Jen (squall88uk) | 4 comments My apologies for the vague thread title but wasn't sure how to describe this one properly.

While adding a quote for Ben Aaronovitch i noticed that the dropdown list where you select which book the quote is from only displays Midnight Riot and not Rivers of London. For those of you that don't know they are the same book, Rivers of London is the UK title and Midnight Riot is the US title. Now, being from the UK and since the author is from the UK i would have liked to be able to select Rivers of London but the only option is Midnight Riot. How do i add Rivers of London to the dropdown list?

lafon حمزة نوفل (lafon) | 3544 comments Short answer: you can't.

Longer answer: Due to the way Goodreads' combine system is set up, the default edition (which is usually the edition added most by members) is the one shown on quotes, author pages, series pages etc.

Because the quote system is for a work, not a particular edition, there isn't really a problem with having the most popular edition as default. Besides, aside from title and cover, the content of the books are the same, no?

Jen (squall88uk) | 4 comments I agree that it isn't exactly a big issue. It's more of a niggle. I added the quote so it would display on my profile page in my quotes section. Being from the UK if a friend of mine from the UK also view my profile they're more likely to recognise what book the quote is from if they can see the title they know rather than one they weren't aware of. As i said not a big issue just a niggle.

EDIT: Although you would think that Goodreads would be intelligent enough to decide which edition i would know based on my location information that it has for me. I don't just mean with quotes either, i mean that it should be able to display the most relevant edition automatically when viewing a book based on your location.

Changes are often made from British English to American English, which is only a problem if you are trying to add an exact quote. Do you use the original words as written, or the words as presented in the most popular edition? (Assuming that the book was edited for Americans; not all are.)

That is true. In this particular case the spelling etc would be the same, but i know exactly what you mean.

lafon حمزة نوفل (lafon) | 3544 comments Good point. I had forgotten about that. I haven't had to read both a Canadian and a British edition of the same book yet, so it doesn't really cross my radar.

Banjomike | 5166 comments If anyone wants to see just how bad the conversion from British edition to American edition can be, they should try to get hold of the US Fawcett/Crest edition of The Day of the Triffids and compare it to the UK Penguin edition. The correct way to describe the US edition would be "censored".

Jen (squall88uk) | 4 comments I still think that goodreads should be able to show whats relevant based on the information it has for your location. It would make things a lot easier in terms of displaying the correct title, cover etc.

That would probably cure a lot of ills (edition language, etc.). I think it might screw me and a few others up who live outside of US but primarily purchase US editions, though. :p

General "I wish GR did thinks like this" comments are better in the Feedback Group. Please try to keep threads here focused on things that librarians have the ability to fix.

(The initial thread was fine, but some of the later posts wandered too far afield.)
