What are the content caveats? I'm waffling about reading it right now.

M F (fianaigecht) | 247 comments Katie: I read it a couple of weeks ago. His style is interesting and I like how he plays with genre :) Also he writes intriguing female characters.

Finished The Blue Blazes! Now I need a book to take to Paris with me...

@Aubrey: Yes, I've encountered those. *wry face*

@Leah: Some adult content scenes between two of the main characters. They kind of escalate as the plot progresses.

Joe (yebard) | 34 comments I'm on another Terry Prachett binge i'm suppose to be reading some non fiction books and finishing up Harry Potter and the deathly hallows but I can't seem to get enough of the disworld.

message 1305: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth I've got They Were Expendable by William L. White and No Highway by Nevil Shute waiting for me at the library. I really enjoyed the movie versions of both, so I'm looking forward to reading them. Also have Linnets and Valerians by Elizabeth Goudge on request.

Katie Daniels | 242 comments I just finished Princess of the Midnight Ball and put "Princess of Glass" on hold. I'm interested to see more of the author's work. Moving onto Flavia de Luce now--print books are renewable and ebooks are not. Dresden will just have to wait.

message 1307: by [deleted user] (new)

Aha! I'm not the only person who watches the movie before reading the book! *winks at Elisabeth* ;)

Oh, Annie, regarding your comment about rereading Red Rain... I've got only one thing to say: <3 you ;)

My main issue with Divergent is that the sexual content, while never truly explicit, was not only distasteful, but it felt detached from the story. Roth had a very strong dystopian story going, only to throw in sudden bouts of steamy romance which, in many places, felt forced into the plot. It didn't mesh fully, which made it further annoying. Here's my review, which gives a few more specifics: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Olivia Cornwell I've been reading book 3 of the Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart. I've had it on my shelf for a while, and going back to these clever characters feels like I'm rejoining old friends. It feels nice. ^_^ Also, I think the creepy/suspenseful factor was boosted by ten. Few books make me sigh with relief when I realize that whoever was approaching the hideout is a good guy.

Now I just need to hope I have a long car ride this year so I can marathon the Supervillain books...

message 1309: by [deleted user] (new)

YUS! Someone else who's joining the Supervillain fanclub! They're great for getting a few easy books in, too, as they're shortish.

Olivia Cornwell Aubrey wrote: "YUS! Someone else who's joining the Supervillain fanclub! They're great for getting a few easy books in, too, as they're shortish."

Yup yup. And there's six of them! :D I am intrigued. They look like fun little reads. Methinks now I'll not wait for a long car ride and read them during the hour it takes to church.

I think a lot of Rick Riordan is in my reading future. My little sister has blown through his Percy Jackson series and Heroes of Olympus series, and now wants to read the Kane Chronicles and wants me to buy them with her. I'll have a lot of Percy and Heroes and Kane to read. :D

message 1311: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, you're all set to give me a run for my money, aren't you, Olivia? ;)

Finished my first book! Woohoo! And it counts for this month's DeYoung sprint. If I could finish a piece of fiction today, I'll be on track for my "one fiction and one nonfiction book a week" goal... even though I'd rather read another DeYoung instead of anything fiction... Maybe I'll just sneak in a short story.

message 1312: by Olivia (new)

Olivia Cornwell Yes ma'am. B) (probably not, but who knows!

I started and finished the first Supervillain book! Floyd is adorable. I had been expecting a different approach to the story, but I liked this one. Now I must read the others!

message 1313: by Katie (new)

Katie Daniels | 242 comments Glad you liked it! Out of blatant curiosity what were you expecting?

message 1314: by Olivia (new)

Olivia Cornwell Katie wrote: "Glad you liked it! Out of blatant curiosity what were you expecting?"

I thought Floyd was going to be kidnapped and 'signed up' for fighting supervilains. I'm not sure where I got that idea. I feel like it was a summary or something similar, but I don't remember. I expected it to be limited to just on Earth, not a galaxy-wide epidemic. Knowing Floyd comes from someplace else makes him cooler, though. ^_^ Although he doesn't seem as snarky and aloof in the book as he does on his Twitter. ;)

message 1315: by [deleted user] (new)

In the books he doesn't have obnoxious fans (like me) or his author to aggravate him. That and of course books, even based on a true story, are always fictionalized a little.

message 1316: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 215 comments Katie wrote: "Translated from Italian, huh? That's cool? Do you mind sharing the title/author/translator info? There was talk at some point about getting Supervillains translated INTO Italian..."

It is Roberto Costantini's "The Deliverance of Evil", translated by N. S. Thompson. It will be published in February this year. It's a thriller; so far there is strong language and plenty of talk about the main character sleeping with lots of women. I hope there aren't any bed scenes! If so it will go back to the free table in the break room! :) So far, though, the writing is good.

message 1317: by M F (new)

M F (fianaigecht) | 247 comments I'm currently rereading "Fever Crumb" by Philip Reeve as it's been two or three years since I last read it and I feel rather unwell at the moment (I went to Paris. It disagreed with me) so easy reading it is. Also because I have five books reserved at the library, but none of them have arrived yet.

Trying to maintain an average speed of one book every couple of days because I know if I go into a low period I won't read anything for several weeks. I'm kind of ... getting ahead with my to-read list. (I have ups and downs and they affect my ability to function a great deal.)

message 1318: by Faith (new)

Faith (faithblum) | 173 comments I just finished the second and last Mary Connealy book I will read unless someone tells me that they found one that actually has realistic characters in it, especially the male leads.

message 1321: by [deleted user] (new)

lol That bad, Faith?

Getting ahead sounds like an excellent plan, Miriam. B-)

I had time over breakfast to start a new DeYoung book--Crazy Busy. Only did one chapter, but hey, it's a start towards good reading habits.

message 1324: by [deleted user] (new)

I saw the Goodreads ad for that one, Faith. I might try it. I dig scars in fiction. :P

*calms Theodora and sits her down with a book* Running won't help. At least, running and reading at the same time doesn't sound very safe.

message 1325: by [deleted user] (new)

Didn't you read "Ten Ways" last year, Corey? Or maybe it was another book with a similar title. I seem to recall a blog review along those lines.

Read a handful of comics that were sitting on my shelf unread. I doubt any of them count for anything because they're single issues (although the one is a one-shot so that might be on Goodreads), but hey, at least they're not sitting on my shelf unread anymore.

message 1326: by Faith (new)

Faith (faithblum) | 173 comments I finished reading a book that I am not actually going to finish. It is one of just a few on my "abandoned" shelf now. Poorly written and a plot that sounds interesting in theory, but has poor execution. Bummer.

message 1327: by Olivia (new)

Olivia Cornwell Finally getting to Gathering Blue. I loved The Giver, so here's hoping this will be just as good. Two books closer to the ones I may or may not have bought because I judged and bought because of the covers...

Theodora might like the original Elsie Dinsmore, maybe? There's a good 28 in the series. ;)

M F (fianaigecht) | 247 comments I hope it's okay that I added The Great Gatsby to my list for this year's challenge - it was on last year's, but I just reread it today, and it's been the best part of a year so I thought it ought to be counted. :)

message 1330: by Leah (new)

Leah Good | 236 comments Working on Fly Away Home and The Global Orphan Crisis simultaneously. Currently focused on The Global Orphan Crisis though.

message 1331: by [deleted user] (new)

You're not having a very good time this year in regards to abandoned books, are you, Faith? That's two already!

Ahh, so I'm not hallucinating, Corey! That's good at least. Are you going to reread any DeYoung for this month's challenge, hmm?

Of course, rereads are welcome, Miriam. The only rule is that you can only count a book once per year (mainly because you can only add a book to a shelf once *shrugs*).

It's actually not that bad, Rebekah. It feels awkward at first, but once you get past the initial weirdness it works. Coming from someone who used to hate present tense, so...

Some of the content made me a little uncomfortable, but I definitely lean towards the picky side on romantic stuff. :P"

Hmm... Maybe I'll try it. I'm picky too though. You'd just have to ask my sister. :p I wonder if I would get used to it if I stuck to it longer than a page and a half...

message 1334: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah Jones | 120 comments Still reading Great Expectations. So far, mysterious plot, good very Dickens like characters, great descriptions... I'm loving it, but it is pretty long...

I have a feeling I'd have a better chance at this challenge if we were counting words or pages, instead of books! ;)

message 1342: by Jenni (new)

Jenni Noordhoek (melodykondrael) | 145 comments I didn't feel good the other day so I sat and read 12 manga. Four of them were from "Afterschool Charisma", a seinen series about clones of famous people; eight were from Vampire Knight which was decent until it suddenly and unexpectedly got squicky at which point I was quite done. 0.o

Next up - reading the manga version of Durarara!! I'd love to hunt down the light novel but there aren't any official English translations. =P

I'm going to Colorado skiing so I don't think I'll have a chance to read while taking the slopes :)

M F (fianaigecht) | 247 comments Reading Scrivener's Moon by Philip Reeve as a stop-gap while I wait for a couple of reservations to arrive at the library, though I may also pay a visit to my school library to stock up while I wait too. I didn't expect to read so much so quickly this year.

message 1345: by [deleted user] (new)

Clearly you're a force to be reckoned with this year, Miriam!

I need to watch Perry Mason for research. Didn't realize there were books, too!

M F (fianaigecht) | 247 comments Picked up Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey and The Left Hand Of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin from the library today. Haven't finished Scrivener's Moon yet, though, so I'll not start those until tomorrow at the earliest...

message 1348: by Kendra (new)

Kendra Ardnek | 38 comments Dragonflight is pretty good, I read it for my great sci-fi study last October. Neat concept, though as is characteristic of McCaffrey's writing style, it sometimes felt a bit jumpy. I quite enjoyed it nonetheless.

Olivia Cornwell Finished Gathering Blue last night and read a bit of The Crown of Embers. Only chapter chapter in and there's been one death and we've jumped right into danger. o.O

Tracy (goodreadscomtracy_fitzwater) I'm back to Anne Perry - Thomas and Charlotte Pitt this time. I also have another review book to read by the end of the month - Silver People, by Margarita Engle.
