Will Byrnes I like the list, although there are a bunch I believe do not belong. Still, I come in at 57. There are a few I had not heard of, so live and learn, Cold Comfort Farm, A Suitable Boy, a few others. Do they really think that Irving's A Prayer For Owen Meany is better than Cider House Rules?

Abigail (42stitches) | 360 comments I was telling my husband about this and he mentioned he probably hadn't read six of them (I guess he has read at least six but he won't take the time to look at the list and tell me). He sort of has an excuse as he didn't attend highschool (home study) and he prefers non fiction and philosophy. But still, six does seem a little low. A lot of these books are ones kids are forced to read for school.

Cold Comfort Farm is pretty good btw.

My husband was homeschooled, too. I wonder how many he's read... He's for sure read 1, 2, 4, 6, 16, 25, 33, 40, and 52. That's still 9. Not bad. I think he's read Alice in Wonderland, also. So 10. A LOT of the ones I'd read were for school.

I've heard good things about Cold Comfort Farm. If I didn't mark it, it's because I have no idea what it's about. Heehee... :) I'm adding that one to my list.

It just floors me that I made it through high school and an English degree, yet I have still not read Catcher In The Rye or Moby Dick. I cannot believe that most people would have only read six on the list as there are close to that in children's books which I have read many times.

Irene Hollimon | 92 comments Watership Down saved me- with that one I got to six that I have read.
Now there's a whole bunch on there I started and never finished. I read one and a half Harry Potter so I guess that doesn't count if you have to have read three of them.

I've read 47. Nearly half so not bad going. I can believe that the majority of people have only read 6 thought. The amount of friends I have that never read is quite a few. It always amazes me that people don't read. Their loss is all I can say!!!

Christina (chris227) | 75 comments I've read about 20 but have at least another 10 in my TBR pile now. I'm really surprised the average is only 6. Aren't a lot of these required reading for english classes?

Total Read : 30
Total to be read: 33

I can easily find at least 10 books on this list that no person should go through life without having read, and I'm sure that the vast majority don't. 6 is a completely ridiculous estimate!

Veronica (veronicay) I've read at least 46 of them, but what does that prove? It seems an eclectic mixture of classics, middle-of-the-road stuff and rubbish (Dan Brown, I'm looking at you, but I also think my life is none the poorer for not having read Enid Blyton's Faraway Tree -- well maybe I did aged 5, who knows?)

My total is 20, but that is counting the entire Harry Potter series and the Lord of the Rings trilogy as only one each.

So I guess that leaves a lot of room for improvement. What is the source for this list?

I have to admit that most of the ones I have read were read when I was in school, or as a child by my parents, but I have read them, so I guess they count. I have not read the bible chronologically, but being raised in Catholic High School, and having attempted to read it chronologically a few times, I feel safe checking that one off the list as read.

A good number of the ones on my TBR list are included in my Summer Challenge list too, so I should change that ratio pretty quickly this summer!

I agree with the others, some of these I've never even heard of and others I have no desire to read ever. It was interesting to have a look at the list though and see how I fared.

Felina I think this might be off. I've read 17 of these books and while I was a HUGE reader in middle school I slowed down in highschool and aside from the Harry Potter books, completely stopped in college. I just started reading seriously again at the beginning of the year and I've read 17 of these books. They should check their numbers again.

Boo! I've only read 19. I didn't count my TBR's, but I have many of these on my shelves and I plan on reading most of these at some point. I don't about the absolute integrity of this list, but some of the choices are very good.

Also, I read several of these in high school, but don't remember them, so I didn't count them.
