Fantasy Novel from early to mid 1990’s: Revolution that overthrows the aristocratic ruling class [s]

A part of a ruling class family goes into hiding in hidden rooms, maybe an attic. A girl in hiding tells the story. There were mechanical flying bees that were used to spy on the population and to root out hiding aristocrats.
The basic story line reminded me of the Russian Revolution in 1917 that ended Tsarist rule.

Yes, I believe it is "Illusion" by Paula Volsky.
I was studying the Russian Revolution at when I read it, so that's why I didn't think to connect it with the French Revolution. Thanks!
