Eragon
question
I was unable to finish this book.

I've tried again and again to read it, but to no avail. People have told me it starts out slowly and picks up the pace later, but I'm starting to wonder if this is just not my type of book. Any advice?

I thought it was the worst book I have ever read. I was rolling my eyes with the purple prose so much that I got sore eyes. Hideously written this book is.
It is quite slow. Describes everything in sight. but when it comes to the action part, it's cool. :) but I havent even finished the series. hahahaha Maybe next time. I think it's the kind of book that I will read it when I'm done with the other books I want to read first.
I struggled through this one hoping it would get better. It just wasn't what I was hoping. Usually when I read a book in a series I can't wait to get my hand on the next one, but this was not the case. I finished and did not get that feeling of remorse I usually get when I read a good book too quickly.
I, personally, love this series, but I know some people, who typically read pretty fast, that it took a really long time to get into. I think it's worth it to finish it, but it could just not be your style.
When I tried to read this doorstopper I pretty much failed at some point because it's so utterly boring.
Now I'm listening to an audiobook. That helps because the guy who reads it gave the characters hilarious voices. Saphira sounds like a burly man. That's funny enough to continue listening, even though I catch myself asking "what the hell is he doing?" whenever Eragon decides to do something stupid. Which is 90 % of the things Eragon ever does in the book.

I read Eragon when I was in primary school and really liked it. It took me years to get through Eldest, I think I half-read it twice before i finished. The last two felt so dragged on. I think the whole series was just dragged on and became a chore to read.
Man, I raced through these books. I guess lots of descriptions and repetition appeal to me - i can't get enough of Game of Thrones either :)
It was really slow for me for the first 250 pages. It got a lot better towards the end though. I'm still debating if I should read the rest of the series.
I had the same. The book is just too slow-paced. Reading has to be fun, I would not try to read anything you do not really like.
I had the same problem, but finished it anyways, although it took me a really long time. The same thing happened to me with the second book, which took me like 3 weeks to finsh, and now I'm just waiting for my friend to finish the next one so that I can read it. I think it's just the writing style that makes it so slow paced. The plot is interesting, and if Paolini put more work into character development and less in describing their journeys or the scenery, I think it would be a pretty good book. I think that if like Cassandra Clare or Veronica Roth were to write these books, they would be much more fun to read.
I love details so I didn't find it boring but many of my friends found the beginning to be slow. They all thought the plot was good and they wanted to finish it. What they did was skim/speed read til it got more exciting.
I loved the book but I found it slow paced as well. You should try skimming it a little until you get to the exciting parts.
I say give it a rest. Sounds like you gave it a far shake. It's a mediocre series ad your time could be spent reading better works like mistborn or LotR
I couldn't read this book either but I so wanted to. I couldn't stand the fact that he was in the forest finding the egg one minute and then all of the sudden he was back in the town. I thought 'this is too confusing' and put the book down. is the whole book like this? because if it is only the first part I might try it again.
I haven't read it in a while, but I thought it was a fair read, if you can get over Eragon's crippling stupidity and the obvious borrowing of many elements from other fantasy series.

Its stail the begining no dought. Honestly I had the same problem I had to reread the begining 3 different times before i could get through the begining.
My suggestion read the first 150 pages or more in one sitting then you should be good to go because it gets more interesting from there
It gets much better than that from there but it is worth reading in my opinion, yeah it gets boring here and there but it's there but it is to build more ideas for later events

I loved the whole series and didn't find it difficult to read at all.
I have tried to finish this book at least 3 times and I can't. I own the series but refuse to start the rest without finishing. BUT I do know the ending because I have seen the movie over a hundred times. I love it. But the beginning is VERY slow but it does have some of the best descriptions I have ever read. I am planning on finishing it during the summer when I have time to be focused on it. I can't wait because I know it will be even better than the movie.
I agree. There wasn't enough action and a lot of the book was spent inside Eragon's thoughts. People told me that it was such a good book but it took me forever to read it. I skipped a lot of the boring parts to get to something that was good to read, but it didn't last long.
I love fantasy and I adore dragons, but the book was painfully boring. I pushed myself hard to finish the book hoping that in the end I'd be all fired up for the next one. Never happened.
Even though other people told that it gets better, the first book just ruined it for me.

Props to Paolini for writing four books by the age of nineteen... but I believe it's quality, not quantity.
I think it was a good idea, but he is a poor writer. It took me ages to finish this cycle, and only the last book did I find myself reading for hours to finish it. The last book has a good twist...but again, it was poorly written.

I've read this whole series. The books just keep getting slower to me. I wouldn't recommend these books to anyone. I usually like the books in this genre but these were not well written. It makes we sad because I feel like these books could have been so much better if he condensed some things together.
I admire what he was able to achieve at such a young age, but the writing style prevented me from finishing after three tries.
this entire series is great but i agree that he is very descriptive... a little too descriptive
I would abandon this. Paolini's parents are publishers and his writing is poor. There are lots of far better fantasy works to try. If it's Dragons and great characters you want. Try Dragon Prince by Melanie Rawn. Very underrated set of books.
yeah i'm glad i am not the only one.. i was wondering if i was just busy or was it because it was really slow.. but thankfully after a month i finished it because i really dont want not finishng a book. but i dont think im gonna continue the rest of the series =(
I also battled with this book. I complained endlessly to a friend about it, who laps up books in this genre. At the time it felt as is he was taking far too much license from Tolkein... trying to out do him, and failing miserably as a result. Put it down several times, forcing myself to only pick it up later. I don't know what possessed me, but I bought the sequel and the first third was quite similar. I put it down to the fact that the author was a kid when he wrote this, child protege or not. After the first third of the sequel, everything changed. The plot grew a million times more interesting and far better writing. Now the last 2 books in the series some of my all time favourite books.
So definitely worth the effort if you enjoy fantasy!

I would try to make it through the first 150 pages and then decide if you want to continue. I agree, it does start out slowly and there are a lot of names and places that are important later in the series. However, there are people that this book just doesn't agree with. But at least you're trying it! That's more than some people can say.
The writing can be somewhat thick and difficult to read. Paolini spends a lot of time on descriptions that make the settings more vivid in the imagination, but can make reading it a bore if you're not into that sort of reading. I feel that the writing style is almost like Tolkien; not a whole lot of rapid-fire action scenes. The plot moves, but slowly at times.

Life is too short for bad books. I gave up around the second book.... poor writing, poorly developed characters, just poor.
I don't recomend THIS book. If it's dwarves, elves and men you want try reading The Lord of The Rings by JRR Tolkien
