Read it in the 5th grade. Pretty good book. The next couple of books in the Brian series aren't as good.

I read it too in fifth grade, and I enjoyed it. I thought it was a terrific book.

what does that have to do with hatchet?

Dominic Valetti I really enjoyed reading this book. It provided enough suspence and pulled me in more and more as I kept reading. I also liked how realistic and detailed it was. I would highly reccommend it.

Jamen Menard I think that this book is quite a book. It not only entertained me for hours but gave me a better understanding of how the Canadian wilderness is. As the book progressed it showed that in humanity only those who wish to try may servive. We soon learn that everyone makes mistakes but its most important that we learn from those mistakes. throught out the book the main caricter realized that life is worth fighting for; but he that much to learn befour he can servive.

Me too! I started skimming about halfway. I like certain parts of it....but in the end it didn't hold my interest very well. And I DIDN'T read this in fifth grade for a school assignment.

message 57: by Buckwade (new)

Buckwade I've only read a couple of pages and read the reviews and this is all I can say: throughout the few pages I've read, the writing was stretching out something simple. Like the book was talking about the main character keeping a secret but kept mentioning it. Based on the criticism I've read, it seems as though Brian is the only actual character in the book and it only follows him surviving. Sounds bad to me

Reving I thought I would totally hate this book. The cover is awful and the whole adventure scene isn't my kinda deal, but I loved it. As soon as I was done with it, I blew through the whole series and loved every one. It is just awesome.

Michell Karnes I love the book. It was interseting to see the problem solving this character uses to survive in the wilderness. I read it every year with my third graders.

Emily Appel Yes! I enjoyed the book immensely when I read it in grade school and often think about it to this day, nearly 20 years later. The book has enough action to keep a person entertained, but is not so far fetched as to be totally unbelievable. My only complaint is that I have always been a bit envious of the main character's adventure (Jason? - It's been a long time.)

yes this was one of the best books i have ever read because I LOVE survival books :D :] :) If I could I would give this book INFINITE stars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Classy281 My son like it,He is in Middle school.

Rebecca Jensen I loved it. It was gritty, descriptive, and realistic. For a moment I wasn't sure the boy would make it! My version (not sure if all published versions came with it) had a glossary in the back that said what Brian found really was; choke cherries made me giggle and I've decided I really want to one day find them since I live in the PNW and see if they really do taste THAT nasty. The movie made from the book, though low budget, was amazing as well and I recommend it as well.

message 64: by AM (new) - rated it 3 stars

AM Maynard no this book is a miserable waste of reading tim ethat has zero point and is probabley the most talked about overated book on the planet it sucked and every time my teacher talked about it last year I wanted to puke

Kimberkat Kreationz Yes! I don't get why people call this book so stupid, granted i read it when i was twelve or so. But that doesn't give any reason as to why this book is stupid. YES we get it you had to read it in school and its boring.
Schools boring.
This book?
Not.

Michell Karnes I think it always comes down to personal taste and of course it is a book written for children not adults. But none of my students ever thought it was boring.

message 67: by Danni (new) - rated it 1 star

Danni It was terrible and boring as hell, I was forced to read it in yr 5 and hated every second of it.

C. J. Scurria Again I read this book very young but I did enjoy it. The way the character was stranded, left completely on his own, and fought to survive just felt very real and intriguing to me. Plus a bonus note I read the sequel "The River" when I was nearly an adult and was surprised at how it had almost the equal amount of interesting survival realism and I recommend it as well!

Blueturtles wrote: "NO! I hated it so much. It was so boring! I had to read it for school. I didn't realy pay any attention to it. I got an A anyway. HAHAHA!!!"

I did the EXACT same thing!!! I hated the book because it was just "find food, get water, throw up it all, repeat" It was for a school reading group. I did all my reports perfectly and got A's all the time but the book its self was dreadful!!! No offence to any one who feels otherwise. It is my opinion, and sorry if it seems harsh.

Michell Karnes I do think opinions vary greatly on any book but my students liked it. I also know the author did research regarding how to live in the wilderness.

Crystal Taylor I loved the book. It was a book that really got me into reading, and through it I developed a love of reading and literature itself. :)

Annemarie Donahue I didn't like it personally. I thought it was okay. And I only read it because I'm running a blog/vlog on young adult literature. But I did have problems with the literature, the first and most important being that language was not challenging enough. This would be an okay pleasure read for a 7th or 8th grader, but nothing that I would allow in a classroom (I teach high school and it's far too easy).

Austin I loved Hatchet! I read it at school with the class a long time ago.... Great book!

Annemarie Donahue @Austin - what grade were you in? I'm just trying to figure out where to put it in school.

message 75: by [deleted user] (new)

I hated this book. I had to read it in fourth grade for school. I thought that the writing was super dull and that nothing happened. To me it was just like "I walked around, I did this, then I did that, the secret, food, survive.." blah blah blah

Austin I was in 5th grade, @Annemarie Donahue

Kylie Like many folks, I imagine, I read this book for school and I adored it (though I did not enjoy having to analyse it, I always thought that was a stupid thing to do to a book, sucked out the enjoyment entirely) -- but I loved Hatchet. At the time I read the story I was struggling with feeling entirely alone and lost in my school environment thus I had taken a great liking to adventure tales and survival stories.
This story suck with me growing up, because my imagination had filled in the blanks, in-between the words and had created this incredible story that actually wasn't there. I don't know if that might have just been me, because I tend to read that way, filling in where authors leave things out -- but for me Hatchet helped shape me as a writer.
I recently bought the book, along with all the others in the series, and reread them and found myself laughing at everything I had re-created in my head!
It was just as adorable as I remembered it and I read it in about an hour on a road trip.
It'll be a book I'll be giving to my children for sure. I think its a wholesome story, with a good attitude toward how to face whatever life throws at you. Considering though, at the time I read this at school I was reading books like Lord of the Rings, Arthur C. Clark. E.E.Doc Smith etc. I still wonder why it captured my imagination so...
I guess maybe it was just me filling in all the blanks :D

Monique I did NOT like it.

Maybe because he (SPOILER!) ate the fish that ate the pilot and when I read that in 6th grade I was so disgusted, it was like I threw up with him.
It was too graphic in some parts also.

Credit though for probably being the most realistic survival book I've read although I definitely did not like it.

message 79: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa This is a great book. I recommend it for elementary school students. It can hold your interest while teaching lessons on self-reliance. I read it with my son when he was in 5th grade and he liked it.

C. J. Scurria Annemarie wrote: "I didn't like it personally. I thought it was okay.....This would be an okay pleasure read for a 7th or 8th grader..."

Yep. That was around the time I read it, in middle school. I think it was the sixth grade and I enjoyed it! Even made an extra credit assignment involving imagining the character explaining what things he went through in pretend documentations.

That sounds like a cool assignment. I won't say I enjoyed it but I can see how this would be a good read for young middle school reader. Thanks for the input.

Catherine My 7th and 8th grade students love this book. It is always checked out of my classroom library, and I usually lose one every year, but I feel like if a student loves it that much, they can keep it.

It was my oldest son's favorite book when he was about eleven.

That has got to be one of the most encouraging statements on this thread ever. If I were a teacher I'd let them keep it too. :)

John Bohnert I've read HATCHET several times and loved it. I even met the author.

The scene in the small airplane when the pilot has a heart attack influenced me later in life. I was a passenger in the copilot seat in a small plane flying over Monument Valley. Thanks to HATCHET, I paid very close attention to what the pilot was doing as he flew the plane. I wanted to be prepared in case he had a heart attack.

I admire how the boy was able to cope in the wilderness.

Annemarie Donahue John wrote: "I've read HATCHET several times and love it. I even met the author."

That's cool. can you share what your impressions were?

Cruse Was a great book. Definitely changed Brian's perspective about what was important in life and what wasn't. I had my classes read this book in 5th grade, and most of the students loved it. It especially touched the boys.

Abby C. I LOVED this book. I thought it was good, EVEN though I had to read it for school. This book was super good and it is definitely recommended to all!!! :)

Claire To be honest I thought this book was a tab bit unreal if you know what I mean! you know you love me xoxo gossip girl

๓คץค- Yes, because it is descriptive and interesting.

Diana Braxton Well, most peopole who are forced to read it don't like it, but it is a short book and very well worth the read.

Diana Grace I didn't like it, it was really dry for me. I read it in seventh grade, and it didn't interest me in the least. Which most books I've read do. But, this may sound bad but, I kind of wanted Brian to die ,,, okay maybe not that harsh but that's how I felt during this book. :|

Vickie I liked this book. I am a 65 year old grandmother, and I was intrigued by the main character's resourcefulness and bravery. Well worth reading!

message 94: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa I read it with my son when he was starting middle school. I thought it had some good life lessons. My son liked it as well.

Jessi My son at 8 went Gary Paulsen Crazy, I thought I better read some of these Brian books too, and I really loved them also. The survival aspect and never giving up hope, really struck me as mature concepts that not enough younger kids have a grasp of. Being responsible for yourself and really making your own life prosperous by your own commitment to work, more life lessons needed by our young.

Shirley Griffey yes i liked it i thought it was interesting had some twist to it comment if ou agree

shelsel.lh Bad. 1 stars

BubblesTheMonkey When I read it (or heard it, rather) for the first time, I really enjoyed it (that was in 4th or 5th grade for read-aloud). Reading later as an adult, no. I didn't enjoy it particularly.

message 99: by Joel (new) - rated it 5 stars

Joel Smith I liked it. I think it's one of the better survival books (up there with War of the Worlds) and I don't mind reading it again.

message 100: by Samina (new) - rated it 5 stars

Samina This book and I have a love/hate relationship. At times I just wanted to give up and put the book away but was always wondering if he made it to his father.
