SOLVED. YA, girl's mother dies; lives with aunts/ ashes in ziploc bag [s]

It turns out that there are a LOT of books out there with girls who carry around their mother's ashes in plastic bags. In the one I'm looking for, the girl calms herself by licking her fingers and sticking them in the bag. Once during a storm she takes shelter in a cave or something and drops the bag.

I've requested this book from the library to see if it's the right one. The most significant distinguishing feature of the book I'm looking for is how she licks her fingers and puts them in the bag.
