Honestly, I found Three Dark Crowns to be a disappointing read. I just felt like the writing was predictable, and the writing was really juvenile (in my opinion). I couldn't finish the book.

I dont want to put you off though, so give it a go and tell me what you think! :-)

dont get me wrong, the whole premise and idea of the book is really good! I just kind of lost the interest halfway through (i guess the characters really annoyed me)

message 205: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 15 comments I can understand that. The first book was actually my least favorite but the sequel was amazing and it’s now one of my favorite series!

message 206: by Nikita (new)

Nikita Caraval this is a good series with twists, mystery and fun

Seconding Caraval (Caraval, #1) by Stephanie Garber and Legendary (Caraval, #2) by Stephanie Garber . Twists and turns and beautifully written with distinctly different characters that evolve.

message 208: by Leah (new)

Leah | 1 comments I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this one but The Last Namsara (Iskari, #1) by Kristen Ciccarelli is excellent. I haven't read the second one yet, The Caged Queen (Iskari, #2) by Kristen Ciccarelli but I have it. They have dragons!

Jenna Obremski | 48 comments I have accumulated a VERY long list of books to read after KoA. Immediately after I plan to read Give the Dark My Love and Phoenix Unbound.

Elisabeth (pdcdirectorlibrary) | 14 comments Have to add Wrath and the Dawn to the list, very beautiful story! Isle of Blood and Stone was also a good read.
Rebel of the Sands series is another recommendation.
Scarlet by A.C. Gaughen

Jennifer Lopez | 8 comments I’ve seen lady midnight and I do want to read it because it seems interesting. However I don’t know if I have to read the immortal instruments series and the clockwork angle series before I read lady midnight. Can any one who has read the series let me know if I have to read anything? (I’m asking this because they are set in the same universe)

message 217: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 21 comments The three separate series are not based on each other, so it is fine to read Lady Midnight without having read the others. BUT there are spoilers across the three series. If you plan on reading all of the shadowhunter universe, I would recommend first reading the three first books of The Mortal Instruments, then reading The Infernal Devices, then finish TMI, and THEN read Lady Midnight 😅

It's all one universe and a fun one that is split into different series but really they are all connected. Chronically it's first the Infernal Devices (Clockwork) and then the Mortal Instruments (City), followed by the Dark Artifices (Lady). You can read Mortal first because it was released first and then Infernal. But don't read Dark Artifices until you've read both Infernal and Mortal.

Have fun. Enjoy the series.

ash | (sffreads) | 1 comments I have gone through all five pages and added all of the books I didn't have on my radar yet. I honestly didn't read any SjM books until I started my bookstagram over the summer because she wasn't on my radar -- not sure how but I didn't really hear of her books before [bookstagram made me read it] and I binged on every acotar book [with the exception of acofas] and tog book from August 2018 to finishing up KoA a few weeks ago. I feel LOST. I have never wanted to re-read a series before until I found Sarah's books. I completely agree with everyone else-- her books are life changing. The bar is raised immensely high. Her characters feel like family.

With this said, The Iron King series helped me out of my acotar hangover [although I didn't care for the final book.] I saw the Red Rising series mentioned a few times-- and since it's in my top 3 favorite series of all time, I must recommend it. I have Air Awakens on my kindle somehow and I never knew what it was about... but it seems to be recommended a few times so I will bump this up on my list! An Ember in the Ashes is one of the next books I'm super excited to read! I read Cinder but didn't read further so definitely going to be finishing that series now! I've also only read City of Bones so I have allllll of those books to look forward to!

Thanks for the recommendations!

Let me know how Air Awakens is! It's been on my TBR forever but it's a book I can't seem to find anywhere.

I'm currently (finally) reading Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale and will be reading Ironside after that. My TBR is disturbingly large and getting bigger everyday. That being said, I think I'll reread ACOTAR again next :)

After I am done with Kingdom of Ash and the ACOTAR series, I will read the An Ember in the Ashes series by Sabaa Tahir, the Carve the Mark duology, King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo and Superman: Dawnbreaker by Matt de la Pena

Julian Adorney | 6 comments Polly wrote: "Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson

I love both series! And I can see why you'd put them together with ToG and ACOTAR--to me, ToG started off a fairly small-scale / personal fantasy romance story, but then it really made the leap into epic fantasy in HoF :)

Have you read the Wax and Wayne Mistborn series?

Julian Adorney | 6 comments Andrea wrote: "I totally agree with it being hard to find «good enough» books after TOG and especially ACOTAR for me. I can’t see how anyone could make me love someone as much as I love those characters. As well ..."

This was incredibly helpful, thanks :)

I'm going to check out The Kiss of Deception--I'm a sucker for a good romance, and assassins/princes sound fun! Plus Mary Pearson's bio sounds fantastic!

What's your favorite Sarah Maas book?

yes! I love Marissa Meyer as well!!

message 228: by Feyre✧・゚: (new)

Feyre✧・゚: (illyrianfemale) | 8 comments I really enjoyed the Divergent series by Veronica Roth, the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard, the Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini, Scavenge the Stars by Tara Sim (and I hope to read more from Tara), The Lunar Chronicles, Heartless, and the Renegades Series by Marissa Meyer, Crown of Feathers by Nicki Pau Preto, Storm Siren from Mary Weber (and I also hope to read more form her), the Worldwalker series from Josephine Angelini (I really want to read more of Josephine's books... see her website for an awesome free novella called Lucitopia), All the Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace, Caraval by Stephanie Garber, and I heard good reviews about Bone Crier's Moon by Katherine Purdie and other books by her, Legend and the Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu, and the Folk of the Air series by Holly Black.

message 229: by katherine (new)

katherine (an_everyday_penguin) | 13 comments why is there no crescent city topic in this folder.

ok anyway, i fully agree with folk of the air by holly black because i absolutely love it. also the infernal devices and the last hours by cassandra clare are amazing ((not as much a fan of any of her other series for some reason)). also the beautiful by renee ahdieh was great and there's supposed to be a second book, so i highly recommend that as well

message 230: by Katharine (new)

Katharine Lewis If you are suffering from a SJ Maas hangover I would highly recommend:

The Valiant By Lesley Livingston (Book 1 of 3) - Celtic Princess is captured and forced to become a female gladiator in Rome - great heroine, lots of strong female characters, super unique setting!

The Winner's Curse By Marie Rutkoski (Book 1 of 3) - General's daughter wants to choose her own fate living in a world with a split caste system where the previous upper class has become the slaves to the new upper class. She impulse buys a broody slave and they fall in love. There is a really good dynamic between the two, amazing fight scenes, political intrigue and the main heroine has all of the spunk that Mass puts into hers.

Both of these are criminally underrated, recommended for fans of Sarah J Maas and all around really good fantasy stories!

Eli Hinze (elihinze) | 3 comments I have so many books to add to my to-read list now. >.>

Definitely seconding the Mistborn series! It's a trilogy, the world-building is epic in scale, the plot twists are mind-bending, and the characters are thoroughly hardcore.

I have to second Six of Crows (I recently finished the first in the Grisha series also, and am aching to get my hands on the second copy) and the Air Awakens series.

Though I enjoyed The Mortal Instruments, my favorite of Clare's works is definitely The Infernal Devices. I feel like it captures the engrossing romance of ToG and ACoTaR better.

message 232: by Sofia (new)

Sofia (sofloaf) To recover from a ToG hangover, The Naming by Alison Croggon is excellent. Other good books are The Gilded Wolves, The Merciful Crow, The Golden Compass, and An Ember in the Ashes.

Cece ❀Rants, Raves &Reviews❀ | 6 comments honestly this page is saving my life rn, I just finished CC and its so hard after finishing a Maas book bc not a lot compares to the plot twists and hilarious characters that she creates

message 234: by Brindley (new)

Brindley Gable (booksbybrin) I read Cruel Prince after finishing ACOTAR. It definitely helped with my book hangover and inspired me to start reading ToG (I’m on QoS)!

message 235: by keyareads (new)

keyareads | 1 comments If you liked the TOG series then I’d definitely recommend “Rules of Redemption” by T. A. White. The MC gives off Celaena/Aelin vibes. May not seem like it at first, but trust me, you won’t regret it.

message 236: by Das Parfum (new)

Das Parfum (goldryn) | 21 comments My top 4 recs after reading ALL SJM books are:

The Dustlands Trilogy (Blood Red Road)- Moira Young
This is the perfect series for violence, smouldering romance and intrigue... MUST. READ.

Chaos Walking (The Knife of Never Letting Go)- Patrick Ness
*who else is SUPER excited for movie adaptation?*
This has a bRiLlIaNt story line. Complex world building, lil bit of the *my planet has two moons* stupidity... But I still love you. Sweet and captivating romance. I MUST STATE: BOOK NOT REVOLVING AROUND ROMANCE. BOOK REVOLVING AROUND KILLING SOMEONE WHO REALLY, REALLY, REALLY DESERVES IT AND SACRIFICE FOR THOSE YOU LOVE.

The Ingo Chronicles- Helen Dunmore
This is labelled 9+. Do not let that sway you. It is in NO WAY a children's book. Mystery, plot, younger characters you can ACTUALLY identify with, and that spicy, spicy tween angst-y 'I don't fit in with anyone' theme that works. I promise that you will be like, 'Girl, you don't for in with anyone because you. are. legit. EPIC. and. a. mix. of. EVERYTHING.'

The Selection Series- Kiera Cass
Oh, Fluff. If you could be a book, you would be The Selection.
The Selection is the living embodiment of our favourite friend and, who is that you ask? Ah, Fluff. Welcome to your new home. Obviously there is an actual plot or I wouldn't have been SO OBSESSED WITH THIS DYSTOPIAN STYLE BACHELOR.
(They should totally adapt that... The Bachelor: Dystopia Special.)
Royals, romance, rebellion. The three Rs:
On the R Scale, The Selection:
Royals: ✔ The Schreave family. Duh.
Romance: ✔ Maxerica, Amspen, Luspen, etcetera, etcetera
Rebellion: ✔ You blind? We got the Southern Rebels, the Northern Rebels, AMERICA.
Moving swiftly on...

In conclusion we have action, suspense, mystery and floofy flofty fluff.
READ ALL OF THEM AND YOU HAVE ALL SARAH J MAAS BOOKS EVER: bOoMiTyBaNgBaNgSlApSlAsH

I just realised how shouty I seem... I am apologising to your eyes and ears.
