Yes the magic system really made the book I thought.
Finished: WarbreakerTime to take a break from the alphabet for a while to read: Doctor Sleep which I've been waiting for all year and then Speaker for the Dead so that I'll be ready for my X book: Xenocide
Sarah wrote: "What did you think to Warbreaker Marcus?"I thought it was a good first attempt. The magic system was pretty cool and the pseudo-twist at the end was fun. I'd be interested to see if Sanderson revisits this world at some point in the future.
Well, after a fairly brief break from the alphabet to take in Doctor Sleep which was somewhat disappointing and Speaker for the Dead which was pleasantly surprising, it's back to the challenge for my X book: Xenocide

I'm working to get through my c book so I can read it for d. What didn't you like about it Marcus?
Marcus wrote: "Well, after a fairly brief break from the alphabet to take in Doctor Sleep which was somewhat disappointing and Speaker for the Dead which was pleasantly surprising, it's back to the challenge for ..."I'm reading The Shining at the moment so I can then move on to Doctor Sleep - I've heard a few mixed views on it too.
Well, I think Doctor Sleep is an ok book if you go into it with the expecation that while there are references to The Shining, the styles of the two are nothing alike. This is to be expected as Stephen King has obviously changed as an author over the decades (the grit that was present in his early works has significantly declined with his recovery from alcoholism and in my opinion following his accident many years ago which likely had a dramatic psychological impact as well). I still love almost everything that King writes and was very pleased with his recent works: Joyland and The Wind Through the Keyhole so I had high expecations for Doctor Sleep as well. My problems with the book were that I felt that the idea was somewhat rushed and therefore not fully developed. The characters were pretty superficial, the danger/tension never felt real to me (the main characters never seemed to be in real danger), and the main plot events were very predictable. There was nothing new presented here.
But it's just my opinion so you should def decide on your own...but as a life-long Stephen King fan, I expected a bit more.
Just finished my X book: XenocideOn to Y: Ysabel which I had no idea was a YA book but I guess that means it won't take very long before I wrap up the alphabet with Zoe's Tale
Finished: YsabelSince there is quite a bit of year left and only one more book for my alphabet challenge, I'm going to try and read the preceding novels in the Old Man's War series including the title book, The Ghost Brigades, and The Last Colony before I begin Zoe's Tale
Thanks Marcus. I had no idea that there were 3 other books in that series. Have you read Old Man's War before?
Rusalka wrote: "Thanks Marcus. I had no idea that there were 3 other books in that series. Have you read Old Man's War before?"Nope but since it was nominated for multiple awards, I am very much looking forward to it :)
Hope you enjoy. It's a favourite of Sword and Laser and on their recommendation I got it for Lexx a while ago. He seemed to enjoy it. It's still on my TBR though... one day...
Janice wrote: "I'm jealous! You have one book left and I have way too many. LOL!"No worries....lot's of time left :)

It's not too heady to lengthy so it's the kind of book that you can pick up when you have a little spare time and the element of humor so far is great. I've laughed out loud a couple times already.
Well...I enjoyed the first three books of the Old Man's War series so much that I blew through them in about a week and am now starting the last book in my alphabet challenge:Zoe's Tale
I am planning to take my time with this one (kinda) and am gearing up to read some books that have been sitting on my shelf for a while to fill up the next couple of months until the new challenge is revealed. I'll probably try and participate in some monthly challenges and topplers if my books fit in with the themes. Time for some Halloween reading:
Horns, Locke and Key, Vol. 4: Keys to the Kingdom, Valentine's Exile, and Valentine's Resolve
Well...I've finished! All done with Z book: Zoe's TaleTime to kick back and eagerly await the challenge/s for 2014. Thanks for a really fun one this year mods :)
I'm glad you enjoyed the challenge, Marcus! Congrats on completing it with a couple of months to spare.
Are you going to read the 5th book in the Scalzi Old Man's War series
?I just finished
for the G book in my second alphabet. I really liked the 1st 2 books in this series. I just hate buying books right now (because of an upcoming move) and our libraries here don't have the other books in the series. They didn't have the 1st 2 either but I went ahead and purchased them because I really wanted to read them.
So glad for you for having finished your alphabet and with time to spare, Marcus. I am not sure at this point time that I am going to finish mine, but at least I have plenty of books to read. :)

..."For sure. I really enjoyed the first three books in the series and book four was decent. I really like the universe that Scalzi has created.

Thanks, Marcus. I DO have some interesting books comming up, I just do not know if I will have time to finish them all. I was side-tracked by a few re-reads and the time that I spent doing it. All good though - they WERE good reads. :D
Grats Marcus! Glad you finished it with a series you enjoyed and are keen to follow on with. Can't ask for more than that!!
Woo Hoo Marcus! That's great that you finished in time to get some other books in this year. I loved Horns, hope you enjoy it.
