message 101: by J. (new)

J. Pennington (jgracetheauthor) | 74 comments I know. Just not as many as a novel, plus they're broken up more, meaning more books. I'm glad she changed it. :)

message 102: by Jenni (new)

Jenni Noordhoek (melodykondrael) | 145 comments I think it gives the general us an unfair advantage over the Leah. So I don't like it.

message 103: by J. (new)

J. Pennington (jgracetheauthor) | 74 comments I think it should be disqualified in general, along with picture books. And I'm not hating on manga readers... I'd disqualify my Tintin reading, too. ;)

message 104: by Jenni (new)

Jenni Noordhoek (melodykondrael) | 145 comments But that excludes those of us just prefer reading comics. That's just who some of us are. =P

message 105: by J. (new)

J. Pennington (jgracetheauthor) | 74 comments It only excludes you from this particular challenge, though. :) By all means, you should have another challenge for reading manga. Nobody's saying it's bad, just that it may not be compatible with this particular challenge.

message 106: by Jenni (new)

Jenni Noordhoek (melodykondrael) | 145 comments Leah gets to make the rules. It's up to her whether manga/comics are allowed, and she really didn't need to disallow them for herself as initially she did say they were okay for everyone. It's only a fair game if she makes the rules.

message 107: by J. (new)

J. Pennington (jgracetheauthor) | 74 comments I'm not trying to make the rules. :) I'm just saying I am glad she made that decision. I didn't complain about it before, it's her game, so of course she gets to make the rules. Just giving feedback! :)

message 108: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm not making any restrictions on what other participants can count. If you can (legally) add it to Goodreads, by all means! I want to keep this simple. More rules is just too much work. ;)

The only reason I'm making a personal decision not to add manga to my own shelf is that I want to keep the challenge more accessible, and removing manga was an easy, realistic way to do that. To be completely honest, this challenge has worked better than I planned. I've already read more than I planned to all year, no joke! I want to give y'all a challenge, but I want to keep it fun. Y'all can still check my progress manga-included, if you want to race. ;)

message 109: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 215 comments Hi! I just joined Goodreads this week. Am I too late to join this party?? I read three books in the first two weeks of January (one of which is not in the database and which I have not yet taken time to add--"The Malefactor" by E. Phillips Oppenheim.) I wrote 25 pages on a story of mine, then switched back to reading with 3 books the last week of January and the first week of February. Then I finished writing chapter 33 and have almost finished chapter 34 of my epic book that's already about 100k words. So I read in definite spurts!
I'll go over and make a shelf...
~Hannah

message 110: by [deleted user] (new)

It's never too late to join the fun! Anyone can sign up any time, as long as they've kept track of what books they've read already this year. So glad to have you! I've got you and your shelf down on the list. :D

message 111: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 215 comments Thanks! I love to read, but am very busy and am trying to finish a manuscript, so this will be great for me. :)

message 112: by [deleted user] (new)

I hear ya! I, too, am a writer, and last year I did horribly balancing writing with reading. (Meaning I mostly wrote and read very little.) This challenge was my drastic and humorous attempt to change that. ;) So far, it's worked brilliantly!

message 114: by [deleted user] (new)

Hooray! Welcome!

message 115: by [deleted user] (new)

Excellent. We need wormies like you in this group. ;) A hearty welcome to you!

message 116: by M F (new)

M F (fianaigecht) | 247 comments I'm in :) Just to clarify, everything I've read in 2013 so far counts, right?

message 117: by [deleted user] (new)

Yay yay yay! *grins in delight*

You are correct; everything you've read in 2013 so far counts, no matter when you signed up for the challenge.

message 118: by Faith (new)

Faith (faithblum) | 173 comments Audiobooks are counted.

message 119: by [deleted user] (new)

Faith is correct; audiobooks are fine, since you "absorbed" an entire book in the process of listening. :)

message 120: by Jedi Knight Siri (new)

Jedi Knight Siri (tahiriveila) | 14 comments I'll try! Full time student + part time job + all other family, church, and other related activities might make it a little difficult, but I'll give it a go.

message 121: by [deleted user] (new)

That's the idea! I struggle with finding time to read, which is why I started this challenge. The point of this game is to challenge everyone to read as much as they can within their schedules, so, welcome!

message 122: by Kaleb (new)

Kaleb (httpwwwgoodreadscomvaron) | 97 comments Jedi Night Siri? As in Siri Tachi?

message 123: by Jedi Knight Siri (new)

Jedi Knight Siri (tahiriveila) | 14 comments Kaleb wrote: "Jedi Night Siri? As in Siri Tachi?"

Yep! She's one of my favorite Jedi from the JA and JQ books. I love the SW EU (Expanded Universe). Which characters are your favorites?

message 124: by Kaleb (new)

Kaleb (httpwwwgoodreadscomvaron) | 97 comments Yep. Obi-Wan, probably, from the main series, but I liked Banth (Was that her name?) as well. My favorite, though, would have to go to Quinlan Vos.

message 125: by Jedi Knight Siri (new)

Jedi Knight Siri (tahiriveila) | 14 comments Bant Eerin? The Mon Calamarian who was Tahl's apprentice? I liked her, too. Quinlan is one interesting Jedi, for sure. I don't follow the comics as much as the books (mostly post-ROTJ), just because my library doesn't get many SW comics (they tend to get the manga stuff).

message 126: by [deleted user] (new)

There's SW manga?

message 127: by Jedi Knight Siri (new)

Jedi Knight Siri (tahiriveila) | 14 comments There's some... http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Star_W...
But I was referring to the fact that my library doesn't get a lot of SW comic, but other manga (not SW) series.

message 128: by [deleted user] (new)

Ooh... Thanks! And gotcha.

message 129: by Kaleb (new)

Kaleb (httpwwwgoodreadscomvaron) | 97 comments Yeah. That's her. It's been a long time since I've read those books.

He's my favorite, probably because of his unique experiences and attitude.

I read the Junior Jedi Knights and Young Jedi Knights, and that's about it for post-RotJ. There's just so many, I don't know where to start.

message 130: by Joel (new)

Joel Parisi (joelaparisi) | 21 comments Okay, I'm in.

message 131: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome aboard, mate!

message 132: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine Ruigrok (bushmaid) | 6 comments Okay, I done didded it. I eventually found the rules. You'll have to forgive Aussie, she's a bit slow. ;) I'm in! :D

message 133: by [deleted user] (new)

Yay, 'bout time! It just wasn't a party with out you, Aussie dear. ;)

message 134: by (Jen) (new)

(Jen) The Artist Librarian (theartistlibrarian) | 72 comments My sister told me about this group --I'd love to join in!

Shelf link: http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/...

I keep track of books I've read on paper, so I haven't transferred this year's books yet. Hopefully, this will help me to use goodreads more. Thanks for organizing this!

message 135: by [deleted user] (new)

Fantastic! Thank your sister on my behalf for dragging you in. ;) I hope you enjoy using Goodreads more! Whenever you finish transferring this year's books, you'll get points for all of them.

message 136: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! ^_^

(Perseverance pays off...)

message 137: by Jedi Knight Siri (new)

Jedi Knight Siri (tahiriveila) | 14 comments So if any book counts (i.e. - audiobook, fiction, non-fiction, etc.), is it okay to do children's books and textbooks? (I'm taking some education courses and we write lesson plans using children's books as read alouds).

message 138: by [deleted user] (new)

If you read the entire textbook, yes, it counts. And yes, I'm allowing people to count children's books as well, as it's too much work for me to nitpick over reading level. ;)

message 139: by Elsa (new)

Elsa | 3 comments You might like to know that I joined Goodreads just to enter. ^_^ So...I'm in.

I'm reading the whole Bible through...does it count as one book or 66? ;)

- Evah

message 140: by [deleted user] (new)

*Wall-E voice* Evah, Evah, Eeeevahhh! How thrilled you have just made me. ^_^ Welcome aboard!

Sorry, the Bible only has one ISBN, so it only counts as one book. ;)

message 141: by Elsa (new)

Elsa | 3 comments *robotic chuckle* Thanks!

Rats. Well, that's understandable. :)

message 142: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't think Evah chuckles. She just giggles.

message 143: by Elsa (new)

Elsa | 3 comments Fine. ;) *robotic giggle*

message 144: by [deleted user] (new)

That's my Evah. ^_^

message 145: by Joel (new)

Joel Parisi (joelaparisi) | 21 comments Uhm... how do we count re-reads? Or do we at all?

message 146: by [deleted user] (new)

You can, AFAIK, only add a book to a shelf once, so while you can reread books you've read in the past, you can't reread a book multiple times this year and count it, unless you can figure out how to add it to your shelf multiple times. That's just for simplicity since I'm looking at the total number of books on your shelf--I personally don't care if you're rereading. :)

message 147: by Joel (new)

Joel Parisi (joelaparisi) | 21 comments Alright then. (Darnit, I won't get credit for my rereads of SOTD. Oh well. XD)

message 148: by [deleted user] (new)

(Shame, 'cause those are definitely worth rereading. XD)

message 149: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lovelace (kingjon) | 89 comments While I'm not doing so (except maybe for one that I "counted" when I read the version I downloaded from a fan-fiction site last year, and now have in hard copy), it is possible to give separate "reviews" (and thus "shelve" separately?) to different editions of a book.

message 150: by [deleted user] (new)

UPDATE: I clarified the rules for reporting and extended the deadline for getting your final count in. Check this thread to make sure you're eligible for the grand prize! https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
