Liv (liviebutton) Surprisingly it was hard to find a Scottish actor for Jamie (about his age). Do you think Madden would look good with red hair? I'm not sure...

Either way here is my casting for the main characters.

http://pinterest.com/wasabikid/vf-out...

Who would you pick?

And your casting for the waterhorse?

message 3: by Liv (new)

Liv (liviebutton) Nessie of course :]

message 4: by Katie (new)

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments I always pictured Jason Isaacs as Randall! Good call!

message 5: by Holly (new)

Holly (holly-kat) I agree with Olivia, I TOTALLY saw Claire as Hayley Atwell, I think because she was very 40's looking in Captain America. Other than that, I thought of Richard Armitage for Dougal, but I had trouble casting everyone else. I could not picture anyone as Jamie except the one my imagination came up with, he's hard to cast :/

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 48 comments My current favorite Claire is Marion Cotillard.

She has a great face for period dramas and it looks like she could play young or old (the pic with no makeup ages her). Since Claire ages over the course of the books, I like seeing someone who can be a bit more flexible looking with the age.

message 7: by Liv (new)

Liv (liviebutton) Marion is a good choice Stacia! Anyone else have ideas for who should play Jamie? I find him very hard to cast.

message 8: by Christine (new)

Christine | 29 comments I started picturing Adrian Paul from back when he was playing Highlander as Jamie if he had red hair.......but that could also be because I'm having a Highlander marathon right now. :)

message 9: by Ender (new)

Ender Wiggin (enderwigginout) | 137 comments Wait, wait, wait...Adrian Paul? I lurved me some Adrian Paul back in the day but there's no way in the world I could picture him as a red head. Apparently, your imagination is vastly superior to mine. ;p

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 48 comments I think one of Gabaldon's earlier inspirations for Jamie was Gabriel Aubrey, but I just don't see it, even with the hair changed to red. I picture Jamie as looking more rugged.

Across the net, one of the fan favorites tends to be Chris Hemsworth (part of which I'm assuming has to do with his size). Gabaldon is not a fan, partly because she doesn't like widow's peaks on men (I'm not joking).

Well thats weird considering for the role they would just change his hairstyle.

message 12: by Bee (new)

Bee (bistitchualbee) I know he's Irish, not Scottish, but I can't picture Jamie as anyone other than Aiden Turner.

I've been completely stuck on Claire, though, and I'm so glad someone mentioned Marion Cotillard because she's perfect (especially in that middle picture)!

message 13: by Bee (new)

Bee (bistitchualbee) I also mentally cast a younger version of Aidan Gillen for Frank/Randall.

message 14: by Erin (new)

Erin (erie3746) | 24 comments I've never tried this before so don't yell if I'm terrible but lets see... Kevin McKidd seems like a reasonable choice for Jamie, Dominic West Frank/Black Jack - just something about the way he smiles... I LOVE Marion Cotillard for Claire. And can we just stand Ewen McGregor in the back somewhere?

message 15: by Bee (new)

Bee (bistitchualbee) Erin wrote: "And can we just stand Ewen McGregor in the back somewhere? "

Yes. He can be in the background of every scene as far as I'm concerned ;)

message 16: by Ender (new)

Ender Wiggin (enderwigginout) | 137 comments Erin wrote: "And can we just stand Ewen McGregor in the back somewhere? "

Bwahahahahaha!

message 17: by Ashley (new)

Ashley H. (ashleydoogah) | 20 comments I pictured Rachel Weisz as Claire... or possibly Emilia Clarke as a brunette (like in this pic: http://tinyurl.com/b938tg7).

But like a lot of people, I had trouble casting Jamie, even though I had a strong image of him in my mind! Love Olivia's idea of casting Richard Madden.

Erin wrote: "And can we just stand Ewen McGregor in the back somewhere?"

The perfect man! I wanted to cast him in this somewhere but didn't know where he'd fit... so yes, let's just have Ewan in every scene. =)

I think I could def see Tony Curran as Calum. Good choices!

message 19: by Olivia (new)

Olivia Bartlett (viabartlett) I couldn't help but think of Brynjolf (Skyrim) for Dougal MacKenzie - I know he isn't real, but I couldn't get that image out of my mind. I absolutely agree with Olivia with Jason Isaacs and Richard Armitage for the Randalls! Jamie was Bradley James (Prince Arthur from Merlin) for me, though. :)

message 20: by Julianne (last edited Jan 22, 2013 12:13AM) (new)

Julianne I TOTALLY thought of Richard Madden for Jamie! :D
I have been thinking Anne Hathaway for Claire. I'm not even the biggest Anne Hathaway fan, but I just think she'd totally nail the slightly annoying, outspoken, bossy, yet caring aspects of Claire.

Crankyfacedknitter | 27 comments I could see Sean Biggerstaff as a good Ian, actually.
Loving the idea of Domhnall Gleeson as Jamie! He's the closest I've seen to my mental picture, especially the black and white pictures on IMDB with the very short beard. Jamie always seemed to me to be very young at heart, in spite of all the crap he's been through and all the scars and responsibilities he carries. Domhnall looks like he could be roughened up a bit, without being chiseled to unrelatable perfection like so many leading men (and ladies) are these days. I'd very much prefer someone who looks more like a real person and less like a plastic mannequin.

Richard Armitage is perfect for Frank/Black Jack. He can be more traditionally beautiful than Jamie, which fits the description quite well for ironic purposes.

Bee (bistitchualbee) Joia wrote: " Sean Biggerstaff (Oliver Wood from the early Harry Potter movies)"

I had the biggest crush on Oliver Wood when I saw the first Harry Potter film in theaters. I recently watched it again and felt like such a pedo since I'm twenty-seven now and film!Oliver is still a teen. I need to watch him in something recent so I can stop feeling icky.

Olivia wrote: "I couldn't help but think of Brynjolf (Skyrim) for Dougal MacKenzie - I know he isn't real, but I couldn't get that image out of my mind. "

It wouldn't be the first time I've cast video game characters, too. I only made it through Gabriel's Ghost because I cast everyone as characters from Mass Effect.

I heartily endorse both of these ideas! I loved Oliver Wood in the HP movies, and I agree with the assessment of Jamie being very young at heart despite all the tragedies in his life. He should be a little rough around the edges too, but be able to clean up well.

I admit to picture myself as Claire for most of the book, or at least thinking how I would react in the same situation. If the name fits!

message 24: by Claire (new)

Claire (cacromwell) | 221 comments I know he's not an actor, or Scottish, but I'm surprised no one ha put forth a vote for Prince Harry yet! Red hair, check, blue eyes, check. I'm sure he could rock a kilt as well.

Outlander is so hard for me to cast. There are some awesome suggestions in this thread, but I keep finding myself nitpicking them!

Here's a decent mock-up of Gabriel Aubrey. Sexy, but I think he's a little too... pretty for Jamie.

Starz is developing an Outlander TV show (which really just means they've written and might shoot a pilot). It's being written by Ronald Moore who wrote for Star Trek: TNG and Deep Space Nine and produced the Battlestar Galactica remake. If it goes forward it will be REALLY interesting to see how the casting goes.

It gets especially difficult when you look at it from a series perspective. There are 20 years between Books 2 and 3 - so they would need actors who can play different ages. But that's kind of off topic... lol

I can't see David Tennant as anyone but The Doctor but that's just cause he's my favorite one. But I love the idea of Tony Curran. That episode was amazing. I cried and cried.

I would probably watch it if it when forward. ^^

Christy wrote: "I thought Michael Fassbender would be a good possible Jamie."

Fassbender *swoon* I just found out he was playing Altair in Assassin's Creed movie, another reason why I will watching it.

message 29: by Alisha (new)

Alisha Jones | 7 comments Jamie - Michael Fassbender from 300
Claire - Rachel McAdams from
Sherlock Holmes
Jack Randall - Tom Hallender from Pirates of the Caribbean
Frank Randall - Charlie Cox from Boardwalk Empire

Crankyfacedknitter | 27 comments Joia wrote: Do you think that's part of the attraction of Scottish, Irish, Welsh, and Australian actors - a rugged or scrappy quality that tends to get winnowed out of studio system casting?

I think that might be part of it. American casting tends to place the less-than-perfect actors in gritty action movies where they are more likely to be anti-heroes, or trying to compete with Jason Statham. Those aren't necessarily the movies I watch, and even if I do, the actors are generally not washed and attired for optimum romantic ogling. As pretty as many of the Rom-Com actors are, it's hard for me to relate to a perfectly-chiseled face.

message 31: by Goddessfreya (new)

Goddessfreya | 9 comments I agree with Claire. I thought of Prince Harry as a possibility for Jamie as well! In addition to the hair, eyes and kilt

message 32: by Goddessfreya (new)

Goddessfreya | 9 comments I agree with Claire. I also thought of Prince Harry as a possibility for Jamie. In addition to the hair, eyes, and kilt rocking capabilities, he also has a mischievous look and I think that is definitely a look Jamie would have. The only issue I have is he just doesn't seem rugged enough...

message 33: by Sharon (new)

Sharon | 3 comments The author actually has a list of possible casts for her characters on Facebook.

https://www.facebook.com/AuthorDianaG...

Personally I would choose Chris Hemsworth for Jamie and I love the idea of Claire being played by Julianna Margulies. From what I've seen of her, I think Emile de Raven would make a good Laoghaire. Tom Hiddleston would make a great Lord John.

message 34: by Liv (new)

Liv (liviebutton) I love how she casted Miss Piggy as one of the choices for Laoghaire, had a lol moment there.

Though I do like the idea of Emile de Raven

message 35: by Marissa (new)

Marissa J | 6 comments My-First-person-that-came-to-my-head-while-reading casting list:
Claire- Jenny Lee from Call the Midwife on BBC
Frank/Black Jack - Frank Burns from M*A*S*H
Jamie- Jaime Lannister from Game of Thrones
Colum- Gollum from Lord of the Rings
Dougal- Rufus Sewell
Laoghaire- Natalie Dormer from Game of Thrones
Geillis- Chloë Sevigny

Bonnie Prince Charlie- Ewan McGregor (I mean come on, can you think of a "Bonnier"? Scottish actor)??
Assorted folk with accents/red hair that I'm sure we'll find a part 'cause there are ALOT of characters
Karen Gillan, Gerard Butler,James McAvoy, and David Tennant

message 36: by Liv (new)

Liv (liviebutton) Aha, gollum!

Jenny Lee is an awesome call, I love that show.

Diet Coke just released a new "hunk" commercial (apparently this was a thing they did in the 80s?):

His name is Andrew Cooper, here is the commercial on YouTube and here is a google image search of him.

He's not perfect, but give him some red hair and he would definitely make a convincing Jamie.

message 38: by Laura (new)

Laura Seagraves | 5 comments I always thought of Alex Kingston as Claire.

message 39: by Diana (new)

Diana (dianagiovinazzo) I think David Tennant would make an excellent Jack/Frank

message 40: by Madeline (new)

Madeline (scribeofvoid) | 8 comments I always thought of Jamie as Domnhall Gleeson. How did no one else see this?

Margo - Putting the Mmmmmm back in Menage | 40 comments Claire - Rachel Weisz and Marion Cotillard are great suggestions. Anne Hathaway doesn't have the gravitas. Ever seen Becoming Jane Austen? She just wasn't quite right.

Jaimie - I know he's too old now, but I often pictured Liam Neeson and not just b/c he was in Rob Roy. The author always described Jaimie as having a knife edge nose with the look of a Viking. Liam Neeson has that in spades. I could also go for James McAvoy - the only problem being he's too short. Being large is a big part of the character.

Jack Randal - Jason Isaacs hands down.

Dougal - Richard Armitage would be great.

Geillis Duncan - Amanda Seyfried

Who the heck is going to tackle Colum? Maybe James McAvoy could take on that role. It's not going to be an easy one.

message 42: by Rhiannon (last edited Mar 16, 2013 05:11AM) (new)

Rhiannon | 7 comments This is going to sound weird and I'm not even as big a Harry Potter fan as most of you probably are, but I couldn't help but see the parallels and picture a slightly beefier Rupert Grint as Jamie. Especially when the author kept describing his long, thick, pale red eyelashes. If you think about it all the actors are about the right age now, they're all in their mid-20s. So then I started seeing Emma Watson as Claire and when I got a flash of Daniel Radcliffe as Frank/Jack it all clicked!

According to Starz' twitter (@starz_channel), Sam Heughan has been officially cast as Jamie for the upcoming TV show.

The picture links are acting funny, here's a link to Google Images: https://www.google.com/search?q=sam+h...

ETA: The announcement tweet is now gone from Starz' Twitter. Don't shoot the messenger if it turns out that it was wrong!

message 45: by Ivia (new)

Ivia (iviarelle) Sam Heughan has posted it to his own Twitter (@heughan), so I think we can call it official! I'm excited to see how he does, he's not far off my mental image.

Emily Kao Messmer | 20 comments I'm looking forward to see how Sam Heughan portrays Jamie, since Diana Gabaldon gushed about how he's perfect and how his audition tape blew her away.
