This was a fantasy picture book with a curly brown haired princess in a blue dress who was unhappy with her life and wanted to explore her world. She got a wish for whatever she wanted on her birthday and she would always wish to get out of the castle and explore and each time her family would board up one of her windows to keep her shut in. A large lion would appear every birthday and shatter the windows and try to get her to escape. She eventually does escape to live free and travel with the lion.

Any help would be appreciated:) Also I read this back in the early 90s not sure of the actual publish date.
