I hate my body. It's allergic to all sorts of food and insects and plants. It has a broken bone. It looks like I eat more than I do. But mostly, I hate my right retina, because according to my eye doctor today, it is a splitting or split retina. I need to go back in 3 months to see how it changes and I need to go in immediately if I see light flashes and/or floating particles. I just nodded and said, okay, okay, bye! I didn't ask any questions, like "WTF IS A SPLITTING RETINA?!" I try to love on my body, but it's always betraying me.

So far, I've resisted googling it because I don't want to know, but I did google it to give you an image:

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

That pluggy part at the top right is the most disturbing part of the photo.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm going to try not to think about it before my appointment in 3 months.

message 5: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 5729 comments What is that pluggy part?? eyes are gross. Is that the optic nerve or just some weirdness in the photo? (I think those splits sometimes heal on their own...maybe that's why they just want to check again in 3 months?)

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

It was a routine eye exam, but then he had to do more tests on that eye.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, I'm near-sighted. Very.

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

Does the split retina make you go blind?! That's what I'm afraid to ask.

message 9: by Stina (new)

Stina (stinalee) | 653 comments Holy crap... you have the most interesting maladies right now. A broken elbow AND a split retina? I suppose it's better than a broken retina and a split elbow, but still...

message 10: by Lori (new)

Lori (tnbbc) ugh. this thread is making my knees weak.
I have crap vision, and an astigmatism. Ive never heard of a splitting retina. What shit luck woman! How is your eye feeling now? No pain, or weird shit?

Go on: Hate that eye. I'll help ya out and hate it with you!

message 11: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 5729 comments I had my eyes lasered in November and they told me I was at a greater risk for a detached retina afterwards. I wasn't paying close attention to why because I was panicking about the proceedure but maybe something about the severity of my nearsightedness or the shape of my retina?? My dad has a detached retina and I think there is something about it being hereditary too. SCARY! Let's not think about it! I'm sure your little split is going to heal itself along with your elbow! (I hate that I could smell burning flesh when I got my eyes lasered!)

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

That's really gross, Gretchen. The flesh burning thing. I really can't believe that people eat meat, sometimes.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

When he was taking forever looking at my right eye, he wasn't telling me anything and I was internally freaking out. I thought I had a tumor in my eye and pictured myself getting my eye removed to save my life.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

I have cataracts (I was born with them) and astigmatism.

message 15: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell Sarah, in your case your eyes are there for aesthetics, not utility.

smetchie | 5729 comments It WAS gross Montambo. And it didn't smell like burning flesh in the yummy way a steak smells cooking on the grill. You wouldn't hear anyone say: "Woah...what's that smell? Is that your eyeball skin? I want a bite of that when it's ready."
(so is that how it feels to a vegetarian when people talk about dogging some chicken wings?)

message 17: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 11, 2009 06:12PM) (new)

Thanks, Dave. You're sweet. I'd like to keep some utility, though.

Gretchen: O_o

message 18: by smetchie (last edited Mar 11, 2009 06:12PM) (new)

smetchie | 5729 comments What is that? Are you making a squinty eye at me?

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

That's what my face looked like when I read your post.

message 20: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 5729 comments So IS that what it's like? Does steak not seem like food but like burned flesh? I'm being serious. I want to know.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes. The hardest thing for me to eat would be anything that I could compare to human body parts. Cooked chicken reminds me of human anatomy muscular charts. If there's a bone in it, that's the worst. Blech.

message 22: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 5729 comments I had a friend who wouldn't eat artichokes because they have a "heart".

message 23: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 11, 2009 06:55PM) (new)

What a dumbass. She He has to make up semantic affectations.

message 24: by smetchie (last edited Mar 11, 2009 06:53PM) (new)

smetchie | 5729 comments HAHA did you do that little sexist thing on purpose?

SHE is a dumbass. She is actually a physician now!
I hate when smart people are stupid.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Oops!

message 26: by Malbadeen (new)

Malbadeen I hate that you posted on here about your malady before calling to tell me about it! Geesh. I go to Jury duty for two days and all of a sudden we're strangers.
*I promise not to laugh at this one. well, unless it turns out you split your retina by getting an allergic reaction to the some antibiotic ointment you accidentally brushed your teeth with and the spray of spitting it out caused you to stab your eye with something near by while trying to wipe it off. if that happened, I might laugh just a little.

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

marie, i didn't want to call while you were at jury duty. plus i took a nap.

message 28: by Donitello (new)

Donitello Montambo, I just visualized the split smoothing over like the water does when the elusive Loch Ness Monster dips out of sight. Did I really see that? No, couldn't have. Nothing but a beautiful glassy surface now.

message 29: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 5729 comments Did you ever get this re-checked, Sarah?

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes. No change. Still at risk for detachment, but not detaching. So far.

That eye really hurts right now, though. The eyelid feels sore like it's bruised and now the cheek all around the eye feels like it's bruised!! WTF?! I will probably wake up looking like a mutant.

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay. I once thought I was seeing sparks and I went in that day. Josh made me, but I should still get some credit.

message 32: by Donitello (new)

Donitello So what did they say when they looked at it?

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

No sign of any progression from the previous visit. He said the flashes could have been from a number of things, which he told me and I've forgotten.
