How do you think about Elizabeth's being attracted to Mr Wickham?

Sandy Being handsome is so important, even to a girl like Elizabeth. Lizzy was attracted to George when she knew nothing about him at all.

johanna (jo) I think he was a weasel. A scoundrel.

Redd Kaiman I think it really shows how first impressions can actually be deceiving.

Yes, that's also the reason why we're worried about Lydia's future...

Stephen Whaley I knew that he was going to be trouble.

Allen James Despite the character of Lizzy being designed to reflect and support the author's disapproval with the Regency Era's "rules" in general regarding women, money, family; Elizabeth's attraction to Wickham display's not only her vulnerability but as well allows the reader to realize she is not "superhuman". Lizzy's world view may be "bolder" than women of her era, but her humanness remains; she finds herself attracted to a man who exemplifies the type of man an average woman of the Regency Era would be attracted to whereas the beginning line of the novel regarding men with money MUST be searching for a wife sets the tone of this satirical novel.

I totally agree with you, I somehow had a feeling, but in all fairness he was handsome and lovely to Lizzie and she didn't know his true character, so I would have probably been a bit infatuated with him too ^^

Victoria Scofield He seemed off to me from the start and then there was Darcy's reaction to him (I liked Darcy even before I knew anything about the story). Plus he automatically started bad-mouthing Darcy behind the man's back and no one thinks to question it even though they don't really know either man. Besides, Bingley wouldn't be friends with Darcy if he were a bad guy; Bingley's too nice.

I'm usually right when I smell a rat in movies and books. I concede that he's handsome, but I found Darcy and Bingley better looking. Obviously, Wickham's going to chase the girl Darcy wants. She just happened to be pretty and witty to boot, so there were perks.

Lizzy most likely would've liked Darcy better from the start if he hadn't made that stupid comment at the ball and if he weren't aloof (I've had problems in the past due to being reticent as well, but haven't had a problem since I learned to open my mouth). Wickham's good at charming women and people in general while Darcy fails at that.

Kressel Housman He was a charmer, and she was flattered by the attention. I also strongly believe that he went for her because he knew Darcy was attracted to her. The first time she met him, Jane was talking to Bingley with Darcy in tow. That's when the two enemies saw each other. Lizzy picked up on their hostility, but what did Wickham pick up from Darcy toward her? Remember, they grew up together, and Wickham would have every motivation to torment him. "Oh, so this is the one you like? Well, watch this!"

Oh no, I think Mr. Wickham was attracted by Elizabeth because of Elizabeth's charm. See Chapter 27.
His (Mr. Wickham's) present pursuit (to Miss King) could not make him forget that Elizabeth had been the first to excite and to deserve his attention.

Abby I feel that Wickham just really knows how to control people's emotions.

Also what's up with that line where Mr. Bennet says that Wickham is his favorite. That really confused me.

I really really think he was being ironic ^^

Krista D. Mr. Bennet loved silliness and knowing he was right about people being foolish. That's why he kept up Mr. Collins's correspondence; he loved the absurd.

Agree. :)
Chapter 24:
Let Wickham be your man. He is a pleasant fellow, and would JILT you creditably.

Zayne K. I liked Wickham's letter to Elizabeth, but he is very manipulative.

What an interesting point! Although I think he found her attractive for her own merits, and the fact that she ate up his mean stories about Darcy, that's an angle I had never considered. Hm.

Sandy Elizabeth was like many other girls.
Chapter 36:
Pleased with the preference of one, and offended by the neglect of the other.

Anna Wickham was a slimeball who wormed his way into people's affections through deception. Unfortunately, but humanly, Lizzie fell for it. He was handsome (I never thought so), and he hated Darcy just as much as Lizzie did. He offered her vindication for her hatred of Darcy. They had something in common, and that was probably the only thing.
Slimeball.

Good, that's the point!

Emma I think if I was her I would've been attracted to him (at first) as well. He was handsome, and was an amiable person. Of course after I heard about who he really was, I would really dislike him. I just think initially, any woman would be attracted to him because of his good manners and his handsomeness.

Michele Of course Wickham was a weasel, but a very charming weasel. A charming and immoral rake, with no moral code.
