SOLVED. Horror, homeless man crushed in compactor [s]

I remember reading it when I was 11/12. It had to do with a possessed skyscraper and the horror the people inside had to deal with. There was the homeless guy who was trying to get out of the snow so he climbed into a trash compactor behind the building, something about vending machines going crazy, I possessed business man and his secretary. It had to have been released before 1992.

Was it a novel or a short story? It sounds like something Patricia Highsmith might write. Possessed skyscrapers also make me think of J.G. Ballard, who did write a dystopic horror novel about one, but there was no homeless guy crushed in a trash compactor. I don't know if Ballard wrote short stories.
