I am sure it was intentional. Even though Samwise translates as "simple minded" or "half-minded" It seems to me it was his way of saying "Sam the Wise" in the English language without putting it that way.

At least I thought that from the time I was a small child.

Much love to the person who said Radagast the Brown! He stuck out for me too, the first time I read The Lord of the Rings, even though his role is relegated to about one line in the entire trilogy! I love that they brought him into The Hobbit, but that's not how I imagined him.

But as for my favorite characters - Bilbo and Gandalf. I was always disappointed that Bilbo wasn't the lead character, and that Frodo was instead. Bilbo is a more interesting character.
