What are the core narrative themes of The Deer Park? From what I understand, Mailer was combining social satires of recognizable American types and socio-political commentary of contemporary America. Are there any American writers who do this sort of thing nowadays?

I read the book, but can't quite think of another author who is/was terribly similar. The book was written in the mid-50s so I can't really comment on how it fits into the contemporaneous times. Seemed like a knock on Hollywood. I didn't think it was very good, but was worth the couple hours it takes to read it.
