Zuzi | 30 comments Yeah that's possible! I just think that he somehow wanted to use Celaena to get more power. I mean - don't tell me that a man like him (all vicious and ambitious :D) would save her just because he felt bad for her or wanted to train a new assassin..

message 52: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 12 comments Another random/far fetch idea, Elena said that Celaena was chosen to be raised as an assassin for a reason.. What if Arobynn is being fed by the old queen and they needed to kill Sam or she would have never done what she needed to do if he was alive.. I mean the queen told Nehemia "Then do you understand what I am asking of you” Nehemia says yes so the queen said “Then do what needs to be done” Elena isn't above doing anything to get Celaena or Dorian to follow the path to freeing everyone

I feel bad for Celaena because everyone is pushing her down some path and none of those paths are of her choosing.. Even if she chooses to embrace Aelin, there were events that lead up to that point that people made her go down against her will

message 53: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 18 comments I just finished reading the novellas. Oh Sam, it gutted me. :'( But also how did Celaena find out about Arobynn's betrayal? I can't recall reading the specifics in the TOG books. Am I missing something?

message 54: by Ale (new)

Ale (bookishunicorn) I've been wondering the same thing since I read Heir of Fire! I was so confused when the narrator said that she knew it was Arobynn, because in CoM she still did not know it was his fault (from what I remember)

message 55: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 18 comments Yes me too! I read Heir of Fire (IT WAS AMAZING BTW) just before I started the novellas. Actually, HOF was the reason I even reached for the prequels. I wanted to get to know Sam and Arobynn. Especially since Arobynn will most probably be part of Queen of Shadows. :D YAY!

Comment from Amba from the first page. Yes, I totally agree with you Amba that it was foolish for Arobynn to train Aelin as an assassin and give her all those skills. But then again, Arobynn's not foolish.
And I also think it's very possible that Arobynn's against Adarlan. Because he knows who Celaena/Aelin really is, so he could have made her a deadly assassin and then she can use her skills and power to overthrow Adarlan. Then he could say that she's in his debt because he taught her all those fighting skills. Maybe he could then gain political power or a lot of money from the heir of Terrasen. But that doesn't explain why he was so cruel to her and why he made sure she hated him.

message 57: by Serena (new)

Serena | 160 comments And by the Wyrd I plead that Arobynn doesn't know Aelin's amulet is a Wyrdkey. If he knows and got ahold of its power, I can't begin to fathom what he would do. Maybe even deeds worse than that of the King of Adarlan??
Arobynn is so calculating he's not even human. He manipulates everyone for his own selfish purposes. He's obviously ambitious and money-loving; I wouldn't put it past him to want to rule the world. And if he found a way to use the Wyrdkey and overthrow the royal Havilliard family, Wyrd help us all.

To prepare her for her rule as Aelin seems like a good reason. He must know that if she ever decided to claim her kingdom and her crown, Adarlan/the King won't be easy to deal with. He thinks so many steps ahead that sometimes I feel it chips away at his humanity, to ensure that his 'investment' is secured he'd go the distance.

Or maybe he's just a horrible person.

message 59: by Giada (new)

Giada MMMh I'm not so sure... He is enough selfish. I think he saw her like his belongings and get jealous about Sam. Perhaps he got crazy when Sam and Aelin had lived together, because he thought they had sex........... And when Chaol will say him that he took her "innocence", a gooooood brawl. And Aelin will help Chaol to survive this... AHAHAHAH
I imagine a dialogue like this

Arobynn: You was mine. And that miserable son of a bitch took you away, away from me. He touched you, kissed you..here under my fortress. And then he ripped your virginity. You was mine..

Aelin: X_X

Chao:Actually.. I did..

message 60: by Giada (new)

Giada And I have another theory about developments. Does anyone remember, in the first Novella at the beginning one of the older Assassins was dead. He was a paternal figure for Aelin.. and Sam on the Pirate's Island said that for him was a trap organized by Arobynn. A coincidence?? This man, Sam....Lysandra too! We'll see the motivation of Arobynn in QoS and than I thing that Aelin got off!!!

message 61: by Ale (new)

Ale (bookishunicorn) Yeah, but we never got a moment where Celaena said "Oh, I think it was Arobynn who planned everything". It was more hints for us the readers than to Celaena.

message 62: by Giada (new)

Giada In CoM she was not sure that it was Arobynn. She wanted not to realize, to think about that days. But she had always a suspect about him

message 63: by Ale (new)

Ale (bookishunicorn) I know, I meant to say how is she so sure that it was Arobynn?

message 64: by Giada (new)

Giada In CoM when she talked to Chaol she is more sure that it was Arobynn. When she heard of Weslyn and thought that he tried to suggest her it was a trap.. She put just more point together. But a confession or a prove she has not. Just a good one suspicious
And in the first chapter of QoS she reads under the words of Arobynn..

message 65: by Ale (new)

Ale (bookishunicorn) Ohh, you're right. Thank you!

Jenn | 18 comments Giada wrote: "MMMh I'm not so sure... He is enough selfish. I think he saw her like his belongings and get jealous about Sam. Perhaps he got crazy when Sam and Aelin had lived together, because he thought they h..."

OMG Giada, I laughed so hard at that. You was mine. But you could be right.

Also, did anyone notice in HoF that when Chaol visited her apartment, it was stated The secret apartment above the warehouse was untouched, though someone had taken the time to cover the ornate furniture.

I'm guessing that was Arobynn, still not able to let Celaena go after she went to Endovier.

message 67: by Giada (new)

Giada Ahaha. I want more Arobynn! I love this character and I want to discover more about his feeling to Aelin. So a brawl with Aedion or Chaol will be awesome!!!! I don't believe, Aelin will kill him. Or maybe not alone. I think it will Chaol. In HoF he said it was her choice to not kill him after she became paladin.. But he had killed yet for her, to save her.

message 68: by Giada (new)

Giada and for the apartment I also believe it was Arobynn. He thought she could survive to Endovier. Or just to preserve something of her. to remember

message 69: by Ale (new)

Ale (bookishunicorn) I agree Giada! I want more Aelin/Arobynn moments.

message 70: by Liz (new)

Liz | 172 comments Guys, if you read the Qos preview, do you think Arobynn was telling the truth when he confessed to Aelin? I mean he's obviously a terrible person, but do you think he believed that he was telling the truth.

Or do you guys think it's just another tactic in the game that he's playing with Aelin?

message 71: by Giada (new)

Giada what truth??

message 72: by Ale (new)

Ale (bookishunicorn) Did you mean when he said he loved her and missed her?

message 73: by Liz (new)

Liz | 172 comments Yeah, that bit.

message 74: by Ale (new)

Ale (bookishunicorn) Well, the romantic lover that I am wants to believe he is telling the truth, but he is Arobynn Hamel so... I don't really want to believe him.

message 75: by Liz (new)

Liz | 172 comments I get it. I kind of think that Arobynn will say or do anything to keep AeIin by his side and it's not like she's physically unattractive. He does probably want her.

message 76: by Ale (new)

Ale (bookishunicorn) When Sarah said this book was going to be steamy I immediately thought we are going to get more Arobynn/Aelin moments so I'm kind of scared because he is so... Him. Crap.

message 77: by Liz (new)

Liz | 172 comments O.o I'm really hoping she was talking about side character action.

message 78: by Ale (new)

Ale (bookishunicorn) I hope so

message 79: by Giada (new)

Giada steamy? More action or mpre passion? Both please

message 80: by Ale (new)

Ale (bookishunicorn) If its both i'm not going to complain entirely about it c:

message 81: by Liz (new)

Liz | 172 comments Both is good :3

message 82: by Zuzi (new)

Zuzi | 30 comments I really can't wait for more Arobynn moments but I am still very confused by this character..Does he love her? Did he just want to be like a guardian to her? Or did he just want to use her? I mean by some things that he said (like I don't like sharing my belongings) it seemed like his feelings were not real... And you know what? I would not even mind if he was truly a villain in the upcoming books! Just for one simple reason - everyone loves Aelin (except the king:D) - Aedion, Chaol, Rowan, Dorian... It would be a nice change to have someone who has no good intention with her.

message 83: by Giada (new)

Giada Live is too much for him. I think he doesn't know what it means. But for her... He knows the words possession and jealousy and obsession and so. But I don't think he will betray her again. But they are broken and she will discover everything he did against her. And Lysandra... I don't know why but I imagine her like an alley to Aelin. After what Arobynn did against her (and we don't know what yet) a femminine altruism.

message 84: by Giada (new)

Giada *love sorry

message 85: by Noris (new)

Noris | 574 comments Agree about Lyssandra. There's a chance of she and Aelin becoming friends. Arobyn... No... He's so so so damn evil... Wicked and clever that no, he betrayed her once, he'll do it a thousand times again.

message 86: by Serena (new)

Serena | 160 comments I agree, Arobynn wouldn't hesitate to betray anyone for his own selfish reasons.

message 87: by Giada (new)

Giada Maybe.. But I imagine a epic fight Arobynn with Aedion or Chaol! Aylin had to see, how much they would sacrifice, fight for her....

message 88: by Noris (new)

Noris | 574 comments I've always think that it would be Aedion or Rowan who kill Arobyn. I like to think about Rowan using his sword against Arobyn's heart just while he's telling him everything what Aelin has told his carranam about her life. Imagine! That would be a slap in Arobyn's face. May be Alin kinda loved Sam and Chaol... But no, she never trusted them in the same way she trusts Rowan. Is the main prove that shows Arobyn that he's for not longer the only one that knows everything about her

message 89: by Giada (new)

Giada Mmmh I'm not sure that chaol can win agains arobynn. But rowan or aedion, that's another story. but I think it will be aedion.

message 90: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 18 comments I think to an extent Arobynn does love Aelin, so much so that he himself believes that he does. But I feel that if push comes to shove, he'd save his own skin. That being said, I hope that he doesn't get killed by the other guys because he betrayed Aelin again. I want to see a redemption arc even if it's just a tiny bit of him being selfless for a second (eventually he will die because he deserves it). Haha

As for Aelin's other love interests, I'm not sure if a bond can be solidified now since there will be up to 6 books altogether and we're only halfway through. It's like in each book there's a new potential love interest. I can't wait to see who Sarah will bring in this time in QoS.

message 91: by Giada (new)

Giada I think he wants her. at the end of the novellas he said the she is one his belonging. And in these first three chapter of QoS she felt uncomfortable with his gaze that had nothing of a brother o father's gaze. He wants her. But he doesn't love her. He is possessiv to her, he wanted to be all for her. A father a brother a teacher a friend and a lover. As I red the first novella I had the doubt that Arobynn killed the other Assassin, who was for her like a uncle, protectiv friendly, just because of jealousy. He felt her owner. So when she and sam get in love, he was furious because she was gone, she left the fortress and left him to be free and with Sam. He couldn't bare that as a treason. And to make her suffer and for revenge against Sam, who had taken away one of his belonging, he killed him.

Alice (Booksandfreshlybrewedtea) (earthtoalice) | 46 comments Marium wrote: "@Giada...yess I thought the same abt Ben being killed. I'd a feeling Arobynn had a hand in this."

I THOUGHT THAT TO! when i reread the first novella, sam seemed to think the same to

Arobynn may have done because he knew would be agasint using slaves and cel would be too. so remove her ally? or they were getting to close for this comfort. he seems to like taking things from her that could potentially make her not as loyal to him?

message 93: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (jabberwockyslayer) | 171 comments He seems possessive of her in such a way that he has fooled himself into thinking he owns her. In a strange way, he probably loves her. He practically raised her after all. The man is demented and sadistic. I have no doubt he is the reason that Sam is dead. In QOS, Aelin is going to have to play a tricky game to get anywhere with him.

message 94: by Ana (new)

Ana | 10 comments Honestly, I really want Aelin to kill Arobynn...and in a very painful way. Maybe I just lack compassion, but I truly hate Arobynn after what he did to Sam, so I don't care whether he loves Aelin or not, he doesn't deserve her or even deserve to love her. I think if there's ever a time for Aelin's dark, violent side to come out again, it should be punishing Arobynn. I just think it would be anticlimatic for me to have someone else kill Arobynn, his death and pain should be reserved for Aelin. If not, I want revenge for the pain he put me through just reading the last novella.

message 95: by Serena (new)

Serena | 160 comments Totally agree with you Ana.

message 96: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Arobynn confuses me so much. Didn't he say to that asshole Farran (the guy who tortured and killed Sam) at the end of The Assassin and the Empire that he originally planned to rescue Celaena from the royal dungeons but then he didn't and he didn't rescue her from being taken to Endovier either. What is his intention?! I'm so confused. The only motive I can think of is that he hated that Celaena was standing up to him and leaving along with Sam because he feels she's in his eternal debt for what he did for her so he had Sam killed and did that to Celaena. Great character though very cunning and manipulative, I do like those kinds of characters. I just wish I could understand what Arobynn's motive was. I do hope in comes down to a fight between Celaena and Arobynn. Imagine when Celaena finds out he's the one who betrayed her. Ohh she's so gonna want to rip Arobynn's eyes out.

message 97: by Alexis (last edited Jul 14, 2015 06:45PM) (new)

Alexis (TigeroftheTowerGuard) | 356 comments He planned to rescue her from the executioners block. She would owe him her life. Saving her from going to Endovier would have left less of an impression on her. Least that's my take on it. As far as Arobynn was concerned, Celaena belonged to him and nobody else, not even herself. That's why he conspired with Farran to have Sam killed.

"...After another moment of quiet, he(Farran) asked, "Why did you do it?" Arobynn's attention drifted back to the wagon, already a small dot in the rolling foothills above Rifthold. "Because I don't like sharing my belongings."..."

Arobynn deserves to die at Celaena's hands just like Grave in CoM. No, worse than that. I don't know. Either way, a quick clean death is way to good for that bastard.

message 98: by Jess S (new)

Jess S (mintchip) | 267 comments Arobynn is an Assassin/Businessman first.

He's psycho & he cant understand let alone feel love its a tool to him and nothing else!

What do we know about Arobynn:
He loves only himself
He's Cruel
Cunning
Overpossessive
Manipulative
He knows Secrets = Leverage + Power = Control.

Hence, creating Celaena & hiding her amulet. They are leverage over the King & Aelin. Heck he might even know its 1 of 3 Keys which as we have learned wield terrible power!
Arobynn & the slave trade. I think way back when Arobynn, as a business man, knew the KofA was looking for a great supply of slaves to build up Calculla and Endovier and Arobynn wanted to broker that deal with the Pirate king so the King would come to him as the major supplier of slaves. But when Celaena disrupted that trade deal Arobynn had no choice but to team up with KofA & that lady from Melissand instead of becoming the sole supplier and thats why he was mad at Celeana, bec. he wanted the King to need him for slaves not partner with him on the slave supply. He wound up with less power over the king and less profit because of that deal breaker. But he still has the secret of the missing heir so he prob figures at that point he was still slightly ahead in the struggle for power/uneasy alliance. (I also suspect that Arobynn had Gregori kill his best friend Ben. Ben seemed like too nice a guy to actually agree to the slavery deal and so Arobynn had him sent to the grave. Probably couldnt even do it himself, the selfish coward.)

You guys are right he bought Lysandra with Celeanas debt money just to annoy her. He totally took advantage of Celaenas trust by dangling an assignment that she thought was meant to stop the slave trade when it really only furthered the sanctioning of it just to punish her for messing up his business deal. AND remember those 3 guys Celeana says she had seen before well she ran into a mans chest(his next 3 clients) right after she got done telling Arobynn she bought an appartment, but was moving out...by that point Arobynn had ALREADY set his kill Sam plan into motion with Farren. He probably met Farren on the rooftops the night before she told him she was moving out! He totally used that time she was in the Red Desert to come up with the plan to broker the slave trade deal and come up with his plan to give her that twisted assignment. I think the whole killing Sam plan was designed on the fly since once she returned he noticed how close they had gotten and probably expected Sam would reveal his feelings or leave like he said. (neither of which Arobynn would allow)

Now Arobynn QoS. He is totatlly waiting for her to come to him. Now that she's practicaly declared herself she's gonna want her necklace back. But he also knows the Kings becoming to powerful and he needs someone to do the dirty work so he can gain some control over the city again. At this point he needs Aelin more than he needs to screw with her. It wouldnt make good business sense.
As for him not contacting her when she returned from Endovier it says 1 of 2 things (its actually flattering): A. He didnt contact her bec. he figured she'd put the pieces of the puzzle together and they'd point straight to him...so he was actually acknowleging she is strong enough to defeat him. B. He was cocky and thought he didnt need her anymore so he basically turned her over to the King & they threw her like a piece of trash into the mines... remember it wasnt until AFTER Arobynn hears about the Fire-Breathing-Bitch-Queen that he even deemed her worthy/useful enough to meet up with her again OR he either thought I'll rescue her after some time so she'll see me as a hero. I think at this point in the series he's losing all his leverage and power he's realized the secret of the lost Heir is soon to be moot and the King has 2 keys and now has way too much power for comfort it wont be long before he starts pulling Arobynns strings and is asking him to dance. For a man like Arobynn who likes to be incontrol he's realized he's fast becoming a puppet instead of mutual partner.

I did actually consider that Arobynn just expected Aelin to fall in love with him eventually and at that point he might have oh so graciously have agreed that she should take her kingdom back and marry him (like oh ok I'll guess I'll be a king for you Celeana) lol. Self centered a$$!

What worries me is...why does Arobynn want that collared person..do you think he knows he has a key and he wants the collared person to see if he could turn the tides and control the collared person?!!!

message 99: by Ale (new)

Ale (bookishunicorn) I have no clue on to why he wants the someone with a collar on. Like, now Aelin has told him that it posseses dark magic so why does he still want it? He is so strange and we really don't know his intentions so I guess we'll find out in Queen of Shadows.

message 100: by Stacy (new)

Stacy | 58 comments So, I am just going to through this out there:

What if Arrobyn is trying to create his own collars? I remember from CoM that Arrobyn told Archer about Celeana. The question is why? And where did Archer learn about wryd marks? I am wondering if Arrobyn saw the markings on the back of Celeana's amulet and began researching what they were. I don't know if he knows what he has or not, but Archer kept up with his training at the assassin keep, and Celeana said that she had a crush on him while he was there and that he would let her test out her flirting skills. What if Arrobyn would of seen that and tried to use Archer as a way to get Celeana in check. Also were did the King learn about wryd marks? And what happened to that book that pops up out of no where with teaching on wryd marks? I am wondering if Arrobyn gets his hands on a collar if he would try to duplicate it and ...... Trap Celeana in one to try to have her in his control again.

Crazy thought, huh......
