What are U doing today? (Ongoing thread)
I took today & tomorrow off work & got a fair amount done today. I put up 3 panels of fence that the horses took out, mowed all the fields, got the hay rack in, yearly maintenance on the big tractor & mower deck, & took the heater out of the horse's water trough. Whew! Lots done & it's great seeing some chores finally coming off the spring list. I have a big pile of mulch to distribute as I weed again. Tomorrow morning, I'm getting the kid down the road to come help me rebuild the log jumps between the fields. (I took the old ones out yesterday.) That should just take a few hours in the morning, so maybe I'll get to the mulch in the afternoon, although there's still burlap to put up in the barn, gutters to fix, & a bunch of other stuff on the list. Of course, new things keep popping up.
Well, I have a 3 day weekend coming, too. That & the beautiful weather all help. It was a gorgeous day today. The dogs were good helpers & left me alone. Of course the horses aren't & didn't. Chip & Indy picked tools out of my tool bucket earlier today. Chip had a hacksaw blade still in its package that he was waving at Rascal. Indy got several things out & seemed to like the noise as they fell in the bed of my truck. Monsters!
Some recent photos around the farm. We had kind of a fun dust up tonight when I cut a small limb off a Red bud & tossed it over the fence. The goats & horses wanted to eat & play with it.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...
A robin made a nest in the overhang of my shop. Here are a few pictures of the eggs & babies.

Thanks for the pics, Jim. Looks like they all had a good time. It's the first time I've ever seen horses lying down and "sleeping" like that. Why are the horses separated by a fence in the "sleeping pic"?
PS-The robin pics are great!
Speedy is in his paddock, Joy. The other two are out in the south field. We have to limit the amount of grass he gets this time of year because he gets too fat & he's not handling it well. He's old, so it's kind of like old age diabetes in people.
Just found this:http://www.nydailynews.com/news/natio...
"Goat reunited with donkey best friend at animal sanctuary"
"Mr. G, the goat, and Jellybean, the donkey, had lived in home with atrocious conditions, but were split up after authorities stepped in. When Mr. G ended up in a new rescue, he simply stayed in his pen and didn't eat for six days. But his new owners tracked down Jellybean and brought the animal to see Mr. G - who perked up and ate for the first time in nearly a week. ... 'Never doubt the depth of emotions other animals possess,' said Animal Place [Rescue Ranch]."

Thanks, Werner. It's an electric fence, Joy. Touching it is painful & he could jump it if he could see it better or panicked. We've had horses & deer run through them before, but it usually works. Most fences only usually work.
Neat story about the goat & donkey.
I trimmed my weigela bushes in September last year. That's way too late. They barely bloomed this year. They bloom here in May, so I guess I'll try trimming them in July next year. Trimming them in June allows them to grow too much so they flatten out.
The super cold winter we had last year has messed around with a lot of bushes, too. The Rose of Sharon are slow coming back. The crepe myrtal & butterfly bushes died. One of the former & the latter are coming back from the root, though. Suprisingly, the golden rain tree, which died off in a previous winter once that wasn't nearly as cold, came through just fine.

You show what good care they are given. And those robin's eggs; what a great shot. They should be on a greeting card.
Aren;t animals kind and caring for one another. We could take lessons/I guess we do try but sometimes life gets in the way.
Don't take any lessons from our dogs. They think playing tug of war with a rabbit or squirrel until they tear it into pieces that they can eat is the finest kind of fun.
Our dogs have such odd sleeping arrangements. Here we had just finished dinner & were watching TV. Lily wasn't happy that I got up to take the picture. Belly rubs were demanded upon my return.https://www.goodreads.com/photo/user/...
If I suddenly go mostly offline for a few days, don't be alarmed; it will just mean my home computer is in the shop. Ever since I added the new version of the Kindle app, I discovered that it apparently came with a bunch of Trojan horse malware, which at first only resulted in a plethora of unwanted pop-up boxes every time the computer is turned on. But now, the PC has begun to have spells in which, almost ever time a new link is clicked, the "script stops running" (at times for long periods). I was going to wait on taking it to be debugged until Barb and I go up to Fulks Run for a vacation the week of June 9; but if this continues, I won't wait. (At work, I get on Goodreads on my meal breaks; but since the library created a Goodreads group, when I'm at work I feel a duty to spend my Goodreads time there, so that it's more work-related. :-) )
You get a lot of bugs, Werner. Good luck with it. It probably wasn't the Kindle, at least not the link I sent you to, but something else. Unfortunately, it's easy to get a bug & once you get one, they tend to pull in more. Porn sites are among the most secure while religious sites are among the most hacked. The porn folks are generally on the cutting edge & want to make money, so they spend a lot on security while many churches & other small nonprofits tend to rely on members to set up & secure their sites. Often they try to save a bit of money & allow ad streams which are often hacked. I've had users even get trojans by moving their mouse over an ad on MSN or AOL, so they're rough.
True, Jim; but I don't surf the net much, usually visit only a handful of sites (and none such as you describe), and hadn't visited anything out of routine on the day this started. It began immediately after downloading the Kindle app, and the instant synchronity seems suggestive. Your advice wasn't at fault, though; I wanted the app, and we couldn't have predicted any problem. It should be the kind of thing that our tech, Rudy, can clean up; he's debugged the unit before. :-)
Cute pic, Jim. It's great the way dogs never have trouble sleeping. :)Werner, good luck with your computer!

Busy cooking day yesterday for various family memembers/molasses ginger cookies, apricot bars, spice cake with maple syrup frosting. The kitchen counters were covered with powdered sugar and both kitchen sinks filled with pans and utensils to be washed/birds didn't get fed until afternoon Hope the apricot bars made it safely back to TX with my son. He loves them. NOT cooking today.
Nebraska got hit HARD last night! tornado watches; severe thunderstorms; flooding in lowland areas--we really got it!Isaw a picture on the news--I'd never seen softball sized hail before & now I have.
Lots of tree and roof damage; power loss and so on. Unoffical total is 5.3 inches of rain!!!
Think I'll remain inside until things get cleaned up a little.
At least, no tornados but it is still hard to have such bad storms. Feast or famine/drought in poor CA farmlands. Joy, you might want to check out a book, "The Daring Ladies of Lowell," by Kate Alcott. It is a historical novel set in MA about the mills. I got it as a birthday present and haven't read it yet but sounds good.
We'll be leaving on vacation early Tuesday morning, and returning on Sunday. However, our computer tech is going out of town on Friday, and possibly won't be back until the following Wednesday. To take advantage of the one window of opportunity when he can possibly debug this computer by Monday night (though the debugging may take longer), I'm going to take this computer to his shop after I post this. So, I may not be back online until Sunday, June 15. I'll miss you folks, and I wish you all a wonderful new week!
Thanks for the good wishes, everybody! Nina, we'll be headed to the vicinity of Fulks Run, up in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley area, to spend a few days with Barb's side of the family. We've decided to postpone our departure until Wednesday morning, to give both Barb and Deborah time to more fully recover from their viruses.Yay! I was able to pick my computer up this evening, and it now has a clean bill of health! Interestingly, though, our computer tech doesn't think the Kindle app was the source of the malware. Anyway, I've now installed both Adblocker and Malware Bytes (thanks for the links, Jackie!) in addition to my virus protection program.
I'm wondering if Fulk's Run is anywhere near Massanutten, Va in the Valley. My in laws live there. It is near Harrisonburg.
Yes, Nina, both localities are near Harrisonburg. I didn't know you had in-laws in the vicinity! It's a small world. :-)
So much for my best laid plans. I did get out to the shop, but made a screen for the crawlspace & then took my pickup out into the field to fix the goats' paddock & cut up a tree that had fallen into the field. I forgot the ground pipe for the fence charger, so I stopped by the back gate & walked back to the shop to get it. It took me about 3 minutes & I came back to find my steering wheel chewed down to the metal for about 8"! Indy taste tested it.While I was cutting up the tree, Marg heard a fawn bawling & thought Lily might have gotten one. We spent 20 minutes or so looking & did see a doe run out of the woods, but didn't find the fawn. A few hours later I looked out the back door & saw the fawn. Indy followed me over & about jumped out of his skin when he saw this fearsome predator, but his antics chased the fawn out of the field, so he actually helped for a change. Lily was highly upset that I told her to stay in the yard, but she's a perfect puppy & did it.
I didn't get to finish the mulch or get in a nap today, but it was a good Father's Day. Erin called me just before I was going to lay down. James called me just after I laid down & I had to get off the phone with him when Marg got back with groceries. Brandon called when I was mowing the lawn, so I called him back when I was done, then had to hang up because Marg was ready to go for a ride. Had a nice one with her although the green-head flies are out & they were driving Chip to distraction.
Pilger, Nebraska---about 3 hours drive from Omaha--is picking up the pieces after sever thunderstorms and a tornado.16 person in hospital, seriously injured and two dead, one a 5 year old child.
Omaha just got rain the really severer weather missed us. Please pray for those affected by this horrible storm.
My prayers are with the people in Pilger, Mary JL, especially the family of the little 5-year-old. I'm so very sorry to hear about this! :-(
I have not been posting for a bit because I am doing some volunteer work for our church. Just paperwork but it needs doing and I usually work on this project each June and part of July!Project end on July 10th--I'll be back after that!
My resident rabbit is busy chewing up everthing within reach/except for my blue salvia. I wish Mr. MacGregor lived close by. I am reading, "Consequences,' by Penelope Lively and usually like everything I've read by her but this one seems too long and long passages getting to the next happening. I will be glad to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I wonder why the goose chose that spot. It seems so open.
