No, I didn't see it, Nina.

INCREDIBLE!

I'm sitting here contemplating on what to wear to work for this in between weather.
Changed our feeder water again. Maybe we'll see a hummingbird soon.

I sprayed the lane with Gly4 (Roundup) yesterday afternoon, so it had plenty of time to get taken up by the weeds. It was a bit windy, but I really needed to get it done. I hate having to mow parts of the lane. I have enough to mow. I did the neighbor's parking area while I was at it since she doesn't have a good sprayer.
The fish pond needed some TLC. The wind was just right & managed to get under the center fountain to practically drain it. I turned the fountain way down & cleaned the filter. I found a lot of tadpoles in it. First I've seen of them this year.
I did a little weeding around it while waiting for it to fill & found the chameleon plant had come back! I thought I killed it off a couple/few years ago. Tough stuff! I wouldn't recommend planting it. Pulling it up by the roots doesn't work, so I'll have to get my RoundUp stick out & keep after it.
The night before last, I got the logs from the maple I cut down at Josh & Erin's over to the sawmill. Not a long trip. Dallas lives about a 1/2 mile down the road. He was going to charge me 40¢/board foot, but I talked him into doing it by the square foot instead. I don't know why he'd think of the former unless all he ever cuts are 1x boards. I want 5/4 & a 2x out of each log, so it would have cost me twice as much for half the cutting on the 2x. He's still making out since I just want the straight-line ripped which means he gets out of one full lengthwise cut.
I don't really want 5/4 boards, but I've bought lumber from him before & he doesn't measure thickness properly. A 1" rough cut to him includes the kerf, so the board comes out at 7/8". By the time I plane down a 7/8" rough cut board, 5/8" is all I can count on, but I should be able to get 3/4".
I'll have to stack the boards in the barn for a couple of years to dry, but it's a good deal for maple. That's running $3.50 - $4/bf at Bagdad Sawmill, so this will be about 1/10th the cost. In the meantime, I cut the butt of the biggest log off so I can get some big bowls & should get a dozen smaller ones out of some upper logs.

There's a book describing this event that I've been meaning to get around to reading, The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature, and Fowl Obsession. Has anyone read it or do you participate? I never have.

I turn bowls all the time, Linda. I generally only turn green, found wood. IOW, if I or someone else takes a tree down, I cut some logs from it & turn the bowls before the wood is dry. I generally dry the finished product in the microwave, so they can have some interesting shapes. I've been doing it for 15 years or so. They're pretty cool, if I do say so myself. You can see a few at http://jimwoodwork.com

I've never participated in the Global Big Bird Day. Only the bird count in February. Definitely will check this out!! Thanks, Jim.

You certainly are blessed with multiple talents, Jim.

'Blessed' with talents? Not hardly. I try very hard to refine those things I seem to have any ability & interest in. Many others I try to learn what I can & then quietly slink away. Anything musical seems to be beyond me. I dance like a spastic stork, sing like failing foghorn, & have no sense of rhythm.
I'm pretty good with my hands, though. I've practiced turning for 15 years & have a brush pile full of failures, but quite a few adequate projects. I've even made a few spectacular ones. It's a lot of effort, though. I've had to learn to look at a chunk of wood to judge how to cut it to turn, how thin it can be turned, & what will happen to it as it dries. I read, practice, & try various things until I'm frustrated beyond belief sometimes. The other day I made a really nice thin cherry bowl only to have the bottom break out as I was chiseling off the nib left on the base. Over an hour's work shot with one blow...

Pretty funny descriptive of your singing and dancing! A comic as well?
Ok - so the bottom of the cherry bowl broke - yet you had the talent to create a cherry bowl. I don't even have a thought of making a cherry bowl.
I still believe you are a talented person Jim.

:)
The base didn't break on the cherry bowl tonight, but I think I made it a hair too thin. I'll let it dry over night to be sure, but it might make the brush pile, too. I've taken to cutting them in half on the bandsaw or else people fish them out & keep them. That's irritating. If I think it is garbage, then it is. Marg says I'm a perfectionist, but I'm not. Every bowl has some imperfection, it's a matter of how much. I sign, date, & put the species of all my bowls on the base. I won't be remembered for junk!

I'll take a break and get some fresh air. Drive down to the Lake and see what's going on in town.

Have a good day.

:(

Looks like a beauty. Enjoy today everyone.

We had a major storm last night in Omaha---windy, hail and heavy rain. Power outages in some areas. Lots of large tree limbs down all over the city! More rain expected later tonight.

But the photo of that huge tree split in half was astonishing.

Joy and I just had very hot weather. Some nice breezes though.
Hummingbird feeder - at least pairs of males and females
Maybe more once we get some flowers which won't be until after May 30th.
