Staff at the library post each week about what they're reading and loving (or not!) - what about you? Post in the Member Picks folder about books that have you on a soapbox!

Jennifer Garlen | 2 comments I just finished THE DESERT OF SOULS by Howard Andrew Jones, and it was very good, a great choice for fans of THE ARABIAN NIGHTS and classic fantasy by writers like Robert E. Howard and Fritz Leiber. I'm now reading THE MIDWIFE'S TALE by former UAH History professor Sam Thomas. If you like historical mysteries with strong female characters, you will probably enjoy it very much, although I don't yet know how the story will end.

Thanks for posting Jennifer! I looked up Desert of Souls and it looks like one we need to add to the library collection. I ordered The Midwife's Tale a few months ago because I knew it would be of great interest to our patrons and then I found out soon after that Mr. Thomas was formerly at UAH! Another one I need to add to my reading list.

Heather (dragonflymornings) | 43 comments It was a rough book week for me. I finished Gone Girl this week and was underwhelmed. The ending bothered me. The writing was very intense and captivating so I'd be willing to read more by Gillian Flynn, but I would give this a two out of five. It was just okay.
Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters was just awful. The writing wasn't consistent. It was like the author had taken Jane's words and stuffed a completely unrelated story into a classic. I really wanted to like that one too.
I am about 1/3 of the way through Mr Punumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore and so far I really love it!

Heather, I read Gone Girl as well and I loved Flynn's writing. I am in the middle of her earlier book, Dark Places, right now. It's pretty raw (as far as subject matter)but the writing has been great. I will review on Staff Picks when I am done.

For the Jane Austen mash-ups, I never really was drawn to read them in the first place. I guess it's because I love her so much I didn't want to see it defiled ;-) My husband did get me Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter as a present though, so I need to read that.

Very interested in Mr. Penumbra - please let us know what you think of it! Thanks for posting!

As for Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter, I can vouch that it was an awesome book. It makes the idea seem very possible, but you still get a lot of true history in there as well. A very fun read. =)
