The Dead Zone
question
What's the first book you ever read - not including some learn to read books.

For me it was, 'The Dead Zone' by Stephen King.
At the time in the early 80's when I started reading novels, reading Stephen King's books were what, 'cool kids did'.
So I guess I stumbled onto reading by trying to be like all the rest of my peers; glad it happened though :)

I was 6 - Black Beauty was the first book I read. I followed that with Treasure Island and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, then moved on to The Secret of the Mansion and the entire series of Trixie Belden books. Which shows exactly how old I am....
Either "Treasure Island", or the first "Hardy Boys" book, though I had a thing for mapping out all the permutations of "chose your own adventure" books (you know where you had to make a decision and turn to a particular page). The first adult book I read was The Rhineman Exchange, by Robert Ludlum.
Was a big reader throughout my elementary school days, and so of course, I can't remember for sure. I always read the Newberry winners like Caddie Woodlawn, and Adam of the Road. E.B. White books (Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little). Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'dell. Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, and Watership Down were all favorites. Did not discover Stephen King until HS
My mother worked in the township building and I would go there after school and spend about 2-3 hours in the town library every day. I can't honestly recall what my first book was back then but I read EVERY Nancy Drew book in the series as a kid. I still have all my scholastic books from when I was a kid. My first book that I recall thinking, "I could read forever" was Pet Semetary by Stephen King.
I honestly cannot recall the first book I read. I was a precocious and prolific reader, though. The school library and the local city library both let me check out 'the adult side" books when I was in fourth grade (thanks to a note from my teacher at the time). I remember reading Dickens "A Tale of Two Cities" when I was nine. That was in 1957. Of course, I re-read it again many years later to understand it all. I haven't stopped since.
"Dune" by Frank Herbert, I was too little at the time to understand it completely, but it really fascinated me and turned me into a sci-fi fan.
We had that Scholastic book club at my school and I ordered books from it all the time. I wish I could remember the 1st. It may have been Encyclopedia Brown.
Journey to the center of the Earth by Jules Verne when I was in the 2nd grade.
Wow, no matter how hard I try, I cannot remember my first real book. It had to have been something like Black Beauty, Lassie or one of the Sunnybank collie books.
I was in the Fourth grade and my first real book I read was Judy Blume - Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. I have had my nose in a book ever since.
One of the Famous Five books by Enid Blyton when I was 6 or 7
Mine was The Shining, which I read while on holiday and staying in a hotel. Not my best move
first book for pleasure was Stephen King's "The Shining" it hooked me on Horror Fiction, the rest is history!
I started The Stand by SK in the 11th grade. I finished it in the 12th grade, lol. Then I read It. Been a horror fan ever since.
HP and the sorcerer's stone when I was 7
Interesting thread. I remember reading Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books. The first book I remember really enjoying reading was a novelization of the movie Alien I got from the scolastic catalog in 6th or 7th grade. The first book as an adult that hooked me into reading for pleasure was The Boys from Brazil by Ira Levin. The book happened to be sitting around the house and I was bored. I was 19. That book captivated me. From there it was Tom Clancy, Steven King, etc. etc.
I don't remember, but my first 'adult novel' that I kind of enjoyed was Codex by Lev Grossman.
Shoot on Sight by Michael Hardcastle, if I remember correctly. It was about football, and I was about 7 years old. I keep meaning to try to track down a second hand copy of it for nostalgia's sake.
The first books I remember reading were fairy tale books, books like Ellen Tebbits and Beezus and Ramona by Beverly Cleary, and children's biographies.
I can't remember not reading. I recall the Nancy Drew books and the Hardy Boys. I was quite young when I read the Beatrice Potter books, too.
The first book that sticks out in my mind is "Little House on the Prairie". I devoured that series of books and have reread them many times. Other than that, I loved Enid Blyton when I was young. Can't remember the names of the books, but I know that they all took place in England.
the first book I ever read was Παραμύθι χωρίς όνομα (A Tale with no name) by Penelope Delta, I really loved it and still that day I remeber it :D
Probably The Hobbit in second grade, followed by LotR. (Not as impressive as it sounds, my mom had already read them to me.)
I can't remember the first book I read, but I can remember the first series I got hooked on. It was written by Curtis Bishop, and was about Little League baseball.
the first real adult novel I read was The Shining by Stephen King....been hooked ever since!
I remember my older sister always reading, one day when bored she told me to read a book. The only ones available were her Harlequin romance for teens books, so I began my love of reading through those books.
Mine was The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. I was 8 and proud that I could read more than a childrens story book. It really made me want to read more because I realized that there were other worlds, people, and stories to explore!
well...I think I was 6, and my first book was Little women. And fairy tales books (Andersen, Perrault, Grimm).
I did a lot of reading when I was younger so, I don't remember what my first book was. I do remember the first SK book my mom let me read though, 'Eyes of the Dragon'.
I hated to read when I was young. I read so slowly it took me forever to get through a book. A guy I liked gave me James Joyce Portriat of an Artist as a Young Man because it was his favorite book so I of course read it.....my world was forever changed.
My earliest memory is The Worst Witch (or something like that) - I had both book and audio version. Never stopped reading since, and was very well known by the school librarian, we were only allowed 1 or 2 out at a time, so I was there most days. The first adult book I remember choosing (I think I read some that were lying about the house first) was Carrie, have read most of his now
I read the 4077 MASH book when I was in 6th grade. (the movie and tv series were based on it)
Quite a eye opener at that age! LOL
Quite a eye opener at that age! LOL
Oh my..remember those books that came w/ the records? The little bell dinged when it was time to turn the page...I think that was the first book I read; Black Beauty.
