So I read this book at least 5 years ago, so it can't be that new. I thought originally that Mercedes Lackey wrote it, but I've gone through her bibliography and none fit the description.

What I remember is that it centered on a girl in a small village in a fantasy world. In that village your purpose is decided by the rolling of these stones or bones or runes (can't quite remember which). The roll reflects the strongest traits of your personality. So some combination of symbols rolled might suggest that you should be a farmer or a blacksmith, etc. I think. Anyways, the main character girl gets a rare reading called "Heart". It means its very easy for her to manipulate others or she can use her "skill/power/purpose" for good. So maybe it's a special skill in empathy? I think I remember that she left her village and home, but that's all I remember. Help! Thank you.
