot mess - but for some reason, I just devour these books. I'm not sure if I like those two together, but it's not like I have a say in the matter. Looking forward to getting my hands on the next one.

Spark (Elemental, #2) by Brigid Kemmerer
Title: Spark by Brigid Kemmerer
Date Completed: February 23, 2013
Rating: 3.5-stars
Review: 3.5 stars- I liked this one much better than the first in the series. Gabriel seemed like he had a few more layers than Chris and Layne was also more sympathetic than Becca, who really got on my nerves at times in the last book. I still think the main worldbuilding of the story needs more work, because the shadowy-mysterious Guardians just aren't keeping my interest. The "bad" guys also need a little something more because the high school bully scene is getting old and black and white with all of the cliches. It may be awhile before I get next book, but I'll keep going with the series to see if we can finally learn a little more about this world other than the Merrick's backyard.

Blameless (Parasol Protectorate, #3) by Gail Carriger
Book: Blameless by Gail Carriger
Date completed: Feb 23, 13
Rating ★★★★★
Review: This was my favorite book of this series. I feel like it's gotten funnier and wittier with each book. I love Alexia as a heroine, how refreshing to have someone so sensible and none of the whining that drives me crazy in many other books. Even when she's emotional she's not annoying. :) After reading this one completing this series had moved higher up my tbr list.

Tall, Dark & Hungry (Argeneau, #4) by Lynsay Sands
Finished 2/23
4★

This installment of the Argeneau series is Bastien and Terri's story and it was very entertaining. My favorite thing about this series is the humor and the hysterical dynamics of the Argeneau family. Bastien and Terri, Kate's cousin, are thrown together while helping Lucern and Kate plan their wedding. After facing many obstacles in the wedding planning process, Terri proves to be a perfect match for Bastien and it was fun to watch their romance evolve. I loved Vincent, an Argeneau cousin, and all of his antics. I can't wait to see what he gets into in his story in the next book.

Sherri | 781 comments The Moonstone and Miss Jones (Paranormal Investigator, #2) by Jillian Stone

The Moonstone and Miss Jones by Jillian Stone
Book Completed: 23 February 2013
Rating: ★★½

Have you ever had a series that you just were not sure about; well I feel that way about this one (Paranormal Investigator). I enjoyed the paranormal, steampunk and historical aspects of the book but have a hard time with the offbeat dialogue; I always have issues when a man refers to his “appendage” as “The Duke,” and wanting to “stick” the Duke into women all the time. Sigh.

Beside that issue, I enjoyed the supporting cast of characters; which is varied with their own secretes and exotic characteristics. The introduction of the Nightshades added depth to the storyline and set up some interesting future plots. I was happy to see that Phaeton and America’s relationship began to deepen and Phaeton slowly began to give up his philandering and rakish ways and begin to make a commitment to America and their “pea in the pod” (yep, their baby was continually referred to as that). The ending is a cliffhanger and although I would like to follow the storyline, I’m not quite sure about continuing the series. Some readers will enjoy the offbeat humor and sexual innuendo; it was just not a good fit for me.

Review: Well, there was good and bad with this one. I think it could have been much better if the author had taken some time to finesse the scenes and get more out of her characters. Most of the time I felt like we were being taken from point A to point B with a clinical kind of writing. So while the plot and characters weren't terrible I still wanted more, especially in regard to some kind of change in Remy. I do want to end on a good note, though, because for the most part I liked this one. I liked the different slices of what became of different survivors (although any zombie fan worth their salt has seen that same before, so it wasn't exactly new ground) and I liked Remy's no nonsense attitude and her bits of dialogue were fun to read. I'll probably read the next one, but even with the cliffhanger ending it still stands on its own just fine.

Changeling (Otherworld / Sisters of the Moon #2) by Yasmine Galenorn
Finished 2/28
4★

Changeling is told from Delilah, the were-cat and middle D'Artigo sister's point of view. She is approached by Zachary, werepuma of the Rainier Puma Pride, to help investigate who is killing members of his pack. The plot weaves together mystery, action and romance for an entertaining read. I enjoyed the development of Delilah's character and her reactions to discoveries she made about herself during the course of the book. My only complaint is that the first couple of books in this series seemed to have a slow start and then pick up the pace about a quarter of the way and draw me in. I look forward to reading more about the sisters and Menolly's point of view in the next book, Darkling.

Book: No Place to Run - Maya Banks

Review: This is the 2nd book in the KGI series. A group of brothers with military backgrounds run a group of mercenary-type men who do secret missions when the government cannot. In this book, Sam has a fling with a waitress while on a mission in Mexico. She shows up at his house pregnant and shot 5 months after. Danger happens, love happens, violence and gunplay happen, danger resolved, happily ever after.

Review: I want to start by saying how much I adored the first two books in thia trilogy...LOVED. This one not so much. Not at the beginning anyway. I just wasn't captivated for about the first half of this book. But the second half more than made up for it and I was willing to forgive enough to still 5 star it. I like my endings to be wrapped up in neat little bows, and while there were a couple loose ends they were only minor side ones. Overall I still loved the book and loved the whole trilogy. I woyld recommend it to anyone looking for light paranormal romance and I will definitely be reading anything else this author comes out with. I actually really enjoy her style of writing, it keeps me interested even when not much is going on.

Sherri | 781 comments Three Sisters (Blackberry Island, #2) by Susan Mallery

Three Sisters by Susan Mallery
Book Completed: 02March 2013
Rating: ★★★★½
Review: The only reason I didn’t give Three Sisters 5 stars is that it started out a bit slow for me and I had to push myself to continue reading. However, once the story unfolded and began to take shape, I greedily continued to read.

Three Sisters is in reference to three Victorian houses that occupy a small cul-de-sac on Blackberry Island. However, it also refers to the three uniquely individual women that own them and the friendship that develops amongst them.

Andi is a woman jilted at the alter; when her fiancé of ten years stands her up on their wedding day. She impetuously decides to move Blackberry and remodel one of the three sisters (homes) while getting over her fiance’s betrayal. Her arrival brings Deanna, an OCD Stepford wife and Boston, an artist struggling to come to terms with the death of her infant, together. These three unlikely women build a friendship on their imperfections which helps them resolve the issues that threaten to destroy their happiness.

Three Sisters is a journey to discovering friendships and working out relationship issues that we all think are unique to each of us; but really are what unites us. It had me crying at times, especially with Boston and Deanna, since their issues are so heart wrenching. I loved this book and am really hoping that Susan Mallery plans another novel in this series.

Blue Diablo (Corine Solomon, #1) by Ann Aguirre
Title: Blue Diablo by Ann Aguirre
Date Completed: March 8
Rating: 3.5-stars
Review: 3.5-stars- A promising start that slowed down midway, redeemed itself again toward the end, but then dragged onto a somewhat unsatisfying ending. I've had this one sitting on my shelves for awhile now, but since the last book in the series just came out I was looking forward to starting a series I could finish right away if I wanted to. After finishing, the relationship between Corine has promise, but is also full of too much yes/no, back/forth that it's dizzying trying to keep up with where Corine is at any given moment. Looking past the relationship aspect of the book there is interesting world building and a different paranormal world that I would like to learn more about. The mystery surrounding Corine's mother and father is another juicy tidbit that the author successfully dangled in front of me and will probably lead me to read the next in the series. I'd like to warm-up to the characters more in the next book, because it just wasn't quite there for me in this one. I'll continue soon, but I'm not jumping on to the next book like I thought I would be.

Amanda A | 812 comments Week 6
Under Wraps (Underworld Detection Agency, #1) by Hannah Jayne
Finished 3/9
3½★

Under Wraps is a lighter urban fantasy, but still an enjoyable read. Sophie Lawson is the only human that works for the Underworld Detection Agency. She gets pulled into an investigation of murders in the San Francisco area where she is paired with detective Parker Hayes. I liked Sophie's character and the tension between her and Parker. However, the Sophie pictured on the cover is not how I thought of her. She is not a tough girl character in this book. A cast of quirky secondary characters and the author's witty dialogue kept the book entertaining. There is a cliffhanger of sorts where Sophie is about to find out about her heritage at the very end. I will continue with the series and look forward to learning more about Sophie.

Book: Tricked by Kevin Hearne
Date completed: 3/9

Review: I had put off reading this book because Coyote wasn't a character that interested me much and I knew he played a big part in this installment. How lucky for me that it was still thoroughly entertaining. I found this book a little slower/harder to get into than the others in the series. And oh how I love Oberon. The talking, scene-stealing dog. He always makes me laugh out loud. :-)

Week 6 – Orange Cover
Mercy Burns (Myth and Magic, #2) by Keri Arthur

Mercy Burns by Keri Arthur
Book Completed: 09 March 2013
Rating: ★★★½

Keri Arthur has been one of my favorite authors since I discover her Riley Jensen series. Mercy Burns is the second installment in her Myth and Magic series. This book is a good solid read and I loved the lure of the dragons. The traditions and world building for their culture was unique and interesting. The schism between the dragon council and the cliques was well done and a main plotline for the story; I wonder if Ms. Arthur has any plans to carry that forward??

Anyway, Mercy Reynolds is an investigative reporter and is tracking down the death of her best friend’s sister. She gets caught up in the intrigue and is kidnapped and thrown into a cell where another victim is being held. He is known as “muerte” and is intriguing as he is sexy. Together, they have to overcome each of their prejudices and work together to resolve a mystery that could destroy the dragons.

Damon “muerte” Rey stole the book for me. He made no apologies for what he was: an assassin sent by the council to investigate the mysterious goings on, and I loved him for it. He is the quiet strong type and balanced Mercy well. Overall, a solid read from a series I would continue.
