Alexander Armstrong, an awkward 17 year old with a penchant for the romantic and dream of going 'off world', decides, in a fit of teenage pique, to join the United Nations Off-World Legion. He is eventually sent to the colony of Samsara 20 light years from Earth. A dumping ground for UN refugees, adventurers, and every criminal organization in creation, there thousands of humans and refugees from Gliesium eke out a living on the frozen muskeg and in the craggy valleys of the Seleucus Vallis and Serberor Campus. Surrounded by the worst villains of the Hindu Kush, Armstrong, who becomes know as 'Sikunder', must prove his mettle as he fights tears and terror while battling pirates and the murderous Tong gang known as the Black Hand. Through it all, as he combats the cold and loneliness of his mistakenly chosen profession, one man will be his muse and the creature driving him forward with his boot - Subedar Angus Motshwega, a Capetown Zulu raised by a Scottish minister who is better known in the Legion as MacShaka the Tartan Zulu.
