When is enough... enough?

I certainly don't object to sex scenes in a book, but I don't want them to overcome the plot. There should be a reason for the scene being there, not just, "Oh, I'm up to page 65, there's better be some sex now." I think what's true for sex scenes should be true for all scenes included. In some way they should advance the plot or reveal something about a character. I don't care much for erotic romance (tried some), and I dislike menage (also tried reading that). I also really dislike sex scenes and battle scenes that go on for pages and pages. I've been known to skip/skim them completely. But then, I'm old, and YMMV.
