Jamie | 36 comments Nobody has posted on here in 4 days and I hope it's because you're all lost in a great book.
I'm reading Manchild in the Promised Land and it's wonderful but harsh- an autobiography about a boy who lived in Harlem and got into serious trouble.
I'm also reading Rainbow High which is young adult gay fiction and it's really interesting and the second in a series of 3.

Renae (renaeclark) | 58 comments Hi Jamie! It is certainly quiet around here. I'm reading Atonement right now. Manchild in the Promised Land sounds good. Renae

message 3: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 20 comments I had picked up To Kill a Mockingbird but found that I just wasn't in the mood, so I read Mistress of the Art of Death. There was a part of the book that put me in a really bad mood, but still, such a good read. A nice surprise since it isn't something that I would normally pick up, but it was on sale for $1 in a Walden's that was going out of business!
I just started reading The Historian. I'm on page 39 and I am hooked! I think I'm going to love it!

message 4: by Renae (new)

Renae (renaeclark) | 58 comments Rachel, I read the Mistress of the Art of Death a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. There's a sequel "The Serpent's Tale" too. Renae

message 5: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kelly_l) I'm on the last 100 pages of The Thirteenth Tale. Then I'm gonna pick up this erotica vampire book thing (like Sookie, but more serious and more adult). Dunno what's after that???

message 6: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 20 comments Renae, have you read The Serpent's Tale? If so, did you enjoy it?

(like Sookie, but more serious and more adult)
More adult? Wow! Let us know the name of the series and if the books are good.

message 7: by Renae (new)

Renae (renaeclark) | 58 comments I haven't read The Serpent's Tale yet. I was "mad" (yeah, I can be childish!) about the ending of the first book, I decided to wait a bit to read the sequel. It has received good reviews. Maybe the second book will give me the happy ending I was looking for! Renae

message 8: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 20 comments I was surprised by the way the author tied up Adelia's ending, but I suppose I expected it to end...well, you know (don't want to spoil the ending)! However, knowng Adelia's character, I don't think I would have been completely satisfied with that ending either. The book seemed to have an ending, not a lead in to a sequel...wonder where it goes from there. I may have to get to it eventually because I really enjoyed the first book.

message 9: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kelly_l) The vampire series is the Anita Blake vampire books by hmmm...by um...I can't remember. But they are supposedly very naughty erotic sort of ones. She's the "naughty" version of Sookie...they say. I bought 4 of the books.

My son's girlfriend is completely addicted to these. She loves the books.

message 10: by Renae (new)

Renae (renaeclark) | 58 comments Kelly, from your description, I wouldn't be taking Ms. Blake's book to work to read on my lunch hour! I have been tempted by this series as it is often compared to the Sookie series. I am really looking forward to Sookie #9. It's only a few months away now!

This week I'm reading Beneath a Marble Sky and it is an enjoyable read.

message 11: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kelly_l) I know. I can read Sookie #8 now cuz I've been holding that and not willing to pick it up until I know I can have another Sookie waiting to go. Maybe I'll read Sookie #8 before I get into Anita Blake? We'll see. I'm STILL on the last 100 pages of The Thirteenth Tale. You read that didn't you Renae? did you love it??? I'm so in love with this book.

Beneath a Marble Sky? I'm gonna go get more info.

message 12: by Renae (new)

Renae (renaeclark) | 58 comments I did really enjoy The Thirteenth Tale. It was a true mystery. You didn't know what would happen next. Beautiful writing too.

I'm debating about my next read. I only have about 55 books on my "to read" list!!

message 13: by Susan (new)

Susan (ladymisssusan) | 19 comments Kelly wrote: Then I'm gonna pick up this erotica vampire book thing (like Sookie, but more serious and more adult). "

Oh I'm going to have to check these out! I've been Reading Catcher in the Rye because in my head that was the book for this month, not To Kill A Mockingbird. Guess I'll have to pick that up later. Came to check on March's book and no pole :(
Not that I need suggestions, I have a huge pile! It is certainly quit in this group!

message 14: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 36 comments I'm reading Watchmen, just started and had to stop...more papers!!!!!!!...but it's good so far. Go pick it up if you have a chance, it's short but interesting.

message 15: by Renae (new)

Renae (renaeclark) | 58 comments I just started Bel Canto today. It's my first read by this author. So far so good!

I grabbed this a few weeks ago. I've picked it up and put it down at the bookstore SO MANY TIMES, but since my husband said he wanted to read it too, I finally bought it. I'll read it once he finishes.

message 17: by gabrielle (new)

gabrielle (gabbe) | 8 comments I just started Water for Elephants but we have a very busy week ahead of us, so I won't get to pick it back up for a bit!

message 18: by Susan (new)

Susan (ladymisssusan) | 19 comments I finally finished Catcher in the Rye. It wasn't really my reading style but at least now I can say I've read it. I hope to find the 5th House of Night book at Wal-Mart today and start it tonight. I do love me some vampire books. lol I think that made me 7/40 for the year.

message 19: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 20 comments Susan, if you love vampire books, you should pick up The Historian. I picked this one up on clerance not realizing its about a vampire, and oh my goodness is it good! I'm LOVING it! Hmmm...who knew Twilight would make me a lover of vampires novels?!

message 20: by Susan (new)

Susan (ladymisssusan) | 19 comments I've heard that is good Rachel! I will have to look for it. Where did you find it on clearance?

message 21: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 20 comments There was a Walden's book store that went out of business in a local mall. I scored on a bunch of books, including several that I would not have normally bought. I'm so glad I bought this one.

message 22: by Susan (new)

Susan (ladymisssusan) | 19 comments Oh that's right! What a good score!

message 23: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kelly_l) Yanno, I've had The Historian sitting on my shelf for YEARS and I haven't read it. I've heard this book called EVERMORE is an excellent Twilight type book and I have it sitting here to start next. I just finished the Thirteeth Tale and LOVED it! I'm glad we read it. I think I'm gonna do EVERMORE, then an Anita Blake and then I'm going to get back into a more serious book. Maybe the Wally Lamb book.

message 24: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 20 comments I've been working all month and I haven't had much time to read. I'd really like to read the Thirteenth Tale. Hopefully I'll have more time to read in April.

message 25: by *Lee* (last edited Mar 21, 2009 03:55PM) (new)

*Lee* Like Gabrielle, I'm onto Water for Elephants too now (Debra has kindly loaned it to me!). ONly just to chapter 3 but am enjoying the writing so far.
I have about another 20 books on my to read list, I have to get cracking! I've sat them all on my beside table as a reminder not to buy any more new ones till they are all read...LOL!

message 26: by Susan (new)

Susan (ladymisssusan) | 19 comments *Lee* wrote:

I keep buying books though! lol I'm thinking I need to reread the Twilight series too. I'm missing me some Edward. So, when you reread a book do you count it in your total books read for the year, or only new books?

message 27: by *Lee* (last edited Mar 21, 2009 05:41PM) (new)

*Lee* oooh good question Susan, I don't know actually! My book tally goal for this year purely is books I have not read the WHOLE lot of before (some on my list I have started but lost interest & didn't finish, but I want to push through this time).
I am going to read the final 3 books in the twilight again at some point, (NOT Twilight itself because compared to the other three I really didn't like it that much at all, and really don't want to read it again...*HA*). I decided the other day I'll only read them again after I finish what I have on hand - that'll be a nice treat. I also want to reread all my harry potters one after the other too.

message 28: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 36 comments Someone help me finish a book!
I have started a million and I haven't finished any, ugh
I started Watchmen but then saw the movie, then I started the new Jodi Picoult book because they were selling it for mad cheap at Costco...but then I went to Borders for the Twilight DVD release and since starting my Lyrica I have had fewer headaches and think I can possibly read those trade paper back size books without getting a headache, hence I picked up the 5th Sookie book...and if I do get a headache, they had the hardcovers!
Someone motivate me...all of your suggestions might make my problem worse...not that it's a bad thing :)

message 29: by Allison (new)

Allison i'm glad to hear the good review for mistress of the art of death. i picked it up for a few bucks on the borders bargain rack, and just haven't gotten into it.

i really enjoyed the historian, the thirteenth tale and water for elephants. although they are all different, they have great writing styles, and they just drew me in.

i'm currently reading mockingbird, a biography of harper lee. i just finished i am scout, the ya bio of her, so i'm looking forward to reading more in depth.

keep the suggestions coming- i'm started to collect books to read on the honeymoon. we've got a long flight, layovers, and a week on the beach!

message 30: by Renae (last edited Mar 22, 2009 08:35AM) (new)

Renae (renaeclark) | 58 comments I finished Bel Canto on Friday night. I'm not sure if I would recommend it. The second half of the book was really really good . . . couldn't put it down. The first half was just was boring.

I'm starting The Other Boylen Girl tonight.

Allison, congrats on your upcoming marriage!

message 31: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kelly_l) Jamie? I've been on Lyrica for years and I haven't noticed it affecting anything reading wise...accept maybe being too tired to stay awake for as long as I used to? Maybe?

Jamie? Read the Sookie books. They just are so much fun.

message 32: by Susan (new)

Susan (ladymisssusan) | 19 comments Finished the 5th book in the House of Night series last night called Hunted. It always leaves me wanting more of the story so that is good. Now do I pick up Twilight tonight or Sookie? Hmmm...

message 33: by Jamie (new)

I just started the Lyrica a few weeks ago, but for the past few years it was hard for me to read smaller print books because I'd get a migraine or a bad headache, but since taking the medicine I haven't had any migraines (I would get them all of the time, reading or not). I'm hoping that I can read finer print books without getting the headaches now, not sure if I'm making sense.

message 34: by Angela (new)

Angela (angelaspangela) I'm *addicted* to The Daughters of the Moon series. There's 13 books in all and since March 21st I've read 9 of them. I can't get enough. I seriously recommend them to anyone who likes a quick read but a good story line!

message 35: by Renae (new)

Renae (renaeclark) | 58 comments I'll have to check that series out Angela.

I just read The Other Boleyn Girl and LOVED IT!

message 36: by Angela (new)

Angela (angelaspangela) Such an awesome book! One of my friends has all of her books in her room for me when I'm done with this series. Haha.

message 37: by Allison (new)

Allison i finally read sookie #1 and really enjoyed it.
i'm going to venture out in the rain today to see if i can pick up the others.

message 38: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 36 comments Oh Allison, we seem to have very similar taste and I think you will really get sucked into the series. It's super cheesy (it gets cheesier) but they suck you in.

message 39: by Renae (new)

Renae (renaeclark) | 58 comments Yes, the Sookie series gets better with each book. I'm looking forward to #9 in a few weeks!

I just finished No One You Knowtoday. Very good mystery. Loved the voices in this story.

message 40: by Allison (new)

Allison It's super cheesy (it gets cheesier) but they suck you in.

oh no...lol.
i'm usually not one for cheesy/chick lit type books, but there's something about this one...i don't know what it is. maybe the vampires? but i did not enjoy twilight, so who knows...i'm just looking forward to reading the rest of them!

message 41: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 36 comments Oh girl, I hate chick lit...(read too much of it about 5 years ago) and this series is just so not Twilight-y. This series is just different in it's own way because there's a mystery behind each one as well as supernatural event/people/etc.

message 42: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kelly_l) I just started Nineteen Minutes by Jody Piccoult. Have you girls read her books? My Sisters Keeper was an amazing book. I haven't read any of her others so I'm looking forward to this.

message 43: by Renae (new)

Renae (renaeclark) | 58 comments I have not read any Jody Piccoult. I have a collection of her books just waiting to be read.

I just finished Sunshineby Robin McKinnley. I haven't read any paranormal since Sookie and Twilight. It was a good story. I liked the characters. However, the author is just too wordy. It's too bad, it could have been an amazing story if only tightened up a bit.

message 44: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 36 comments I have a Jodi Picoult book sitting on my table but other people kept loaning me books so those have to come first. I can't remember which Jodi book this is, it's the new one though. I read one a few years ago that I really liked it was about two 17 year olds who decided to kill each other (murder suicide type deal). It was just so intense.

message 45: by Allison (new)

Allison Jamie wrote: "Oh girl, I hate chick lit...(read too much of it about 5 years ago) and this series is just so not Twilight-y. This series is just different in it's own way because there's a mystery behind each on..."

exactly- that is why i love it so much!
i keep trying to find them in hardback, but cannot find them anywhere- any tips?
i caved and bought a mass market paperback of #2, but i do not enjoy reading that small size.

message 46: by Allison (new)

Allison Jamie wrote: "I have a Jodi Picoult book sitting on my table but other people kept loaning me books so those have to come first. I can't remember which Jodi book this is, it's the new one though. I read one a fe..."

is that book set up like a mystery?
i've heard people raving about jodi piccoult books, but after reading the back blurb of some of them, they just don't seem my style. i'm not into tear-jerkers. but if this one is more like a mystery, i'll give it a try.

message 47: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 36 comments Allison- you really are me
I hate small size so I searched high and low for hardback and have 1, 2 and 4 but the rest are the small size.

Oh and I hate tear jerkers too, so that could be why this Jodi book is still sitting on my table. I got sucked into the other one because it was just so darn intense (teenagers, murder suicide, one doesn't pull the trigger- now what?). I'll let you know.

message 48: by Renae (new)

Renae (renaeclark) | 58 comments I just finished The Girl She Used to Be. What a great surprise! I loved this book.

I don't like the small paperbacks either!

message 49: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 20 comments Just finished reading The Other Boelyn Girl and WOW! what a great read! I don't know what I should follow that with. Any suggestions?

message 50: by Renae (new)

Renae (renaeclark) | 58 comments Rachel, I really liked The Other Boelyn Girl too. From what I've heard from others, the rest of her books are not as good.

I really liked No One You Know by Michelle Richmond and am looking forward to her other book The Year of Fog. Love her writing style.

I just started [book:The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters, Volume 1|3349087 . . . it's too soon to tell, but it's very victorian and appears to be a mystery.
