Ender’s Game
question
Did you see the "twist" at the end coming?

I haven't read this book in a number of years, but I still remember being absolutely blown away by the "twist" near the end. I had to chew on this ending for days before I could accept it and all of its implications. I am curious whether any of you saw it coming, or if anyone else was as stunned by it as I was. I thought it was brilliant.

NOT AT ALL!!!
And that's what I loved about it! Was a total shocker!

I did see the twist coming when I first read the book. I've read/seen/played so many space operas that I knew the endings usually before they happened. This book, however, I didn't guess till around the end. I think it was during the final 'test.'
I'm not bashing the book or anything, it was a good book. Even when I guessed the end, I still wanted to keep reading.

I had a feeling that something like that was going to happen but I kept telling myself that it would be too obvious. I tricked myself that the trick was too tricky to be a trick, so it did catch me a bit by surprise.
Absolutely ..but this didn't stopped me to enjoy every page .. and to re read it 10 years later...
From a million miles.
I never would have guessed. But Bean did in Ender's Shadow for those of you who read that.
It did seem like it was coming by the time I got there... which is, I guess, my way of saying I saw it coming, but wasn't bothered by the "twist" not being very twisty.
In retrospect, I wonder if there isn't a 2nd question: should the characters have seen it coming?

I think I had heard of an unnamed book with the twist ending that EG has, so when I started EG I thought "ah, this must be that book".
It's a while since I read it but I remember having a pretty good idea where it was going some time before the 'big reveal.' However for me it didn't spoil what is a very good book.
I would add one criticism that stops me from making this one of my top books. And that is that he would have done better making Ender a little older than he did. He even writes him older in my opinion, the behaviour and motivations that he gave Ender point at a significantly older child - maybe 9-10 when he first starts battle school rather than six.

I had no idea what was going to happen. I was totally surprised by the twist. Loved the book though. :)
Crazy but I thought the last game was the beginning of the war.
No, I did not see it coming. I thought it was great, and I give my fellow geeks credit for not spoiling it for me. I had no idea at all!
I read Speaker For The Dead first... so, no twist for me, sadly.
Unfortunately - yes. Which was a shame as the book would have been more enjoyable otherwise. Ah well, I blame in too many detective stories.
Still a good book though :)

Never never never saw it coming. Totally blown away by the surprise. Amazing book, one of my favorites :)
One of the few books which I have reread, it is that good. But I must confess that the ending, while not a dead cert, was not unexpected.
No, I didn't see it coming, when it should have been obvious, but that's the genius of Orson Scott Card's writing. The ending was superb and very moving. I thought about it for days after and reread the last few pages over and over.
Saw it coming because I was so close to the end of the pages and they hadn't started fighting for real yet so I thought that it was a possibility that they were doing it for real
I was listening to the audiobook read by Stefan Rudnicki. When the big reveal came I was pulling into my driveway in the car. I sat and listened to the rest of the chapter with tears in my eyes. Good thing I wasn't on the freeway!
I suspected that there would be a twist, but not that twist. It made the book even greater!
Never saw it coming. It absolutely floored me. The ending of the book is the reason it is one of my all-time favorites.
I did not see any of it coming. I knew that something big was going to happen, since it was towards the end of the book and the plot was going pretty slow, but I did not expect it to be what it was. Now that I have had time to let all of the story embed in my brain, I realize that I should have seen it coming with the information that the author put into Ender's thoughts.
I knew something was coming; I couldn't have guessed what. My 12-year-old mind was floored.
Well, I only made the connection when they said there were all these important people watching the final battle. It was a great book though, still a great reveal.
As I was approaching the twist, I was totally confused because I knew the way it was ending didn't make sense, but I didn't see it coming. I think it might have to do with the way you read...I never really try to think about what's coming, just what I'm reading at the moment. But my sister is always guessing what will come next as she reads, and she saw it coming way ahead of time.
I saw it coming from a mile away. Still thought it was brilliant though.

I truly had no clue. Although after re-reading it, I am surprised I didn't notice it before. All of the signs were there, but it's hard to put them together.
Yeah, it was just on the way. Very good read, might do it again some day.
I didn't really see it comming. Afterwards though I was thinking "Of course!" as the everything clicked into place.
Yes, I did see it coming. And I was pretty sure my feeling was right when I noticed that only few pages remained in the book. Too few to have another grand finale. Still, I liked the twist.
I didn't see it coming at all having never heard any hype surrounding the book. Loved the book!
THe author lead me perfectly, there were clues along the way, but I did not make the connections until the very end. Awesome!
I read EG when it came out long ago. I did not see the twist coming, but everything clicked when the twist was explained. I recall having to think about the implications back then.
Many times, SF becomes dated (Lord Valentine for example). EG is a classic that won't become outdated, which is good.

I saw the twist coming but thought it was brilliantly done. To be fair, there were clues about many things, the twist wasn't a foregone conclusion but I thought it tied all of the story elements together. This is one of my favorite books, YA or otherwise.
Excellent book, I have read it many times. Yes, I did have an inkling on the ending, but suppressed it to not ruin the ending! One of my favorite books.
From some spoilers I knew it was coming. But, I got so caught up in the story.. That I didn't catch on till it was revealed.
I did not see it coming. Such a great book.
I did see it coming actually. Once he went into the last set of games. I had sussed it out. I wasn't disappointed though. If he had done something else I would have been annoyed.
While I frequently see the solution to the story before the end in books, this one caught me delightfully unprepared. The way it all unfolded kept me in the moment and not conjecturing what would happen next, only enjoying what was happening now. I'm glad I wasn't overly clever in this case. I still remember the exhileration and joy of that climactic moment and wouldn't have had it blunted for anything. It's still in my top five favorite books of all time--and I have read over 1000 books.
Not until Ender actually is called upon for the final war game, but even then it was a brilliant revelation. This is one of those books that kept me thinking about it even a week after I finished it; which I believe makes for a fantastic read.
I first read Enders Game about 30 years ago, I think. I've reread it twice since but not in the last 15 or so years. I think I might have been surprised by the twist but agree that all the clues were there to not have been. I love the book. I have given it many times as a gift and recommend it all the time. Just a flat out great story.
