There are a bunch of them: "Deal or No Deal" and "Don't Forget the Lyrics" and "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" and "Millionaire", off the top of my head.I don't watch any of those -- the concept behind Deal or No Deal seems like the stupidest thing I could imagine spending an hour on, since as I understand it, the fate is pre-ordained.
I do kinda like Ninja Warrior. And "Cash Cab", on Discovery. It makes me want to start taking cabs in NYC instead of trains.
Ah, you're right, Sarah...they're kind of sneaking in under the radar, as far as I'm concerned. I've never seen any of those except the fifth grader one.
when i was a kid a HUGE part of staying home sick from school was drinking tea with my mom and watching game shows during the day. Let's Make A Deal, Price Is Right, Hollywood Squares and What's My Line. i don't watch any of the ones now but i have seen reruns of the drew carey improv deal which is not really a game show but has that format. i love that one
"Cash Cab" is fun. The host is a licensed cab driver, and he picks people up in his cab and then tells them they're on his game show. If they want to play, they have to answer trivia for the duration of their trip. Three wrong answers and they're kicked to the curb. If they get them right, they wind up at their destination several hundred dollars richer. Not really a traditional game show, I guess...
I'm a complete nerd for Jeopardy. I even tried out for it a few years ago in Clearwater. I didn't make it :(
My uncle made it on, around 1989. He's a nuclear physicist. He was doing well until the final round, where the category was "nursery rhymes", I believe, and he bombed.
i had a cousin on who got crushed by the ken jennings machine. he said "ken is really a nice guy" and i was like "...who ripped a wad of money out of your hands"
I loved watching Ken Jennings in action. That guy was an unstoppable force of Mormon geekery. I could sense Trebek getting tired of him though, in the middle stages, til he decided to roll with it because it was bringing in the ratings.
Ken J was an icon in my family's life for that entire period. It was kinda odd seeing them rooting to desperately for some guy they never met. Same for that So You Think You Can Dance mormon dude. Which I think is hilarious because he was so obviously gay and not about mormonism. Neither was his sister. Double-Whammies!!! I loved the little purple monster thing.
My husband LOVES Match Game and even has the Best Of DVD.I'm not really a big game show fan but I guess they're fun every once in a while.
As a kid, I loved Let's Make a Deal, with people dressing up in silly costumes, and the times when folks would win a couple of goats. Funny! I thought The Price Is Right was lame. Who CARES how much detergent costs, when you're eight.
Hee hee I loved Let's Make a Deal (the box or the curtain?). I also watched The Newlywed Game. *blush*But my favorite was To Tell The Truth. Do you remember that one?
I'm ashamed for my husband's sake that he watches AND ENJOYS Deal Or No Deal. Waaaah.
I'll try to find it, but I once saw a video of some of Alex's out takes, where he curses, and appears drunk! It was a real shocker. Alex Trebec???!!!
Can't make me look! I like my Alex without the disillusionment, I guess. All-knowing and a touch condescending to the ladies...
I loved that clip when I first saw it. Trebek also has an uncredited role as a Man In Black on what is unquestionably the best X-Files episode ever, "Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space.'"
Me, too. Plus I miss that show's tongue-in-cheek humor being mixed with both the eerie and the intelligent in its plots. If they'd had a coherent backstory instead of lurching about like they did it would have been a perfect show.
I like Survivor. That's kind of a game show. When I was little I liked how the announcers on The Price is Right would say, "A neeeeeeew caaaaaaar!" But the actualy game part, notsomuch.
I can't commit to that much, so I wait until the DVD set comes out. (TrueBlood May 19th!!!) Most of the reality shows I can't stomach... bleh. Except 'So You Think You Can Dance', that's just my fantasy come true (without me, I might add).I can't handle how snippy, devious, hostile, shallow, backstabbing and downright cruel most of those shows are. Why do I need to have that kind of energy blasted at me from a little box in my room? I can get that stepping into the real world.
Bun, do you mean shows like Lost?I got so into Damages last year, what a terrific show. And then I watched the first 2 episodes this year. After that Richard's been away it seems for months (back and forth but more forth than back) and I've kept the TV off for most of the time. He keeps telling me it's great, and has them all on DVR for me, but by now I'm 8 episodes behind and that's just too much.
Matchgame was the best. Hilarious double entendre questions with a funny quick witted Gene Rayburn as host.
"Cash Cab" is a good game show Sarah, we probably see it a couple times a week after work.

Oh, wait, Wheel of Fortune is still on. Right? And Drew Carey does The Price is Right. I think.
