I have 10 books on my list... suggestions for recent fiction if I want to avoid sex, vampires and murder? LOL Nothing too fluffy... I like stuff with a bit of drama. Thanks!

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - historicalThe Racketeer - the latest Grisham, sooo good
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry - a terrific, heartwarming read with drama
Small Island - historical
I hope you enjoy some or all! :)
What are some of your favorite books?Without knowing anything about your literary tastes, except for the fact that you don't want sex, vampires, or murder, I'd recommend:
Gone with the Wind ... although I guess that one takes place in the Civil War ... does that count as murder?
Pride and Prejudice
Still Alice
The Help
Oops, my profile is private. some of my favorites are the help Pride and Prejudice Memoirs of a Geisha The Little Giant of Aberdeen County... modern fiction historical fiction and Christian fiction are all safe bets. currently reading Emma.
I couldn't get into the potato peel book and I should read gone with the wind sometime. The Herald Fry book sounds interesting.thanks. I actually like The Hunger Games trilogy a lot but I always get in a funk after I read about murders or death and I just finished Little Giant so I need a break from it.
First off, TBR shelves can shrink??? ;)Ella Minnow Pea it was really cute, a make you happy kind of book.
I am the Messenger
Life of Pi
Juliet some murder and mayhem, but mostly a historical mystery
Chasing Fireflies
Mistress Shakespeare
The History of Love
People of the Book
The Twentieth Wife
The Ladies Auxiliary
Hope some of those strike your fancy.
The Guernsey book, I almost abandoned because it was a slow starter. I'm glad I stuck with it though, as it's an all-time favorite now. It's got a black-and-white movie feel to it. I'm like you, I prefer to explore feelings rather than sex in books. Different strokes, the book may not be for you, but I wound up loving it so much that I wanted to let you know. I'll say it took me about 40 pp to get sucked in, but if you're an old-fashioned romantic, you might just love it.
Laura - there IS a made for TV movie out years ago based on this story. The book actually came?? probably later. I believe it was a Masterpiece Theater piece called Islands At Warhttp://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/i...

Hi Nancy, I think that's slightly different. The film for the book comes out this year, apparently.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1289403/
Yes - however the locale of the story and the historical basis are similar. Yes - this book is newer - and that should be a good movie by the looks :^)
Books by Elizabeth Gaskell (such as Wives and Daughters) are very nice, if you like the genre. I recently read Do They Hear You When You Cry by Fauziya Kassindja and even though it is non-fiction, it brings some (understatement) real-life drama to the table, without murder, sex etc.etc. Same category: The Good Women of China: Hidden Voices
I also enjoyed The House of Blue Mangoes: A Novel, Rooftops of Tehran, Kaaterskill Falls and Purple Hibiscus. Can't remember any elaborate sex scenes in these books, and they might bring a bit of a different (exotic) flavor to you tbr list ;)
I'd vote for The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society too. It's a while since I read it, so I don't remember it being a slow start. And I recently finished The Mirrored World. Reviews have been very mixed but it certainly pulled me in to 18thC Russia.Wish my TBR shelf would shrink a teensy bit! ;0
Thank you ladies! And apologies for the crazy posts... my talk to text feature is a real dummy at times.
I never knew TBR lists actually shrink.. Mine always seems to keep growing and growing... I am always adding books because there is so much I would like to read.
