Joy, happy birthday, belatedly! Hope the next year of your life is a wonderful one. (And I hope that when I'm 80, I'm still as healthy and full of life and curiosity as you are!)
Jim, it took me awhile to have an opportunity to view your pictures, but they're really cool; thanks for sharing them! It sounds like you guys had a wonderful trip, and I'm happy for you.
Hope it was happy. Nice to have that many people to celebrate with, Joy. You must read some of Adriani's books as she writes her novels about big family celebrations/Very Valentine, Brava Valentine, Lucia, Lucia etc.
Thank you all for your birthday wishes. As I said in another post, I'm still coming down from all the excitement. It will be a while before I can concentrate on my reading. Now I have to write "Thank You" cards. :)

I hope you can see these pictures Nina, but they're on the same site. Might be some browser setting, but I couldn't tell you what.
Nina, both links worked for me just now, though I haven't taken time to actually scroll through and enjoy the pictures (I plan to later). They may take a moment or two (or longer) to fully boot up, though; that was the case with my computer. Visual material tends to be a bit slower to boot up than text.
It's a gorgeous day today. I spent most of the morning fixing up the board fence. It's old & in pretty bad shape. I'd love to replace it, but don't have the money, so keep patching it. It was nice to be out in the sun & Lily was a big help. Luckily, the horses & goats weren't helping at all. More weeding & some transplanting this afternoon, then we're going riding before dinner.
Yeah! Thanks, Werner. I tried again and found the place to put my mouse and waited. It was worth the wait. Thanks Jim for sending these and most fun of all I had been to one of them, "Fingal's Cave," in Scotland.
Glad you got to see them, Nina.It hit 79 here today! Chip was sweaty & so were the insides of my legs after the ride. Shorts weather!
Just finished reading, "The Namesake," that I thought I had read before this. It turns out I hadn't read it. I think I read a novel by the same name but can't find it. I thought this book was excelent.
Nina wrote: "Tomorrow, 70 degrees; the following day, Snow.Figure!"It supposedly hit the low 80's here today, but it was so dry & windy that it didn't feel that hot. Tuesday night, possible snow followed by Wednesday morning frost warnings. Supposed to start raining here tonight into Tuesday as the front pushes through. Thursday the temps start climbing again, though.
I made the most of the nice day. I only got a few minutes in the shop tonight. I spent the morning grading around the barn, some on the lane, & cleaning up branches & trees around the woods. This afternoon was mostly spent weeding & mowing the lawn.
You made good use of the break in the weather. My husband sawed dead limbs from our crabapple. Hope the lovely Bradford pear trees that line our street don't get blasted by the freeze.
I finally finished writing my thank-you cards. Today I went to the library for the first time in months! (Ed usually goes instead of me.) The nice weather got me out of the house!
I had fun last night. A friend & I went out to a local sawmill & had a great time. Nice guys working there & we both bought some great stuff. They have a firewood pile that I plan to raid next time I want some large bowl blanks, but I'll have to bring my chainsaw with me. They said I could use theirs, but I don't like using other people's tools. I think I might get ripping blades for mine, anyway. I do a fair amount of it & they might help me get a better cut.I got out of there for under $150 & they threw in a girly calendar for free. It features some very pretty local girls fully clothed, but in some provocative poses - if you think a girl in work boots with a tape measure can be sexy. Well, I like them & it's a perfect shop calendar.
Here's the sawmill's web site. You should look at the project page. Awesome work.

Have a Happy Easter everyone. I am wondering if any children of this era would be willing to sit for three hours on Good Friday as I did as a child; not complaining. I used to give up two of my favorite things for Lent; going to the movies and drinking chocolate malted milkshakes. That I could once again induge myself with them on Easter Sunday made it even more special to me. I didn't like candy or hardboiled eggs so I never participated in an egg hunt.
Nina wrote: "Are your children still in New Zealand? Am I right as to them living there?"Well, you have the right continent, for one of them. :-) Our oldest daughter (of three) married an Aussie, and they live in his hometown of Maryborough, in the southern part of the Australian state of Queensland. The other two girls live in the U.S.; the youngest is an Army wife living in Missouri, where her husband is currently stationed, and our widowed middle daughter lives in Bluefield, WV (Bluefield, VA's "sister city," just across the state line). So far, she's the only one of the three who has kids; so this Easter, among other things, we'll be coloring and hiding/hunting Easter eggs with her four children.
Easter Sunday perfect weather here for the various egg hunts and for planting pansies which is what I did after a brunch at my daughter's home with grandkids and great grandkids. This daughter hss surgery this coming Friday/the fifth surgery on her toe to remove cancer. This time they are grating skin from the bottom of her foot onto the toe. OUCH for six weeks. Reading "The Goldfinch," that won the Pulitzer.
I spent the entire planting, transplanting, & weeding. I'm hoping we don't get a hard freeze as I'm putting in begonias, marigolds, & some other annuals as well as breaking up a lot of lilies & other perennials. I'm trying to get a good start on the place so it looks its best for Erin's wedding in July. Lots to do. I'm not halfway done with the gardens yet & still debating on whether to put mulch down or not.
Our wweather looks good for the following week/no freeze so you should be OK, hopefully. It will be a fun extrvaganza come July.
I suspect Kentucky is at it's prettiest right now. Am I right? How about where the rest of you live? Is it spring there? Here it is like a fairyland; tulips, forsythia, flowering trees line the streets and the grass is bright green; unfortunately, dandelions rear their yellow heads.
KY is very pretty now. The hyacinths & forsythia are done as are most of the daffodils, but the tulips are blooming as are the crab apples. Lots more popping up, too.
Oh, Nina, you don't like dandelions? :-( Barb doesn't either, but I think they're really beautiful --like so many golden sunbursts in the green grass. (Of course, as everyone knows who's been handed a fistful of them by an enthusiastic toddler, they don't do well as a plucked flower; they wither too quickly, like in about a half hour.) They're blooming in glorious profusion here right now, along with some other wildflowers. Here in the mountains, the cold lingers longer than it does in the lower altitudes of Virginia. It's still cold at night (sometimes in the 30s) and in the mornings, if not all day; so we don't have a lot of cultivated flowers blooming yet, though many of the flowering trees are, and our grass is also bright green. (And will soon need mowing!) It warmed up a fair bit the week of the 6th, and our neighbor's tulip tree blossomed on Palm Sunday into a vision of loveliness. Sadly, it snowed two days later, and the resulting freeze killed every bloom on it. :-(
Sorry to be so behind in my postings here. We had the family here overnight for Easter weekend. It's hard to keep up with everything these days. Hope to do better in the future! My best wishes to all.
I didn't get to finish the backyard or planting the rest of the flowers tonight since I wound up doing other things. Checking out the fields, splitting the pond's water lily, watering, & such.Marg wanted to ride through the fields so I could see how badly a flower is taking them over. I've been seeing more of them, but until she pointed it out, I hadn't realized how thick they'd gotten. They're like a short wild onion (garlic) right now, but will get a small white flower in a month or so, I think. They have a little white bulb when I dig them up. Anyone have any idea what they are? I'm going to see if 2-4-D will kill them off.
It started raining last night & has been doing so off & on all day. We had 3/4" when I got home & are still getting more. We should through tomorrow. Perfect for all the flowers I planted. I got some weeding & more planting done tonight during a break in the rain. I might actually get to the 2 banks I still have to weedeat this year. I marked the few flowers that are coming up with flags. If it dries out & there isn't any wind, I'll spray them with RoundUp & plant some cone flowers & such on them. I also have a HUGE bag (2 lbs) of wild flower seed mix to toss on there from a friend of ours works at Lowe's part time. She's paying us back for Marg helping teach her dog agility.
Stop it, Jim! LOL You're making me want asparagus! They are so good! I'll have to tell Eddie to buy some. Of course there's nothing like veggies straight from the garden. In April too! Wow!
I don't know what jarred me out of my routine this morning, but I somehow forgot my wallet, change, & pocket knife. I realized this halfway to work. Of course, I remembered the list of things I needed to pick up on my way home, but can't. Grrr.
Today is a cold, rainy type of day but because it is also my birthday there is reason to celebrate with the family tonight. At least the family that is in town. My daughter just had surgery last Friday/cancer in her toe/life threatening but the dr said they got it all this time/it's the fourth surgery and they had to graft skin from the bottom of her foot onto the toe or she would have lost it. It is the fourth surgery on this toe. She is to be off her feet entirely for six weeks. Our son from Austin, TX drove up through the tornadoes on Sunday to help out. Her husband is taking a month's leave from teaching. They are helping raise their three grandchildren. We are taking our dessert/strawberry pie, angle food cake and strawberries over to their house for my birthday dinner dessert..had lots of birthday cards and love them. Funny presents this year and so appreciated. Here's a quote for myself on this day I really like::My world is a lamp to your feet and a light for your path." Hebrews 12:28-29
Nina wrote: "Did you have your driver's license, Jim?"Nope. No money for lunch, either. I buy from the same guy all the time, so he let me slide until tomorrow, though.
So much for a nice, uneventful ride this evening. The dogs were excited about something & Chip was dancing about it, very unusual from the fat man. He calmed down once we left the woods, but after I got off him I found out that the dogs had gotten into a skunk. The wind was blowing hard & the smell was strong all the way from the other side of the woods. Lily came to me & immediately wiped her face off on my leg. Turned out all 3 of the girls got sprayed, so we spent a while washing them. We're getting too good at this. Poor Amber inhaled some & is pretty miserable. Lily has rubbed herself all over my bed trying to get the smell off. Worse, it's storming out so we can't keep the windows open. I want to sleep alone tonight!
Nina, happy birthday (belatedly), and warmest best wishes for your next year! (Your daughter will be in my prayers.)Jim, sorry about your skunk-smell situation. :-(
Not that bad, Werner. I think we've got the deskunking down to a science or else our noses have just given up.;-)
A month ago, a Canadian goose decided to nest next to my AC unit at work. This is a busy side door closest to my office, so I took pictures of the saga from beginning to nest to walking off with the goslings.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...
