I'd definitely read it. The Shining is a true horror classic!

Black House was a sequel to "The Talisman", with the main character grown up. It was a spectacular, creepy book, with lots of elements added by co-author Peter Straub. I'm looking forward to a Shining sequel.

I might read this, but I still don't think it can be a good idea to try to take a great story a whole book further. Besides, Danny is an alcoholic? Come on. I know the tendency is hereditary, but a third one in a row seems a little... well... boring. AND as far as the plot goes, in The Shining a lot of the horror came from the characters' natural tendencies, rather than the setting of the haunted hotel or the shining, while the sequel sounds more like feasting on supernatural stuff like weird shining-eating caravan tribes and MOAR SHINING!
I love Stephen King's work, but lately he's been a bit hit or miss for me. I'm hoping this one is a hit, but the synopsis makes it seem like quite a different feeling book than The Shining (which I loved).
Serena wrote: "I will read anything Stephen King writes! I just finished reading Joyland, which was a short, fun read. I have high expectations for Doctor Sleep."Lots of people recommended Doctor Sleep so far. I am tempted!
I loved it. He did something totally different yet it was just as fascinating as The Shining. I know sometimes he chugs out clunkers, but this one is a star.
I agree, Julia, Seems like this one followed an old format of his, and it was well thought out. I really liked it.
Oh, but of course. This was his masterpiece. I loved every single sentence except for the bit about the wasps nest. It was inconsistent with a real wasp's nest. In reality it was a hornet's nest, but who cares? Loved it.I am wondering if it will be any good without Jack. Maybe Jack survived the cold and is now in a nut house swatting at flies like Renfield.
Shane wrote: "In a recent Entertainment Weekly article, Stephen King reveled that he is going to write a sequel to "The Shining" - which is apparently the first sequel he's written. Are you interested in readin..."I want to read dr. sleep
Reading Doctor Sleep now and I can't put the book down. All I want to do is read more, more, and more. As a King fan, I haven't been this engrossed in his work since IT. I read a little bit every day. All I think about is going on my lunch break to read some, getting off work to read, reading some more before bed time... It's pretty good. Can't wait to devour the whole thing!
I have it and started it, but set it aside. Was not in the mood for it, but wanting to read it. Looks like its going to be incredible
Scott, it definitely is one you have to be in the mood for. You will enjoy it when you you get around to it.
I thought 'The Shining' was King's first 'Fluff' novel. Didn't think much of it. No interest in revisiting.
The thing i like best about King is that he takes ones childhood nightmares and brings them to life. True, most of his scary novels are predictable, but the Shaw shank Redemption was brilliant. He is a versatile writer and i like that. King is among my favorite writers because he is honest and versatile.
The Shining is the only book that truly scared me. I could not read it when alone in the house, and the movie with Jack Nicholson was just as terrifying! Love it and can't wait to read it!
I was one of the few people I know who had never read the Shining and had not seen the film. Recently I read some Stephen King, the one about the Kennedy plot. Friends who saw me with the book started to recommend the sequel to the Shining. Well, I read the Shining and now I am headed toward the sequel. I look forward to the book so I ask everyone to not tell me about it.
I finished Dr Sleep last month and really enjoyed it :) however like Ron I had not read The Shining until recently, after trying to read it perhaps a little too young and being scared witless! Both were fab reads though and now have firm places in my favourites
I had put off reading the book because I am not sure there could be a good sequel to THE SHINING. But I have it from a reliable source that I will be getting the book for Christmas. So, yes I will read the book.
I agree with Mark, I liked it but did not love it. It was interesting but not scary at all. It really makes very little reference back to the Hotel after the beginning of the book. The main character, Danny, could have been anyone. The Shining was really scary but this book is not. I think Stephen King's scary book days are over but that is okay. He always writes well, 11/22/63 was one of my favs and not scary at all.
First book a hard act to follow. Kind of like when the King-sanctioned movie with the guy from 'Wings' followed the Jack Nicholson portrayal.
The Wings guy was pretty good but no one does "psycho" like Nicholson in the Shining. That "Here's Johnny" scene still haunts me.
I don't think I am going to read it because I didn't like 'The Shining' at all.Maybe I will read it to give shining another chance.
I actually saw the movie first. I really liked it, but it seemed as if there was something missing from it. The book answered the questions that I had. I thought it was great!
Mark wrote: "I just finished it. I liked it but didnt love it. It was very anticlimatic."I agree that his best may be behind him. I think Under the dome was a reminder of how great he can be, but most of his contemporary works pale in comparison to his past. Either way I' ll keep reading. His average is still better than just about anyone else!
Just got Dr Sleep as a Christmas gift. Looked it over, and looks good. I plan to start it after I finish the book I am currently reading.
I plan to read it. "The Shining" was very creepy and enjoyable. I didn't even know who Stephen King WAS when I read it!
My boyfriend actually bought me a copy for Christmas, so I'll be reading it once I get through a couple of other books.
I am thinking of reading the sequel known as "Dr. Sleep" by Stephen king. But he is a little too descriptive for my taste, he doesn't give the reader a chance to imagine the people or the locations. Stephen King writes for movies, not for the reader's imagination. On the other hand his actual story line is fascinating! But who am I to judge! I only read one of the many books he has written!
Finished reading it last night actually. Respectable and never dull, but not even close to being as excellent as its predecessor.
I picked up an ebook copy, I'm about half way in, and I'm really liking it so far :)I need to get a physical copy so I can finish it though :P
I can't not read it but it is probably not a good thing. King is not at the top of his game anymore and the original was written in the prime of his creativity. I have a feeling it will be like a rock band reunion with a new song but I hope I am wrong.
I read the Shining a long time ago, so I re-read it as a refresher before I picked up Doctor Sleep. I remember liking it, The Shining, the first time through. I did not have that experience this time. A lot of people really like Stephen King, and I understand why, he knows how to tell a story for sure, but I cannot abide his writing style. I barely made it through the Shining again, a book I had always loved (or thought that I did). Suffice it to say, I won't be reading Doctor Sleep.
