Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) First, I'm fairly ignorant.
I am shocked today because I didn't know I get 35% at KDP for sales to Australia/New Zealand (where I live). I thought that was only in a few territories... like India. Have found the list where the 70% goes -- and it's a pretty short list!

Has this changed? Did I just manage to be unaware?

There I was, happy that fellow Australians had bought my book. And I earn next to nothing. I earn so much more from other shops (Smashwords and where it distributes). What am I meant to do, tell people 'don't buy from Amazon for God's sake, I won't see a penny'.

Scott Marlowe (scottmarlowe) 35% is still pretty good. Personally, I think Amazon is going to move to a 70% royalty rate only if you're in KDP Select across the board for all territories. I hope I'm wrong.

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) Me too - I fear that. I expect that.
It's better than if you're trad-published, I grant you, but 35% feels pathetic against the percentages you get everywhere else.

Scott Marlowe (scottmarlowe) Definitely not as good as 70%! :-)

John (jaymack) | 45 comments My sales are less with Smashwords but I make about the same amount of money, because Smashwords pays a higher royalty. That 35% is pathetic. Writers feel they have to accept that because Amazon has such a larger audience, but, like I said, it all evens out for me because Smashwords pays more per book.
