That's why I don't tend to read series books back to back. I don't want to get burned out. It's getting hard to keep up with all the various series books. The tbr pile keeps creeping up, but I supposed that's better than running out of books.
I hate starting a great series and then having to wait forever for the next book in that series to come out.
For me, it depends on the quality of the series. But I agree with Danielle back-to-back can lead to burnout. Also if the author seems to be phoning it in or the characters seem stagnant or the author isn't doing much to make them change over time.I remember when I first read Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series there were already...6 books? I think in the series. I read them all. Then afterwards I was so bummed because I loved that world so much and I was all out of books. I had gotten so immersed in her world that I couldn't begin anything else. Nothing felt quite right. It took a couple of days to find another book that captured my attention.
OTOH, I was doing back-to-back reads of Mary Janice Davidson's Queen Betsy series ( funny paranormal) and they went downhill quickly so that after just the 3rd one I felt like I'd wasted my time.
On the whole, I think mystery series tend to hold up better than romance ones so I can power through them and not feel like I am burned out.
I tend to stick mainly to series because I love to see the characters I love, evolve, but some authors seem to run out of steam after the second or third book and then all the books seem the same or the conflict becomes too outrageous for lack of ideas.
Right now I'm reading the 4th book in the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. I'm trying to keep my reading on the light-hearted funny side, but just don't want to get too much of a good thing.
No, reading a series back to back does not burn me out. My undiagnosed obsessive compulsive behavior shows up in my reading habits. It happens every time I discover a book I love. I get seized with the desire to read everything published by the author I can find. It doesn't matter if it's a series or not.

But I think I need new characters in each. By book 8 or 9 of the Stephanie Plum series, I was like... "would you just pick a guy?!"
Like you, Tina, I hate the feeling when I run out of a favorite series. That's another reason I don't read back to back, if I can avoid it. I at least try to put a few books between books in a series.
